Tony Watson still able to generate a decent prospect in a trade?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Another lefty to compete in the Brad Hand  market. Yes, he still has value, though certainly it's down a bit. He has always outperformed his peripherals, but now they have sunk quite a bit. Dingers are the big problem right now.

Over/under 2.5 trade by the White Sox at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
Over.

Does Alex Avila have value.  Hearing cubs are kicking the tires
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
Some, sure. He might be most interesting for a team that sees a way to use him as a part-time catcher while also giving him PAs at DH and as a bench bat. Not every roster will really allow that.
I haven't looked closely at catcher demand, but it's not typically robust mid-season. Lucroy last year was something  of an anomaly.

Even tho gleyber is hurt does he have as much trade value as he did before? Considering he won't be back until next year
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Probably more, since he pummeled upper-minors pitching in his first attempt. Injury isn't a long-term concern.

It seemed like for years many baseball analytic experts pushed the idea that 'strikeouts were no worse than any other type of out' but the last couple seasons I've seen more & more people use K% as an important tool in analyzing a batter's performance.  Do you have any insight into what may have caused this apparent change in thinking?  Thanks!

I don't know that I read it that way. It doesn't matter too much if a guy strikes out or gets out some other way (assuming we are eliminating batted ball luck, theoretically). GB can turn into a DP, while flyouts can allow runners to advance. That probably mostly balances out.

Swing and miss proclivities are used to assess how productive a player will be going forward. It's something of a difference between valuing what has happened and assessing a player's true talent (and thus predicting what they'll do in the future).

Why does the media not mention how bad David Price's contract is?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
There's no sense in just saying that over and over. But the Boston media covers him like hawks. They are making clear the difference in cost/performance.

Who gets a better return: Hand or Reed?
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
I'd lean Hand b/c of the control. But I think Reed is probably the better pitcher for the next 3-4 months. Not by any huge gap, but he has been really good.

J Wilson and Blevins have similar value/asking price?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Yes, but the TIgers have way more reason (IMO) to make a deal.
Going to try a little rapid fire round here to wrap things up.

Cards trade Pham to SD for Brad Hand.   Sound fair?
Jeffrey Todd

Not happening.

No.

Never count the Dodgers out on a waiver wire reliever.

Is Jonathan Villar regretting passing on the Brewers extension offer or can he still recover from a terrible start to the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
He was right to bet on himself, if rumored offer price (in 20's) was true, but still could come to regret. That's the risk.

What could the Padres expect in return for Clayton Richard?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Lowrie-level, generally. (See above.)
Perhaps another notch down.

Do you guys post all of the rumors you hear? I'm sure they're hundreds of rumors
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Nope. Only the ones we assess to have credibility.

How come no one brings up Matt Davidsons name in a possible trade to the BoSox?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Good example of what I addressed above re K rate. He is whiffing at a crazy rate but also making good contact. Doesn't seem very sustainable. Don't see him as a trade piece right now.

That Smyly injury hurt, didn't it?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Big hit when you consider they lost him through the end of his contract. Basically gave away Luiz Gohara.
