What's a fair asking price for Gerritt Cole in terms of Twins players / prospects?

Thanks for chatting! Any buzz about whether a Braun trade could happen this summer? Seems increasingly likely that he'll end up playing out his contract in Milwaukee, possibly to the detriment of some of that system's OF prospects.
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
I am just not sure how they can trade Braun if they are firmly in the mix for the postseason -- let alone the danged division. There's plenty of time for them to fall back, so it might end up being a clear selling stance. But if not, I think he stays through the end of the year.
2:32
If they aren't just in clear contention then perhaps they go ahead and make a move. I don't think they'll let it truly hamper the development of any prospects, regardless.
I mean ... they could always trade from the OF prospects if they really felt they had a surplus/logjam situation.

Will the Mets be sellers in July? At least with one or more FAs to be?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
More likely they sit tight unless they really bottom out between now and then.

Does the "on the block" report mean we could expect a Hand trade well in advance of the deadline? Or does it have no implications for the timing of a trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Doubt it means too much in terms of timing. I mean ... the Padres are the most obvious seller in the game.
But it does suggest they view him as an asset they are ready to move, so that increases the likelihood in my mind.

Even if the Phillies eat half of Hellickson's $17+ million, can they get much more than a very low tier prospect back?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Not the way he is throwing. I know the ERA isn't terrible but yeesh ... what is it like 3.5 K/9?
Ellsbury
2:35
Concussion and neck sprain for Ellsbury probably makes a Gardner trade a lot less likely.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Yeah I was going to mention that, but ... it's still two months from the deadline. Unless that turns out to be a really significant injury, likely won't matter a ton.

2:37
Do you see the Reds being sellers irregardless of their position in the standings toward the end of July?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
No, just b/c if they somehow were in first then they would probably not sell. But they are not well-positioned in that division.
2:38
I mean it would take a miracle -- Bailey/DeSclafani/Finnegan come back and pitch like Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine -- for Cinci to leapfrog the three teams ahead of them. But they do have those three pitchers working back and all have talent.
2:39
Anyhow, I expect the Reds to be mostly quiet since they don't have much to sell. Cozart & Storen, mostly.
Manny

Most likely SP the Astros trade for?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
I like the idea of them going after a really good, controllable guy and I think they absolutely should go big. They are dominating the AL right now and the talent is real. Time to push the pedal down.

With salary cap penalties going as high as 95% is it really realistic that Harper or machado gets 400/500 million?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Teams have been shelling out tens of millions in penalties for Latin American teenagers. And those massive guarantees would be spread over very long terms -- doubt we'll see AAV passing 50 mil in any single season. So I think it can all be shoved in under the cap (which is also going up) ... or not too much over, anyway.

Do you see Tanner Roark's performance to date (prior to last night) as more evidence of the negative effect the WBC has on players, pitchers especially.
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Mostly evidence that he's a solid pitcher who had a dream season last year.
Brian
2:43
No BS ... after his less than dominant start to this season ... what would a return for Jose Quintana look like if he was traded today?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
It's not just a bidding situation where every team puts out an offer. It's a question whether a bid goes high enough for the White Sox to bite. They can reasonably stand on the idea that he's suffering mostly from bad fortune, that his track record suggests he'll rebound, etc.
I don't see a reason for them to drastically lower the asking price unless they really feel he isn't himself.
Query
2:45
True or false: Lance Lynn is the most underrated starter?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
False. See above re Roark, but in reverse.
2:46
Lynn is probably a better pitcher than Roark, but I don't see much reason to think he's a 2.50-ish ERA guy.
Don't get me wrong -- really good pitcher. Just saying, I don't think he's a hidden ace.
Brian
2:47
Quintana, Robertson, Frazier, Holland, Swarzak, maybe Abreu ... could yield how many Top 100 Prospects for the White Sox this summer?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
I'll set the over/under at 2.5, assuming they trade Q and DRob.
And that Q bounces back and DRob keeps throwing well.
Don't really think they will end up moving Abreu and the others won't be bringing back that kind of return.

That Otani piece and expansion draft piece by Wasserman were really cool and interesting. Thanks for adding that to your site. Also, thanks for these chats. Love these too.
