Trevino looks like he avoided the worst with his finger injury, so the Reds at least won't take the double shot of catching injuries.  Seems very likely they'll pick up another veteran to add depth, probably someone cut by other team
Changing game
8:31
Do you think we are going to see more and more prospects in the majors flat out failing because so many owners are not wanting to spend in free agency?
Mark P
8:34
I don't think we're seeing too many prospects "rushed" to the majors per se, outside of Anaheim, or with the obvious special cases like Skenes.

The money is a factor, but keep in mind that we're also in an era where prospects are getting more MLB-level types of training well before their pro careers actually start.  Obviously there's no substitute for playing and properly facing MLB competition, but prospects are better prepared than ever before, which is part of the reason some teams are comfortable getting guys into the majors on a bit of a fast track

How is DeGrom pitching this spring ? How many innings could he pitch ?
Mark P
8:36
He's only had one ST game, but he looked good in that game and during throwing sessions.  Jury's out on whether or not he can stay healthy, but if he's able to pitch, deGrom should still be a very capable pitcher (even a frontline pitcher)
Giants Talk
8:38
If this season doesn’t go well for the Giants, who have a big hill to climb in their own division, do you think they sell off Ray, Verlander, and Roger’s, etc.? What will it take for them to be back to contention like in those even 2010 years?
Mark P
8:40
Sure, they'd likely trade away the short-term guys if they're not in contention.  A fuller-scale teardown isn't happening given all the money they have committed to Adames, Chapman, Webb, Lee.

The 2010-14 run was a perfect storm of circumstances based around great in-house player development, some canny acquisitions, and (like any great team) some luck in October.  It's incredibly hard to replicate such success again, but Posey is facing high expectations since that success was both so recent, and because he was such a key figure in that era

does Kyle Harrison have any trade value? could you see him being a headliner for Casas/Robert Jr.? thanks
Mark P
8:41
Sticking with the Giants, I don't see them moving Harrison.  Verlander is a FA after this season, Ray after 2026, and Hicks might not be able to stick as a starting pitcher.  Against this backdrop, the Giants aren't likely to move one of their premium young arms

I am more confident in Braves back end rotation now that Holmes and Anderson have pitched okay. We get a vet prior to all star break?
Mark P
8:43
The Braves might not need anyone if at least one of Holmes/Anderson performs well enough to hold down a rotation spot.  Between one of them, Sale, Lopez, Schwellenbach, and Strider coming back relatively soon in April, baby, you've got a stew going!
8:44
(See that organic that catchphrase was?  This might actually work.)

Whats the logic in moving Turang off second? Seems silly to move the platinum glove winner for what would be ostensibly a lateral move in overall defense.
Mark P
8:47
Presumably the Brewers think Turang will be a better shortstop than Ortiz, and that Ortiz at 2B will provide little if any defensive dropoff even from Turang's high standard.

You're right that just moving Ortiz to SS seems like the easier call, yet clearly the Brewers seem to be leaning towards a dual position switch at this point.

Is the player that will sign the first billion dollar contract in baseball yet (Little League not included)? Skenes in 5 years?
Mark P
8:49
It'll be a position player, due to their increased value for being on the field pretty much every day

Is It reasonable to think that Seinfeld is overrated?
Mark P

So your question is, basically, "what's the deal with Seinfeld?"

With OF injuries mounting, should the Tigers splurge and try for a big outfield bat like Luis Robert? What would it cost them if they did?
Mark P
8:51
Detroit has enough good young pitching to get Chicago's attention in trade talks, but....

* the Tigers surely want to see if Robert is himself healthy and performing well after his down year in 2024
* the White Sox probably don't love the idea of moving Robert to a division rival
* the Tigers' outfield injuries aren't so dire that the team needs to make some big splash like trading for Robert

Little surprised Buck Farmer was sent to the minor league camp as was Jake Diekman. Could it be a precursor to a trade or FA signing?
Mark P
8:53
Atlanta signed about a dozen pitchers with MLB experience to minor league contracts, so some whittling of fairly prominent names was inevitable.  Very likely that a few of those guys trigger opt-outs and go looking for jobs elsewhere before the spring is out

Who's a player that you wish could time travel and play in this era of baseball?
Mark P
8:56
Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell....any of the Negro League legends who were unfairly kept out of MLB

Are we ready to throw in the towel on Ke'Bryan Hayes and consider him a bust? I love his glove but the bat has only been flashes here and there and these days a glove only 3B is pretty useless.
Mark P
8:59
Hayes was a league-average hitter just as recently as 2023, before injuries ruined him last year.  If he's healthy (admittedly a big if), that contract is going to look better for the Pirates.

But, on the smaller scale of the dynamic I mentioned earlier with Arenado, Hayes as a great glove with only average hitting may not be worth what Pittsburgh is paying him.  And because the Bucs spend so little, they need to get a bigger return for the players they chose to invest in

Are the Cubs still looking at Lynn or other sps?
Mark P
9:02
Perhaps, though Lynn might have been viewed more as a reliever by the Cubs.  Even under "you can never have enough pitching" logic, that report surprised me, since the Cubs (on paper) have plenty of rotation depth

On the Mariners’ quiet offseason: Seattle has 7 prospects in the top 100, which they were seemingly very open to trading. Was the asking price just too high, or do you think teams were holding out to try and squeeze Dipoto into trading a starter?
Mark P
9:05
I think it was Dipoto or Hollander who addressed this in an interview over the winter, saying that since so many teams have legitimate wild card hopes, there aren't many clubs interested in purely prospects.  Ergo, teams apparently kept asking the Mariners about just their starters, and someone like, say, Harry Ford didn't move the needle in trade talks

Joey Gallo Relief pitcher?!?!

There's a fourth outcome nobody would've predicted

If Gallo can make the transition, more power to him, it would be a fun story

Should Devers have tied an opt out to Bloom’s status the way Ohtani did with Friedman? Will more players consider this kind of mechanism in order to control their careers?
Mark P
9:08
Like most things related to Ohtani's contract, that clause is very unique.  I see very little chance other star players will have enough leverage to make those sort of demands put into writing as contractual clauses.
Dwight Evans
9:08
In follow up to Kam's question -- surely Devers has eyes and sees what Bregman is doing at 3B and how there is no comparison. Right??
Mark P
9:09
I'm sure Devers planned to eventually move to 1B down the road, but reading between the lines here, it seems like isn't pleased about having that decision being made for him so early into his extension.

I wonder if teams pay enough attention to young players diet & workouts throughout the year.
