That may be on the high side, but I see him as a nine-figure guy. I still think the market will make exceptions for premium players and he has been that with the bat. It will be interesting to see, though.
2:58
Remember, too, that the market generally doesn't work as smoothly as we might think in theory. No closers got anything close to Papelbon money for years and years; everyone thought that meant the death of big relief contracts.
3:00
Nope -- just weren't pitchers of that caliber, etc. The one-year perceived dive in slugger prices represents an acknowledgement that dinger totals need to be referenced against a new mean, and that does represent a change. But a guy who just produces huge offensive value against league average is just as rare and valuable as ever.

Is Rhys Hoskins for real?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Probably, yeah.
3:01
This doesn't look like your average fun but unsustainable rookie run.
Wonder if Phils will make a run at extending him.

Should MLB extend the fences or should my parents have payed better attention?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
This is what's wrong with discussions like this. That is not an appropriate either/or question.
Of course, if you're sitting there you should pay attention. (It was her grandparents, fyi.) Perhaps they were. Perhaps they tried and failed to protect her.
3:03
Doesn't mean that this age of 120 mph batted balls doesn't require better protection for fans.
3:04
(Not trying to say this particular questioner has bad intentions in framing the question ... but I have seen it generally posed this way elsewhere.)

does 4 years 70 million get lance Lynn or alex cobb? both seem about the same earning potential wise this off season
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
I'm taking the under on both.

I have felt for a long time the Twins will make a significant move this winter for a pitcher? do you agree and if so what are some potential targets?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
You should ask this of Steve, since he's the chief Twins watcher at MLBTR. But ... I don't know that I see them pursuing a deal for one of the guys I mentioned above as conceivable but difficult trade targets. Would mean giving up too much young MLB talent.
3:07
As for free agents, man, I don't know. Well-calibrated signings can work. Heck, Ervin Santana has. And they were willing to go get Castro. So it's possible. But I guess I wouldn't expect "significant" to mean a guy that most would view as a really high-caliber pitcher.
We also don't really have a lot of info to go off of on how the new FO duo will operate.

So who are some of the players the Brewers should start extending and do they reunite with Lucroy,  also what is done with Thames?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
Not sure they really need to go pushing for extensions. Could see them looking for bargains with a few guys, though, as they did last winter with Villar.
3:10
Could also imagine the Brewers looking to get creative with some pitchers. Maybe give Knebel a guarantee and try to gain some cost control? Even Jimmy Nelson -- we have seen some injured pitchers sign extensions. In his case, maybe some kind of arb-only deal ... though I'm not sure if there's really a structure that would work for both sides.
3:11
(Re Nelson, I'm just spitballing ... think of Ottavino's deal. In this case, team could look to get a cheap FA year option and lower-than-expected arb salaries in exchange for giving him risk protection now that he's in a  tough spot.)
Chisox
3:11
Tim Anderson has been better of late but his OBP has been around .270 all season and he leads the league in errors. Was his extension premature, do the White Sox need a SS?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
They need to just let him play, but from my perspective it seemed a bit unnecessary (albeit also fairly low-risk) when signed.
3:13
I mean, they made out like bandits with Eaton and Quintana and Sale, so it's tempting to follow that approach. And really, it's probably still worth it given how  cheap it was. There's just so little risk for teams.
... with those cheap, early-career extensions, I mean.

Hey Jeff, i was wondering how you dealt with all the tuition and time etc into becoming a lawyer, only to find out it wasn't for you. I'm almost at the same crossroads and I don't know anyone in the same situation.
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Oh man, I wish you luck! Fortunately, I was in a good spot b/c I was pretty smart with the dollars and cents all along. Left me flexible to pursue the direction that I felt was best for me and my family. That's my real advice: always be looking into the future and never assume you know how you'll feel and how things will go.
3:15
*smart and fortunate with the dollars and cents
I was young. Ended up making pretty wise financial decisions but many were made without the most forethought.
(You all realize this is just a White Sox analogy, right?)
3:16
Okay couple more real quick and I have to run here ....

3:16
Should the orioles get rotation help,or look in-house for help?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
If they want to contend they have to add at least a few outside guys.
Chris
3:17
Has Ellsbury rebuilt himself into a $10-11m/year player for the Yanks to be able to move him as such?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Maybe on a one-year deal. But he's probably not a 4/$40MM guy, say, at his age and given his recent track record.
3:18
At some point, though, they may just take what they can get if they decide they dont' want him on the roster.

Can the nickname Boog only be applied to a player with the last name Powell or can we expect Boog Quinones soon?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Only one way to find out. I hereby dare everyone in this chat to begin referring to him or herself as "Boog."

Are they better off with keeping Tanaka or bringing in Otani?
