Unless the Padres are really just interested in auctioning Hand off early, they will probably be setting too high an asking price. The Nats probably don't feel desperate given the division lead -- not to mention the fact that the pen has stabilized a bit.

The Tigers really need pitching and more so a closer. You can't make a living just trying to out score your opponent 9-8 every game. It's not realistic. What are you hearing?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
Given their broader prerogatives, the organization isn't in position to be making deadline additions unless they really go on a run here. More likely they end up dealing JD Martinez.

are Angels in rebuild mode?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
I wouldn't describe it that way. Purgatory mode, perhaps?
Troy
2:29
how likely is it Todd Frazier is moved?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
He's about as likely as any position player is to be dealt, I'd say.
Gary Geiger
2:29
is Terry Collins hanging by the preverbial thread
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Just don't see that there's much to be gained at this point. Last thing they need is more media circus.

What will the Rays get if they trade Colome? More or less than Miller got for the Yanks?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Well, the contract is better. But Colome has just not been pitching to the level of dominance Miller was last year (or that Colome was last year for that matter). ERA is still there but he's not getting as many whiffs.

When can we finally say that it's not "too early" and Quintana has significantly damaged his value? I understand he got rocked in a couple of starts and has been decent in the rest, but won't teams look at overall bottom-line results at least a bit?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
I agree in that the offers would be lower right now. But there's still two months before the deadline, and if he pitches like his usual self the rest of the way I think this'll mostly be viewed as a blip.
Enrique Martinez
2:32
Im curious if dbacks will do some shuffling with their bullpen, or trade or maybe even pick up a closer from somewhere? nathan, broxton?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Guys like those can always be thrown into the mix at Triple-A, but there's a reason they were cut loose. I expect Arizona will go with internal options (or whatever can be had for free). If they are really in the hunt at the deadline, they could look at adding some cheap rentals or perhaps a more significant, controllable arm.

If Rockies contend this year, Rodgers for Cole? Who hangs up first?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
If they are really and truly in it -- like, in the division hunt and a pretty clear wild card team -- then I think the Rockies ought to be willing to do something bold like that.

Will the Nats every try Joe Ross in the pen? If hes the number five come playoffs, they wont need him as a starter anyways
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Rizzo made pretty clear that wasn't happening.
Marwin Gonzales

Do I end making the trip to Miami for the ASG?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Could definitely see him being named by the manager.

another rough night from Tanaka last night. If he keeps pitching at this level will he opt out or stick with the guaranteed money?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
I would be surprised if he ends the year with a 6.34 ERA or something, but if he does, it'd be hard to justify not just keeping the money. His K/BB are still in normal range. I still think he's going to come around enough to opt out (I mean, from a rational market perspective; who knows his personal motivations).

What's a Grandal extension look like? 4/60?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
I mean ... you're basically talking about extending a guy who's entering the final year of his contract. (He'll be 5+ after the season, which is likely when talks would occur.) Typically, that means you have to pay something approaching market rate. He's now pretty firmly established as one of the game's best-hitting catchers and isn't that old, so that sounds light.

Grandal + Eflin for Kemp one of the least appreciated but lopsided trades in recent memory amiright
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Yup.

Will the Nats end up getting a new SS and moving Trea to CF with Michael a hitting so well?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
If Taylor is really doing enough to justify semi-regular time as of late July, I would expect they'd lean toward finding a CF-capable left-handed bat.
Burt
2:43
Jed Lowrie would look good back in Boston. He could be our Zobrist.
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
More likely just "your third baseman," but yeah, it's possible. They will take their time and look at all options. I wouldn't rule out a significant corner infield addition.

plus or minus 2.5 top 100 ish prospects and 2.5 second and 3rd tear prospects if the twins deal santana dozier and kintzler this summer
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
Under, easily.
I mean, unless Santana somehow maintains this and Dozier repeats last year's tear.
So as of right now, I'm taking the under handily.
Jace Peterson Sr
2:47
At this point would it be safe to call Dansby a huge bust?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
No more or less than it would've been to call him a huge success after his debut last year.
So, no.

Where do the Cubs have to be relative to the .500 mark to cash in on Arrieta, Lackey, Davis, Montero?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
I guess Cubs fans are back to being pessimistic already!
