Redbirds

We were picked to tank. Is this real?
Mark P
9:51
You wouldn't believe the number of "should the Cardinals trade X or Y at the deadline" questions I've gotten in this chat alone, despite St. Louis' good record.
Joey Votto wants to know

What keeps the Reds from getting those two outfield bats for the last two years, will or no skill?
Mark P
9:55
Cincinnati's outfield group, on paper, works given the platoon splits and the upside.  Unfortunately, in practice, injuries or under-performance keep combining to make the OF mix less than the sum of its parts.

Getting Hays was a step in the right direction, but he needs to stay healthy

Rooting for the Pacers?
Mark P
9:56
No-lose situation in the NBA finals for me.  Either my fellow Canadian SGA gets a ring, or ex-Raptor Siakam gets his second.  I think I'm leaning towards rooting for the Pacers just because you never see a totally random team get hot and win the NBA title, as happens so often in baseball, hockey, or football

Why would Boston call up Nate Eaton before Roman Anthony??
Mark P
9:57
Eaton can play in only a couple of games per week and it isn't a big deal. When Anthony finally gets the call, the Sox want him playing every day.

How good is Cal Raleigh?
Mark P
9:58
Good enough that we can almost start having the "is this the best catcher season ever?" conversation, even though it's only June 1

The Mariners locking Raleigh up to an extension in April is looking like one of the year's smartest moves

Isn't Suarez a DH masquerading as a third baseman? Why would team give up a top 100 prospect for a guy that shouldn't even be on the field?
Mark P

Because he can really slug

Do you think Reds could get Cruz away from Pirates with package of Burns/Petty/Hector Rodriguez/Carlos Jorge
Mark P
10:02
If Burns is included, the Pirates might have a meeting about it.  But, you'd think Pittsburgh would want a hitter-heavy package since they have lots of pitching already.

Also, if the Pirates did move Cruz, there is no way they'd trade him to a division rival.
Nolan Ryan

Were Randy Johnson and I equally as dominant?
Mark P
10:02
At Ryan's best, yes they were.  But Randy was more consistent, which is why I have Johnson top five all-time and Ryan outside my top ten.

With Brewers being one of the hottest teams in  baseball right now, what do you see them doing at the deadline?
Mark P
10:04
As noted earlier, upgrading the left side of their infield.
One thing I probably should've mentioned is that while trading from their SP depth seems like the logical move, one should always put an asterisk besides any mention of a "pitching surplus."  As the Brewers experienced first-hand just earlier this year, a couple of injuries can quickly thin out any surplus.
So, I don't expect Milwaukee to go overboard in trading pitchers since they'll certainly want plenty on hand for the rest of the year, for the future, and for what they hope will be a nice playoff run this October
A’s
10:07
So I understand their reason for the roster shuffle is to snap that slump. BUT…as a fan, I’d rather see players with the team and entire year than shuffle them back and forth. That’s why I look over at the Giants and admire Posey’s approach to stick with the guys he has for the most part. What do you think?
Mark P
10:09
I haven't published any of them yet, but there have been several "what can the Giants do to shake up their lineup?" questions in the queue, so Posey's approach isn't exactly airtight.

When you're in as dire a stretch as the Athletics, shaking things up seems like a better move than standing pat.  The A's are a better team than this, and hopefully things will normalize to some extent soon.

Is Nick Krall getting fired if the Reds miss the playoffs?
Mark P
10:10
Krall signed an extension in September 2023, and it seems like ownership is very loyal to him.  So, I doubt he's going anywhere

I've been watching ryan weathers in Miami. Guy is an ace in the making. How much would it take to get him with having a much higher career era.
Mark P
10:13
Weathers is a former first-rounder and former top-100 prospect, so it isn't like teams have forgotten about his pedigree or view him as a buy-low candidate.  The Marlins are certainly not moving him for anything less than top dollar, and I doubt he's dealt whatsoever since he's controlled through 2028.

"Do the Marlins plan to have a competitive team by 2028" is a fair question, but overall, Weathers isn't getting traded any time soon.

Might the Dodgers give me a call? Stranger things have happened, right?
Mark P
10:14
At this rate, the Dodgers will have so many pitching injuries that the actual cast of Stranger Things might get some bullpen innings.
10:15
And, with the breaking news of the Royals calling up Caglianone, it's time to wrap this chat up.  The 58.6% of you who voted for Jac in the poll were correct!

Thanks for all the questions, and we'll be back with more chatter next weekend.
