While the Phils' lineup isn't perfect, the bullpen is certainly the bigger need.

Harper's absence certainly contributed to things, but to be fair, the Phillies also ran into a red-hot Brewers team at exactly the wrong time.

If the Rangers were to DFA Adolis Garcia, what are the odds a team would claim him and pick the remainder of his $10.5M contract? I think it would about $6.5M left. It’s pretty slim right?
Mark P
9:03
As much as Garcia has struggled, 2023 is near enough in the memory that I think he'd still get claimed. That money might be tight for a smaller-market team like the Royals, Guardians, or Reds, but those are three teams right off the top of my head that are in bad need of outfield help.

9:04
Who are the top bats available this trade deadline in your opinion?  Could Tucker be had for a good package?
Mark P
9:05
Tucker?  KYLE Tucker?  The star outfielder for the first-place Cubs?  You think he'll be traded?!

(This was typed in the same tone as Wayne Campbell's "gun rack" speech from Wayne's World.)

Would the Pirates really trade Bryan Reynolds for the right price. Should Cleveland consider getting him?
Mark P
9:08
Reynolds is also too pricey for the Guardians, though he'd obviously help the outfield a lot.

What would it take for Cora to get fired? How many yrs do we need to miss the playoffs?
Mark P
9:10
Cora just signed a new extension last summer, so he's not going anywhere.

This is purely speculative on my part, and it seems wild to write this not even two years into his tenure, but I wonder if Breslow is facing more heat than Cora.  As we've seen over the last decade, Sox ownership has had a pretty quick hook with front office bosses

Byron Buxton & Griffin Jax - Aroldis Chapman & Rob Refsnyder or Mike Trout & Reid Detmers? Which pair would you target if you were DD & Co.?
Mark P
9:12
Chapman/Refsnyder is by far the most likely of that group to be available at the deadline.  The Twins are in contention, and Trout's contract is basically immovable (and the Angels wouldn't deal him anyway)
tigers
9:13
Tigers farm system is loaded and they are the arguably the best team in AL right now. In order to compete with Yankees and Dodgers in Playoffs, should they look at trading some mid level prospects to get Hensley and Arenado ? And if so, on paper is it enough to keep pace with Yankees and Dodgers?
Mark P
9:14
Arenado reportedly had no interest in waiving his no-trade clause to join the Tigers last winter, so that probably hasn't changed now.  Also, the Cardinals are in contention, so they're more likely to be buyers than sellers.

To your larger point, however, Detroit can or should be aggressive at the deadline.  They have a nice lead in the ALC at the moment, but those are some good teams behind them that can still make a run.

Anthony Franco had a recent piece for MLBTR subscribers on this very topic recently, so I'll cede the floor to Anthony
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/05/the-diamondbacks-surprisingly-m...

My take is that the rotation has been massively disappointing, especially since the lineup lost so many key bats but has remained very productive.  The D'Backs just can't seem to fix the pitching problems in either the rotation or the pen, and they don't have the margin for error in the NL West to get by

Could the Orioles expect a big hail for Ryan O’hearn?
Mark P
9:22
I assume this was a typo for "haul," unless O'Hearn has weather-summoning powers like Storm from the X-Men

O'Hearn is a free agent after the season, so being a rental player would limit his price tag if the O's sell.  His BABIP is sky high, and some regression is bound to happen before the deadline.  That said, even the 2023-24 version of O'Hearn is a solid and useful enough player that the Orioles would find plenty of interest.

If the Dodgers hadn't spent 16 MILLION on Conforto, would they be holding on to him so tightly?
Mark P
9:25
Conforto has one of the biggest wOBA/xwOBA gaps of any player in baseball, his walk rate is elite, and his good contact has been undermined by horrid BABIP luck.

So there's plenty of reason here to think Conforto can start living up to the advanced metrics, and to this same end it makes sense why the Dodgers keep playing him.  As much as others are performing better and need playing time, LA's lineup is so loaded that they can somewhat afford to be patient and just see how things play out heading towards October

The Brewers seem to be playing themselves back into relevance this week. What can we expect they might add at the deadline if all goes well? Lord know they have some pitching to spare.
Mark P
9:29
3B/SS are the obvious target areas.  Ortiz and Durbin may be the future answers, but getting a veteran (even a rental player) who can hit right now would be a big boost to the Brewers' chances here in 2025.
9:30
To reiterate my comment from last week, it's wild that the Brewers have now gone from an absurd lack of pitching to a surplus within just two months.

What happened?  We were playing so well and now we are out of it.  Which players are available if we keep losing and should we move Miller now if he can get quality prospects?
Mark P
9:33
Same answer as earlier about the Rangers.....the impending free agents will be the first ones on the market, so that's Andujar or Urias as probably generating the most interest out of that bunch
9:34
As to whether or not the A's might consider moving some longer-term assets like Miller, I lean towards no.
9:35
As to what happened in this nightmarish few weeks of baseball for the A's, it's a combination of teams getting a book on an overachieving pitching staff, plus the A's also had mostly a very tough stretch of opponents

Without injuries, the Nats look like they have 5 guys who could start in OF for any team in the league (albeit needing some more experience). Likelihood they trade one or more for another long-term contract to fill a hole?
Mark P
9:39
Wood and Crews obviously aren't going anywhere, Hassell's in that same boat, and Young/Call are pre-arb.  I'm not sure I see the Nats moving any of them.

If Burns is out and the Dbacks are sellers; what would the Yankees have to give up to get Eugenio Suarez?
Mark P
9:42
Suarez would become maybe the top rental bat available at the deadline if the D'Backs did decide to sell.  Even as a pending free agent, his power numbers are big enough that Arizona can get away with asking for top-100 type of return.

For the Yankees, that would be players from the Hess/Cunningham group, since obviously they aren't trading Lombard or Spencer Jones for a rental guy.

Is Chris Sale a Hall of Famer at the end of the day?
Mark P
9:44
It would be weird of the HOF to convene an emergency session within the next two hours to automatically induct a still-active player.

Serious answer: yeah, Sale is making it in

is Brenton Doyle still on the Rockies roster in August or do you think he’ll be traded this summer?
Mark P
9:46
I don't think he'll be traded.  Firstly, Doyle's lack of hitting has cratered his value.  Secondly, like I said earlier, I have my doubts as to whether or not the Rockies will change their ways even in the face of a 120+loss season.  Broadly, the Rox should be open to dealing basically anyone, even controllable players like Doyle.

Will I turn my season around?  Should the Orioles use me as DH for awhile to get me back to full strength?
Mark P
9:50
Rutschman is another player who has been strangely unlucky, if you look at the Statcast and BABIP numbers.  But, he isn't making good contact and his power has already significantly dropped off even over the course of his short career.

Not sure what the answer is, but having a struggling hitter as a DH-only guy doesn't seem to be it.
