He just had his fourth rehab start, so he might just be another outing or two away from an IL activation

Okay, I'm starting to hit. Where in Greater Boston should I be looking for a condo?
Mark P
8:39
Even "starting to" hit might be an overstatement

Hey, I can give you a deal on a package of indulgences if you call tell me which White Sox are being traded this summer?
Mark P
8:43
They'll be open to trading any veterans, though as mentioned earlier, it's hard to see them moving Robert unless he's hitting well enough to merit the kind of big trade package the White Sox want.  As for anyone else, I think the Sox would be open to a lottery ticket prospect or salary relief.

By the way, the new Pope being a White Sox fan naturally leads me to believe he's visited MLBTR at some point.  One can only assume he got the idea for his papal name after reading a Leo Morgenstern post.

Why do players who have a long term injury start on the 10 day IL, then move to the 60 day later? (Ie Kris Bryant)
Mark P
8:44
Even in cases when a player is clearly going to be out for 60+ days, you'll still see them start off on the 10- or 15-day IL just for procedural reasons.  Most teams generally don't want to clear a 40-man roster spot until they need one.

Will Judge be MVP again this year?
Mark P
8:45
If he continues on this pace of (/checks notes)....uh, the greatest hitting season in history, then yes.

Hi! Hope you’re having a nice day. Given the Pirates payroll constraints, would it make sense for them to allocate resources differently. For instance, trade Mitch Keller for a controllable outfield bat. Call up Chandler to replace Keller and then utilize the money saved to sign another bat. They have a plethora of pitching to go with Jones and Oviedo on the IL. What type of bat is a realistic option for Keller?
Mark P
8:48
Keller signed his extension barely over a year ago, so it isn't a great look for the Pirates if they're already moving a player they seemingly locked up as a cornerstone so recently.  Keller has been okay but unspectacular as well, so now another team would have to be cool with assuming most/all of his upcoming salaries, in addition to parting ways with the controllable OF bat you're looking for.
8:49
Simply calling up Chandler in Mlodzinski's place seems like a more logical scenario than trying to move Keller to make room.  It should be noted that there was some trade speculation about Keller this past winter so a deal wouldn't be completely off the radar, but it's unlikely.

Thoughts on Javy Baez?  Did you see this solid defense coming?
Mark P
8:51
What a fun story it would be if Baez can keep this up and revive his career.  It could be that his injury problems were a bigger root cause of his struggles than anyone thought, so that hip surgery might have an absolute boon for him

Who currently regrets the Williams trade more: New York or Milwaukee?
Mark P
8:54
Probably the Brewers, because getting a good return on the inevitable Williams trade was more important to them than moving Cortes was to the Yankees.  And hey, if Durbin heats up, this conversation is perhaps totally different in a couple of weeks.

Leafs gonna win it all?

Win it all?!  Win it all?!  I'd be surprised if they beat the Panthers

Any chance Ohtani gets OF starts considering the Dodgers OF struggles/injuries?
Mark P
8:56
Quite unlikely.  I don't think the Dodgers want to put any added stress on Ohtani's arm.

Is the ms offense …… good? And the pitching …… meh? Is this bizzaro world? Pitching will get healthy and even out but the underlying offense numbers are good so will this continue and can they win this division?
Mark P
8:59
Heading into today, Seattle's 120 wRC+ was the third-best in baseball.  So yeah, wild times in the Pacific Northwest!

Polanco will surely come back to earth, but if guys with past track records like J-Rod or Garver hit better, that may balance things out.  It also helps the Mariners that the other AL West teams have their own share of issues, so it's thus far a very promising start.  (This series with the Jays notwithstanding.)

Is Jung hoo lee an all star this year?
Mark P

He's started to cool off and there are a lot of good OF candidates in the National League, so probably not

Am I gonna go back to my roots and trade for Bo at the deadline to be the starting shortstop?
Mark P
9:02
The Jays and Braves have made a few minor trades during Anthopoulos' tenure, so it's not like there's such hard feelings remaining that the teams have done no business.  But perhaps just for perception reasons alone, I have a hard time seeing the Blue Jays move Bichette to the Braves (of all teams) if the shortstop is indeed moved, or if the Jays sell at all

Crystal Ball time: What team is good now but currently set up to be a disaster in the next 2-3 years if the organization does not change its trajectory?
Mark P
9:03
Not sure if "disaster" is exactly the proper word, but the Phillies have a lot of money invested in a lot of veteran players.  They've got some interesting younger talent in the pipeline, but if the older guys start falling off, it's going to be a tricky situation for the franchise.

Chances Padres lose both King and Cease this off season?
Draft pick compensation is nice but trading one for a pitcher or two and a position MiLB just seems the smarter play.
Mark P
9:07
The window for trading either pitcher has likely closed, since the Padres are now in clear win mode.  Moving Cease or King during the offseason for another need would've been one thing, but doing it midseason is another matter, especially when the Padres arguably need more rotation help anyway.

Both aren't being re-signed, so it's just a matter of whether or not San Diego can re-sign one.  Given how much money they have committed to future payroll already, I have my doubts if either pitcher remains, or if the Padres can win a bidding war.

Robert Jr. doesn't seem to be a Stearns type of move.  Even if that is plausible, is his terrible start something that put out whatever embers of a deal might be there?
Mark P
9:10
I find it very easy to believe the Mets at least placed a call to the White Sox to lay some groundwork, out of due diligence if nothing else. Especially with Siri out, Stearns has probably been looking around for outfield help, either depth guys or bigger-ticket answers like Robert

Is this Torkelson season foreal? Has he turned the corner?
Mark P
9:13
Still plenty of swing-and-miss in his game, but Torkelson is crushing the ball and taking a lot of walks. The underlying potential was always there, so a breakout wouldn't be a surprise.
9:14
The "still early" caveat applies, but the advanced metrics back up the counting stats

That's two hours for this chat, so it's time to wrap things up. Thanks for all the questions, and we'll be back next weekend!
