The Pirates would've absolutely made sense as a Mountcastle suitor over the offseason.  Bringing a more proven guy like Mountcastle aboard would've been more helpful than taking something of a relative flier on Horwitz, even though I think Horwitz has potential.

What do you think about replacing the two team two game series to begin the year with sending a whole division to play a round robin?  It would greatly increase players getting a chance to experience it and give the fans more games to enjoy.

That might open up a few too many logistical issues for too many teams.  For one, divisions have five teams, so there's always an odd club out on any given day.  Plus, a round-robin element is a little alien to regular-season baseball, as it is so rooted in the idea of scouting reports over a multi-day series.

They won't spend nearly to the level required to sign Guerrero.  Trading for Mountcastle isn't really a fit since Naylor is already at 1B, and the D'Backs want to give Pavin Smith a good run of time at DH.  Plus, Grichuk is also there to get some DH at-bats at least against lefty pitching.

I outlined Dobnak's contract situation in the post earlier.  Basically I can see the Twins getting to the maximum five demotions/recalls before giving him any kind of lasting shot on the MLB roster, or they might just cut him.

Now, if Dobnak keeps performing as well as he did today, he'll certainly stick around.  But it seems like Minnesota views him as a 26th man at best.

Now that the season has actually started, it's not looking great for JDM landing anywhere.  He still needs a full stint in extended Spring Training to replicate the time he missed by not attending the real spring camp, and he'd be coming up at most to fill a DH spot that would have to be opened up by an in-season injury.

The Guardians generally keep their extension talks pretty close to the vest.  For instance, there weren't any hints that the Bibee extension was close until the deal was announced.

Kwan will be 28 at the end of this season, and he's only in his first arbitration year. So, an extension covers his age-30 season onward, and it might be that the Guards could prefer to just year-by-year.

If Bichette returns to his usual form, he'll get the larger deal because he's a bit younger and isn't a first-base only player.  Bichette isn't a great defensive shortstop, but he might be amendable to a position change if it helps his market.

Have you heard any rumblings as to what the Astros offered the Cardinals in exchange for the Arenado a couple of months back?  The Cards obviously liked the deal.  Arenado didn't of course.  I'm thinking he has a big first half and plays the Cardinals into a tough choice of to keep him and go for it in a weak division.  Or, trade him for best offer.

The player return has yet to be revealed, probably because the Astros would prefer to not make it public which player (who is maybe still on the roster?) was on the way out.  Or, it could be that the player return was pretty minimal, if the deal was largely just about a salary dump for the Cards
