Freeman, Kemp, Adams, Markakis... great middle of the lineup!! You don't see the Braves breaking that up by trading one of the quartet do you?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
They should trade for Votto to play second base!
Sorry for being a little bit sarcastic, I'm just playing with the Braves' faithful.
Adams is not going to keep hitting this way, Freeman probably can't play an average 3B, and Markakis is a league-average bat. Even putting aside the defense, it's more a solid than a really good middle of the order.

Speaking of Duda, how hard is it to re-sign someone after trading them away? How often does it happen?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Depends on the relationship between player and team, I suppose. Yankees did it last year with Chapman. But I'm not sure I see the Mets giving him multiple years.

2:42
Be honest Jeffrey. Did you expect this out of Arizona? What in the world is going on with the DBacks?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
I wish I had so I could show you how smart I am.

Who is someone the Cardinals could go get to hit in the middle of their lineup? JD? JAbreu?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
Ask me again if they get to .500.
Rocktober
2:44
Who won the Tulo trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Rockies. Obviously you can argue about him helping them to the postseason, but he looks to be out of gas and they took on a lot of salary (even after Reyes offset). Hoffman is a nice piece.

Do you like having two first names?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
It is occasionally problematic and comes with little upside, so no, I guess I don't.
2:47
Worst of all, I have a third first name (middle)!

Hi Jeff, I really enjoy the live chat.  Do you think the Orioles will sell at the trade deadline or will they wait until the offseason?  Is there any value with Seth Smith or W. Castillo?  What would you do if you were the GM?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Thanks!
2:48
That's the trouble ... unless you deal your true studs, then is it even worth punting the season? How much are you really going to get for those players? Probably not a whole lot. So unless they either market Machado now, why bother?
2:49
Even if they think they'll deal him this winter, may as well make one last run unless it's totally hopeless.
And I say this as someone who isn't bullish on their chances this year.

Are the Tigers looking at a playoff drought for the forseeable future considering how much sunk payroll they have? Verlander, Miggy, Zim etc.
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
Probably, yeah.
Not a lot of top-level talent and underperforming veterans with big contracts. Not a good combo.

2:51
If Atlanta had to part with one to get the ball rolling, whom should they trade? Swanson or albies?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
I just can't see why that would really help get the ball rolling. More likely, it'd mean a premature effort to win now that wouldn't pay off in the near term and could harm the long-term efforts. Don't see it happening unless they fall out of love with one of them.
They did sorta pump up Mallex Smith as a prospect and then dealt him for what they saw as better value, so who knows.
Andrew Friedman
2:53
Is there anyone out there with a sub-4.00 ERA who I could get at the deadline?  Gray, Verlander, Quintana, etc. all over 4.00.
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
You really think he's fixated on current-season ERA, though, in evaluating possible targets?
He's not. I'm also not fully convinced they'll target a starter.
Cookie Monster
2:54
It was mentioned on MLBtraderumors.com (no subscription required) that the Giants could be shopping Belt! What could they get in return for him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
That was a pretty loose report. Hopefully I conveyed that with how I wrote it up.
2:55
Obviously the fact that he's not hitting at the levels he did the last two years hurts his value. I think he's a quality hitter still, of course -- he's a BABIP victim -- but the deal isnt so cheap that he's going to be a huge target. Plus, how many teams are really dying to lock into a first baseman for years to come?
2:56
@NYPost_Mets
now
Neil Walker will take BP on the field today for the first time since tearing his hammy. But still not ready to begin running.
Even if Walker can't make it back by the deadline, he'd be a possible August trade candidate.

Hey Jeff, love the chats. My absolute dream job is to be in an MLB front office, but obviously it is a dream for a reason. Is there a way for me to dip my toe into the industry to see what it's like, without giving up my day job?
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
Unless you have really interesting credentials or a connection, the way in is to work really hard for peanuts to get started. So, probably not unless you find a creative way.

I think the cards need bullpen help more than hitting. They've been able to take leads but come the 7th/8th someone has given it up. Agree/Disagree?
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
If they are in position to buy, they'll surely look at both. Most contending teams that have anything shy of a lock-down 1-7 pen end up adding some kind of relief arm.

What long term assets was i referring to earlier.  Is there a specific pitcher i am targeting?
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
He's just saying it's possible. I am sure they have some guys they like who they will look into. But I'd be surprised if they really targeted a particular player and decided to do whatever is needed to get him.
