What sort of a return could Brandon Belt fetch?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Not happening, first of all. But there'd be plenty of interest in him because he's an excellent player on a good contract.
Not a great contract, but a pretty good one.

IF Koda Glover were to lock up closing duties between now and the deadline do you think the nats would still look to add a closer? Obviously they need to add an arm regardless but if Koda continues to pitch well why move him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
If Glover suddenly doubles his K rate, maybe ... but it's exceedingly likely IMO that they add a closer (as they have in each of the last two years) as well as other setup arms.

After reading the Otani thing, if you were a GM, would you let him be a two way player?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
This is what's so great about it -- because he's not just going to be signing for the biggest contract (every team will be capped at a similar level), it's going to be pretty much entirely about where he feels comfortable. So if he really wants to play both ways, then GMs better offer that opportunity.
And heck yeah I would. Would I give him $300MM and then let him play both? I don't know. But under the circumstances, why not? If nothing else, there's tremendous upside and fascinating roster possibilities to having him as your DH 3 days a week or whatever it would be.
3:16
Okay going to be wrapping up shortly but I'll try to grab a few more ...

Eric Thames comeback strong enough to get comeback player of the year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Not sure whether returning from KBO counts, but yeah.

3:17
But framing statistics on me have been inconsistent. I've gone from excellent, to terrible, to above average, to worst? I mean...just saying...
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Yeah, I don't know ... I haven't looked closely. So ... everyone go read Lindbergh's piece and we'll talk about that further next week, ha.

Mariners buyers or sellers at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Limited sellers.

Only said "I mean" five times in the chat so far today. Not feeling well?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
And I did it at least one more time since you left this comment.
I enjoyed your book when I was a child.

i think people really fail to understand the whole premium on talent from win now teams when they talk about buying and selling. It is really inefficient to trade for a guy at the deadline and waste half a year + playoffs of that value.
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
That's right. The reason is that teams in a clear buy position are willing to pay more because they know they are in that position, have a reasonable expectation of utilizing the player in the postseason, and know as well as they ever will what exactly their team needs.

I feel like "top 100 prospect" is such an over used term that is entirely too vague. The difference between prospect 11 and prospect 65 is stark. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Absolutely. And the difference between 100 and 140 is probably in the eye of the beholder.
3:24
When I say "top 100 type" or something, I am probably referring to guys in the 60-150 range in terms of ranking.
It's imprecise ... just it's hard to discuss otherwise. Maybe we should try to use future value ratings.

Is Donaldson still a Blue Jay after th etrade deadline passes?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Yes.

How much of their bullpen would the ChiSox have to offer Mike Rizzo to get Robles back? 3 arms? 4?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
He's not going for relief help.
Rob
3:25
Could the Pirates get both Frazier and Torres in a package for Cole?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Would be reasonable to ask, but guessing the Yanks wouldn't do it.

Situation #1: Jeffrey Todd has just been named GM of Team X. Ownership tells him if he gets the team a WS ring, the job is his to keep. What team do you pick and what is the deal you make to get the team to the championship.
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
Astros (clearest path) and trade for Kershaw.
Non-serious answer there, on the trade side at least, but it's a fun question! Just don't have time to think.

With the new rules for International players going into effect, what does Otani cost a team next year if posted?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
$20MM posting fee + $5-6MM max bonus + future salaries.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr
3:27
Will I make it to the bigs later this year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
Nah that's just too soon.

3:28
Does the Chisox signing of Robert eliminate their chances at Otani?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Quite possibly. Doubt they felt it was likely they'd get him anyway. But that's perhaps more interesting w/r/t some other teams that went past their pools.
But I have now gone past my pool ... of time for chatting. (Nice.)
