Who's going to be my closer October 1st?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Other contenders need to add like 4 relievers. I'm surprised the pen has been as bad as it has, and there's still time to evaluate, but I think multiple useful relievers could be more important than necessarily getting the perfect closer.
I do think there'll be a few options for established guys.
Angels playoff chances
2:32
Do you see the Angels making the playoffs by wild card?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Still possible, but not my pick.
Tyler
2:33
Do the Braves experiment with Matt Adams as an OF when Freddie comes back?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
There's really no reason to do that, since we already saw what that looks like and he's just not that great of a hitter. But sure, why not?
Adam
2:33
Would Jaime Garcia be a fit for Colorado? A veteran known for keeping the ball on the ground could stabilize that rotation
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Seems sensible, sure. He has function for sure. I do think the Rockies need to weigh a bigger move, though. If this isn't the time to push some pieces in, what is? Make it a controllable starter so it's not just an all-in move.
Austin
2:35
What about Yunel Escobar for the Red Sox? He wouldn't cost much prospect wise and is a hit machine.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Lots of options floating around. But if they see a path to the division, probably need to at least try for a pretty significant player.
Scherzer's Blue Eye

Please, for my sanity, tell me the Nats have something cooking for reliever(s). I don't care if it's true. Just tell me. Lie to me Jeffrey. LIE TO ME!!!
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Of course they do. Added a pair last year, didn't they? It'll come.

2:37
The Cubs starting staff has been subpar so far this year. Do you contribute some of that to losing David Ross? Lester had a 4.00+ ERA until the other night...
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
Mostly just normal variation and aging. Also the D hasn't been as good. I said before the season that the rotation was the biggest question mark, and it has been just that.
Rangers
2:38
Do the struggles of Quintana, Cole, and Gray make Yu Darvish more attractive if he's available this summer?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
For premium players, yes, the alternative supply does matter quite a bit. Even though those pitchers are in different asset classes -- Darvish being a rental -- it matters. If you want an ace and Yu is the only available arm who's acting like one, then it increases his appeal.

Jason Motte quietly having rebound year...any value there?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
His peripherals are terrible. Not seeing it right now.
Brian
2:40
How is it even justifiable that Cecchini gets the call over Rosario?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Because they aren't sure how long they need to cover for just yet.
2:41
It's not that surprising. Also, I think fans are likely expecting more from Amed than they'll get out of the gates. We have been spoiled by Correa and Lindor and Seager and co.
JC
2:41
Does Cozart get moved at/before the trade deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
I think he has to. Probably not a qualifying offer guy for Cinci.
KO
2:42
Will the Giants be looking for real prospects to get Melancon or just someone to eat the contract?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
He hasn't been that great and his contract only gets worse after the first season -- just by the nature of things, esp for a somewhat older reliever. Assuming they can get past the no-trade clause, I think they'd mostly be looking to find a taker for the contract.
2:44
He has mostly been himself, though if he can't tamp back down the HR and BABIP then we also have to downgrade expectations a bit.
Brian
2:44
Is Jordan Zimmerman attractive to a potential buyer at all after his latest string of nice outings?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Full NTC (which he could well use - he signed there to be near his native Wisconsin) and the contract still looks like a burden. Doesn't seem a likely trade piece to me.
Okay Mets fans ... the news ain't great
2:46
Partially torn hammy for Walker ... sounds like it is likely a grade 2 (maybe 3-4 weeks if he heals up)
And "stress injury to scapula" for Harvey.
2:47
They say several weeks for Harvey, but who knows.

2:47
I read a column suggesting the Jays trade Osuna even if they're in the hunt. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
It's always going to be popular to argue for trading controllable relievers. Especially after the Miller and Chapman deals. But the rest of the market gets that there's risk, too, and if you trade that guy you are obviously hurting your team.

Syndergaard won’t throw for approximately 4 weeks, per Sandy.
So mid-August is perhaps best case for a return (total guess on my part).
Likely longer.

2:49
If Adams continues to hit and drive in runs at the pace he has with the Braves, what could he bring when Freeman returns?
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
Other teams know who he is -- he's swinging well right now but is basically the same guy when you look under the hood. There are lots of other defensively limited sluggers who are out there (and a few that aren't so limited). I wouldn't expect a ton.
