Will the Real Judge Plz Stand Up
2:29
What do you expect Judges line to be next year? Tale of two halves
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
As always, you aim for the middle when looking for expectations.
Zach
2:30
Phillies infield opening day?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
That is pure guesswork at this point. Lots of possibilities. Could let someone else roll the dice on Franco, though I don't think they'll just dump him without getting value. Could shop Galvis and Hernandez, with Crawford ready to go, though demand is looking weak. I tend to expect Hoskins to get first, which could mean Joseph is more or less dumped for whatever they can get.

Hey Jeff. With the Phillies in desperate need of pitching, who should they go after? Lance Lynn or Alex Cobb in free agency, or Gerrit Cole or maybe Chris Archer? They have the prospects to get a trade done. Not looking forward to another "Hellickson" type pitcher coming in
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
The good thing about Hellickson was that he didn't require a lengthy commitment. Neither Lynn nor Cobb have terribly exciting peripherals, and are likely better suited to a team that is ready to win and just needs those solid innings. Cole doesn't have enough control left to justify the price for Philly. Archer would be great, but every other team in baseball feels the same way.
2:34
They are willing to spend near-term money to take a risk on a veteran, but have rightly avoided the long-term deals. And I don't think that should change unless it's a youthful, impactful player. I do think the Phils will be pretty aggressive in looking into the trade market -- same kind of deal we've loooong heard rumored re the Braves.
2:35
Regardless, it's probably reasonable to expect they will at least look at some bounceback types (Brett Anderson, old friend Clay Buchholz, etc)

Markakis has no value, I think youre wrong there
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
If I was unclear, let me be clear about what I was saying. (Not sure exactly what you are saying.)
2:37
I think Markakis is still a MLB outfielder and would draw interest. But I don't think he's really quite worth $11MM for a single season. It's fairly close, though. He's respected, of course, and would be a really good platoon/4th OF type.
2:40
Quick timeout here, sorry.
2:42
Okay I'm back, apologies.
Dick Williams
2:42
I have been quoted saying I might go after a youngish #2, #3 starter to build behind Castillo. Could Scooter and Duvall be paired with a young arm to get what we need? Who would it possibly be?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
I don't think a team is going to squint past the limitations of those players and take a volume deal for a player as rare as a controllable, established #2/3 starter. It is just not the kind of deal that we see.
2:44
Those are useful players with plenty of value, to be clear. Just don't see them adding up to what you're describing -- what I take to be a starter on the order of Michael Fulmer (or perhaps a tick below his ability level).

2:44
How concerned should the Reds be about Hamilton's development so far?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
He kind of is what he is, right? I mean, he's a phenom on the bases and in the field but he really isn't all that likely ever to hit much.
2:46
In some ways, it can be better to have a more extreme player, b/c he can be paired with a platoon mate so as to open the door to better matchups. Maybe they can take advantage of that.

Why don't the Mets wake up and realize David Wright is DONE and move on?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
If they just release him, will they be able to receive insurance benefits? There's more to this than the Mets desperately hoping he can make it back. They'll plan accordingly.

2:48
Does Andrew Cashner break the bank in free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Not really, but I guess it depends on your definition. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/09/free-agent-stock-watch-andrew-c...

2:49
Do you have an 2nd AL wild card pick?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
Unless one team stands out -- not the case here -- I tend to go with whoever is in front right now.
2:50
So, I guess I'm taking the Twins. 2-game lead is legit separating factor here.

Any thoughts on sports as a conveyance for political activism (i.e. Fenway last night?)
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
You are just begging for me to say something that ends up in me being fired! Ha. I'm happy to discuss this in other settings, but I don't think I could enunciate any kind of nuanced position here.
Generally, though, I guess a baseball game is as good/bad/in-between a public setting for activism as any other.
2:54
(Well, not exactly a public setting, but you know what I mean.)

Rhys Lightning needs ACDC's thunderstruck for when he comes up.
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
Rhys Lightning is excellent. Full endorsement.
And I surely won't complain at Thunderstruck.

2:55
Hey Jeff, thanks for the chat. If you are a fan of someone like Atlanta, would you rather see them winning meaningless games or trying to "tank" for 4th/5th player in the draft?
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
The Mariners won on the last game of the season in 2015, giving them the 11th pick. They'd have given up the ability to take Kyle Lewis (it turned out) had they signed a QO free agent. The Rockies gave up #11 overall last year to sign Ian Desmond. Those are huge tradeoffs, but ones that the new QO rules largely do away with. Now, we're talking about minor differences. Obviously, it's always nice to move up for bigger pool money and preference in choice, but it's probably not important enough to interfere with the operation of the team or anything.

Upton stays?
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
Close, but I lean toward opt out.

2:59
Jeffrey, what could the Blue Jays get for Marcus Stroman in a trade, in the off season.
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Well, we have already touched upon teams like the Reds, Phillies, and Braves having interest in exactly this type of pitcher. Loads of teams with better rosters and/or more resources would also be in on him. So ... quite a bit.

What's the trade market for 1B going to look like this offseason? Bour? Belt?
