That said, the Mariners have to be concerned, especially given that injuries have thinned out their rotation as a whole

If Ranger Suarez pitches well until the deadline and the rest of the staff is healthy and effective (with Painter up here in July), what kind of return might we get for him? And yeah - pitching depth is king so the chances of dealing him are low.
Mark P
8:04
Agreed that Suarez likely isn't being moved, as the Phillies will want as much pitching depth as possible down the stretch and for what they hope is a deep playoff run.

Even if they did explore trades, the return would be limited since Suarez is a free agent after the year.

Have there ever been big prospect for prospect trades? Like, could the pirates deal chandler to the Orioles for Mayo in a hitting for pitching deal?
Mark P
8:05
The Michael Pineda/Jesus Montero trade comes to mind as a major swap of top young talent.  The fact that that deal happened well over a decade ago underscores how rare these challenge trades are, however.
8:06
Chandler-for-Mayo is the kind of deal that makes sense on paper and would be a lot of fun to write about, haha.  But, if you're either the Bucs or O's, you've personally invested so much scouting and development time into your guy and dealing him for another unproven prospect carries extra risk.

Jazz Chisholm for Zac Gallen was another prospect-for-prospect trade
Mark P
8:08
That's a good shout, though Gallen wasn't considered in the same realm as an elite prospect.  Even that example is from 2019, so yeah, these types of trades are rare
Rizzo
8:09
Saw your piece on Anthony Rizzo.  Are you surprised about his situation and will a team step up and sign him?  Red Sox are obvious for no?
Mark P
8:11
The issue with signing Rizzo now is that he'll need at least a month to ramp up in the minors and at extended Spring Training.

Also, while I entirely understand Rizzo's point and why he feels it's unfair that he's getting such small offers, the fact is that he hasn't been a good hitter in two seasons.  Resume notwithstanding, it isn't a surprise that he didn't find much on the market, and that he remains unsigned here in May

Are the Marlins punching air that they didn’t trade Sandy already?
Mark P
8:13
Who knows what kinds of offers Miami was getting during the spring, and it's probably likely that they weren't too enticing.  Rival teams would've wanted to see what Alcantara would do in the regular season before stepping up with any kind of premium trade offer.
8:14
So in the world where the Marlins took a lowball offer and Alcantara still struggled, I guess you could call that a minor win?  But still not an ideal situation.

Comp picks
8:16
could we see another comp pick get traded?
Mark P
8:17
Sure, it's possible.  The Royals dealt a pick to Washington as part of the Hunter Harvey trade last year, within hours of the draft beginning

8:18
Do the Astros get a pick for the Red Sox signing Bregman?
Mark P
8:19
Technically they did, but that same extra pick ended up being forfeited because they signed Walker (like Bregman, a qualifying offer-rejecting free agent)
Jim

If the A's made JP Sears available, what kind of return could he bring in at the deadline? Innings eater, healthy, and 3 more years of control after this season.
Mark P
8:20
You've cited a few good reasons why the Athletics aren't likely to trade him, on top of the possibility that the A's might not be selling at the deadline anyway.

Would you recommend the Cubs trade some prospect capital for a good third baseman or continue with the multiple-options approach?
Mark P
8:21
I'd get Shaw back up for another look before deciding whether or not to bring another 3B candidate in
Billy Batts
8:23
More likey to see? A pitcher win 30 games, or a hitter bat .400?
Mark P
8:23
.400 hitter.  Pitching usage is changing enough that even a 20-game winning is getting increasingly rare.

Hope all the mothers out there had a great day!  I personally think my mom is the best, though I'm slightly biased on the matter

Rangers offense ever gonna fully round into shape? Most of the time a hitting coach doesn't have that much pull with players anymore
Mark P
8:27
Seager battling another injury doesn't help things, for sure.  The early coaching changes indicate that the Rangers are feeling some heat, yet you're right in that a coach is only one part of the equation.

The larger issues facing the Rangers are that Semien and Adolis have basically not really looked right until 2023, and Pederson/Burger have both contributed next to nothing

Was putting Matz in the pen the smartest move they could have done
Mark P
8:30
He's been so effective that it's hard to argue the move, if one could certainly point out that Matz wasn't at all an ineffective starter.  Having Matz suddenly as a multi-inning weapon has been a huge reason why the Cardinals have been rolling
Blake

The Pirates are a complete mess, they just fired Shelton, they can’t hit, and there pitching hasn’t been what we expected this year. On top of all that, Don Kelly is not a real manager. What’s next for the Pirates? Will they spend money?
Mark P
8:32
That's a pretty harsh assessment of Kelly, who might well be a terrific manager who's now getting a shot.

As for everything else, you're right that there's plenty going wrong in Pittsburgh, and Shelton was far from the only issue (if even a top five issue).  Whether this leads to Cherington being on the way out or not remains to be seen, but the bigger spending issues will hang over the team no matter the GM

When Lemahieu comes of the IL do the Yankees play him everyday and see if he still can play. And if not do the release him
Mark P
8:35
He'll get a good chunk of playing time, and a true everyday role isn't happening unless he performs.  A midseason release is maybe unlikely, but I guess the Aaron Hicks move wasn't too long ago.

I’d like so say how fed up I am with clickbait articles all over the internet about the Twins trading a top starter at the deadline. They are a half game out of wild card position!!
Mark P
8:37
What a week it's been in Minnesota.  While the Twins still face an uphill battle, this is another example of why "it's still early" is a valid counter to some pessimism.
