I've seen people say things like, "yeah well there's risk in all contracts." True. But you never have this kind of situation where you take a guy for a few months and then stare down the possibility of being hung with eighty million dollars (or whatever it is) for an underperforming asset. B/c the only way he doesn't opt out is if something goes very, very wrong.

Carson Kelly should be used as a trade chip right? High end catching prospect blocked by Yadi.
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
No, I'd keep him. Yadie hasn't hit this year. He has immense wear and tear. He's not young.

Arodys Vizcaino would net a "greater" return than David Phelps, right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Ehhh ... Atlanta would probably hold out for more. Not sure if they'd get it. He probably has a higher ceiling, definitely seems to have a lower floor and real injury risk. Added year of control.

Any chance Cobb gets traded to get a rental package of rh bat/ Lefty reliever?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
I just don't see how they can bump him from the rotation to address other needs in this spot. I get the whole concept of selling pending free agents while still trying to put a contending roster out there, but it's tough to see a path that really makes sense in this case, even with their general rotation depth.

Do the Giants likely expect anything really back for Samardzija?  Is something like him and $12M to Seattle for DeJong (so not much) realistic?   See any other decent to good starters that teams may want to dump salary on and not take back much in the way of prospects?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Thing is, I don't expect SFG to want to just dump his salary. Not like the rotation is loaded up without him.

Is Jed Lowrie involved in these Sonny Gray trade talks that are heating up with Houston?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
I don't see a reason for that. Astros have lots of infield options, including guys like Moran at Triple-A.
They don't need to do anything to make up for Correa.

Are the Nat's done?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
They are 20 games over .500 despite losing two of their best players for lengthy stretches. One of those (Turner) is coming back.
Am I missing something?

Does Cozart bring in a top 100 prospect?

No

Will the pirates move Andrew McCutchen? If so, are the dodgers the only viable trade partner

David Freese to Bos?
Jeffrey Todd

Nunez & Lowrie seem better fits and more available.

I just saw a list of 10 possible prospects who could be taken in the Rule 5 draft from the Yankees. Most of these guys would be top 5-8 guys in any system. With that in mind do you think Casman will make one or two more block buster trades?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
I don't have any specific thoughts on the Yankees, BUT did want to note that these kinds of considerations can underlie/drive trade talks. Could also look at the Brewers, who have all these OF prospects -- many of whom will need or already have 40-man spots -- and surely some other orgs that may be willing to deal certain guys for internal reasons that go beyond talent evaluation.

Why are Cubs looking at Alex Avila?  Would he replace Contreras who's been batting well lately?
Jeffrey Todd

Perfect platoon pairing.

What does a Josh Harrison to Boston trade look like?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
Well, you'd be asking the Pirates to give up a key player just  as they are beginning to make a run into postseason relevance. So, it looks unlikely. And the asking price would probably be sorta comical at this stage.

Are PTBNL trades ever conditional? Like the teams have agreed to complete the swap for a certain prospect based on how many games the main player traded stays off the DL (or other condition)?
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Yes. The Rays' acquisition of Jesse Crain is an example.
But that's a guy who was injured at the time of the deal.
2:54
I do wonder if there'd need to be some creativity along these general lines to work out a deal for Cueto or Upton.

With the Nationals 9th inning drama still continuing (Even Doolittle had a little bit of trouble getting the save), who can the Nationals realistically actually acquire who would be a guaranteed closer (essentially who does not blow any saves in the postseason)
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
I don't know. Rajai Davis hit a home run off Aroldis Chapman in game 7. There's no sure thing in baseball.
You just get the best guys you reasonably can and hope for the best.

What could Felipe Rivero net the Pirates were he available?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
He's almost certainly one of the 5 most valuable relievers in baseball. (He'll only be a Super Two next year.) So, it'd be quite a lot.

When in the world will these guys put Jays fans out of their misery and finally make a freakin trade already!!!
Jeffrey Todd

What an ironic name for a Jays fan!
