I realize the grass always seems greener on the other side, and you're not wrong in arguing that Seattle needs to raise the talent floor.  But, Arcia hasn't hit much over his career, and his 2022-23 seasons are looking like outliers given how his bat has since cratered.
Jim
8:49
How likely is it that Jacob Wilson can maintain his slash line of .350/.393/.495 over a full season?
Mark P
8:50
With a .350 BABIP to match his average, some regression is inevitable.  Doesn't mean Wilson's breakout isn't for real, however.
Conradiction?
8:50
Your answer to Friars question suggested that the Padres decided to make one more run at contention this year, then your answer to Henry Dodger suggests they will return a core and likely reload to contend in 2026. What do you believe?
Mark P
8:51
To clarify, the Padres could have tried to thread the needle by trading Cease, King, Arraez, etc. this past winter, to both reload for 2025 and look ahead to 2026 and beyond.  But instead, they opted to largely run it back with their roster in the hopes of replicating or topping 2024's magic.
8:52
I see the Padres' logic in sticking with the players they have and already trust, rather than hoping they can again hit it big with another blockbuster trade that brings a lot of new talent into the system.

JP Sears and Luis Urias to the Yankees for Ben Hess and Carlos Lagrange - who says no?
Mark P
8:55
The A's would want a lot more for Sears, who is controlled through 2028
O no
8:56
If the O’s are back to 8 games under .500 by June 30, what’s their plan for the trade deadline?
Mark P
8:57
As dire as that situation may seem, the Orioles have enough invested in this team that they'll wait until later into July (at least until the All-Star break) before deciding whether or not to sell.  An early-July hot streak, for instance, that gets them back to .500 might convince them to hold the course until closer to the 31st
Giants need a Bat
8:59
It’s painfully obvious that SF needs a stop gap Bat at First base.  Who might be available until Bryce Eldridge is ready?
Mark P
9:00
If Washington remains out of the race, Nathaniel Lowe would be an interesting get. Since he's under arbitration control through 2026, he provides 1B help for both this year and next, allowing Eldridge some adjustment time, or the Giants can play both at 1B/DH
Twin Cities
9:01
Are the twins buyers to increase playoff hopes or sellers for a rebuild of sorts at the deadline?
Mark P
9:02
At this point they look like buyers, to a limited extent.  I don't foresee any big splashy trades that would boost the payroll, but if the Twins remain above .500 and in the AL Central hunt, they surely won't be unloading salaries

Any chance the Pirates could make Oneil Cruz available? Vaguely reminds me of Jazz Chisholm as far as the positional situation goes (with the bat a little bit too maybe?) - could there be a fit there with the Yankees at 3rd?
Mark P
9:04
As with Skenes, the Pirates aren't trading any of these building-block type of players any time soon.  Doing so would just crush the fanbase even more, plus there's also the question of whether or not ownership would allow Cherington (if he's on the hot seat) to make any prominent trades now, or save those bigger-picture decisions for the next GM
Best ballpark
9:06
Oracle park is the best MLB stadium. Prove me wrong.
Mark P
9:06
It is high on my list, minimum top three

One should definitely always bring a jacket to any night game, no matter what the temperature was during the day
Orioles Blues
9:07
I admit this perspective on the Orioles is a serious silver lining, but could it be that they’re actually lucky to be tanking this badly, this early in the season? They clearly weren’t built to compete with the starting rotation they assembled over the offseason—making the pre-rebuild days of Ubaldo Jimenez, Chris Tillman, Yovani Gallardo, Jeremy Hellickson, Wade Miley, and Bud Norris look like a strength by comparison.
Now, instead of desperately trading prospects for short-term rentals, they have the opportunity to flip the script and trade their own rentals for pitching prospects. If they’ve learned from past mistakes and manage to sign a few reliable arms in the offseason—while also maintaining a core of young, controllable talent—then 2026 could look very different.

9:09
This is a nicely positive take on the situation!  The O's would hardly be the only good team to have a "year from hell" that interrupts an otherwise good run of success.  Assuming they can't get on track in 2025, it will force the club to re-evaluate things (a process that has already started, given Hyde's firing) and perhaps remodel to become a team build to contend, rather than Elias' initial model of an organization built to have an ideal rebuild.

9:14
In Nick Pivetta's first start they said that the first thing the Padres pitching coach did was change where Pivetta was positioned on the rubber - and it's made a huge difference to his start of the year.  Is the Padres pitching coach that much smarter than Andrew Bailey (Red Sox pitching coach)?  Seems so simple and obvious.
Mark P
9:16
Stories like these are what makes baseball so difficult for players and coaches.  There's no one single solution that works for every player, and a seemingly minor adjustment can work wonders for one guy and do nothing for someone else.  Bailey has a good track record as a coach, and I'm sure he's found a lot of little things that have unlocked a lot of other pitchers.

9:17
Any reason for the Nats not to call up Brady House and get him plugged into that gaping hole at third base?
Mark P
9:19
House had a rough 2024 season, so the Nationals likely want to see him have another sustained run of success in the minors before thinking about a call-up.  That turn-around seems to have come, as House is posting some nice numbers this year.  It'd be surprising if House isn't on the Nats before 2025 is out, which will then spawn umpteen "the House Is In Session In D.C." puns

What do the sox do about Story?  He's become a liability offensively but that contract is absurd
Mark P
9:21
Beyond eating virtually all of his salary in a trade, or dealing Story for another undesirable contract, there isn't much the Sox can do except hope that he can heat up at the plate.
9:26
Had to pause the chat to fire up a quick headline there....the Rockies are nearing a deal with Orlando Arcia

9:28
Do you expect the reds to call up Chase petty this year?
Mark P
9:28
They already did call Petty up, for two starts that went quite poorly

Any chance justin crawford gets a shot he looks like he would be an upgrade in cf?
Any chance justin crawford gets a shot
Mark P
9:30
Crawford is only 44 games into his Triple-A career, but he's hitting well and is wreaking some havoc on the bases.  Another month or so of this and he'll give the Phillies little choice but to give him a look in the Show

Chase Burns
Mark P
9:31
Aha, that's the Chase you meant!  Burns isn't like to make his debut this year just because he has so little pro experience under his belt, and the Reds probably don't feel the need to rush him.  But, the early returns have been strong enough that Burns is certainly on pace to arrive in Cincy in 2026
Sox fan
9:34
Nothing Sox can do with Story other than hope he heats up again? What are the precedents (if any) for DFAing a player with that much money left on his contract? It seems like a case study in the sunk-cost fallacy...
Mark P
9:35
Off the top of my head, Pablo Sandoval comes to mind as another Red Sox player.  I think Boston DFA'd and ultimately released him during the third season of the Panda's five-year deal.
9:36
I don't see the Sox going that route with Story just yet, but perhaps simply given their crowded infield situation, something might have to be done this coming offseason

9:38
How long do you think the Giants can hold off bringing up Carson Whisenhurt to help solidify the rotation???
Mark P
9:39
Here's another player bound to debut at some point in 2025, except the Giants first want to see what Birdsong/Harrison/Roupp can all do in the rotation
