Still see them going after bats at first base despite adding another option to the system. And pitching still has to be under consideration, both rotation and pen, but I'd expect more opportunism with an eye on the future than targeting big rental additions.

Just hard for me to see them taking on a bunch of salary for a guy who's kind of risky. (What if his speed lags?) And it'll be even harder to find good pitching without giving up whatever it is of value they have on the farm.

That depends upon the quality o the farm, of course, but generally I don't expect either to bring much back. Phillips is himself, but with a higher BABIP. He is quite cheap. But I think other players will be in higher demand among utility IF types. Garcia is pretty expensive and really hasn't been great. Back-end filler for a contender.

Phils have every reason to give him a good chance at some point, but I also don't think they are planning around him as a foundational piece.

Couldn't get the value you'd want given the recent injury. And they have good reason to look into an extension.

That said, there is some  "oh crap we are overpaying a lot of veterans" risk for SFG. They have a lot on the books. No truly monster contracts, but it's a drain to have so many big deals that aren't really working out. Makes it tough to go drop a huge salary on MadBum.
Who knows, though, maybe they get him for cheaper after this episode.
