Who should the Mets go after this offseason? They need a 3B, SP, RP, with limited payroll.
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
In that situation, you either need to be patient in search of value or go after lower-salary guys you really want. Could attempt either.
2:28
Like, maybe they really want Eduardo Nunez to add another versatile IF option, so they push hard for him with a longer-term offer at a slightly lower AAV.
Or maybe they sit back and hope that a guy like Todd Frazier is available for little, or even that a trade target (Chase Headley, Yangervis Solarte, etc) is being given away.
2:29
Re the pitching, same idea, but I dont expect they'll promise any rotation spots to free agents. Maybe pursue a swingman type?
Melchez
2:30
Do you see expansion any time soon?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
I think they'll be pretty cautious. Don't see it at all before resolution of OAK and TB ballparks. Might be a 10-year type of strategic consideration, but I'd be surprised if it's within the next 5 or so years.

2:31
In your mind, who is the front runner for the Tiger Manager job?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
This is a good time for me to issue a statement on managers: I have no idea. And I think that most who claim to have an idea really don't.

2:32
Hi Jeff. Long time Dodger fan. Remember going to Ebbets field as a kid. What do you think the Bums will do in the off season to improve?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Whoa! Nice. If I could travel in time, I'd be right there with you.
2:33
I have a tough time really guessing at this point with the Dodgers. They have so much talent and so many possibilities. That includes considerations like relying on  Verdugo and Buehler. Evaluations of the health of various starters. Even how the postseason shakes out.
2:34
Certainly possible to imagine pursuit of an outfielder, trading away Puig, etc ... or adding a slugger at first while bumping Bellinger to OF. Just too many possibilities to really pick a target area at this stage.

What could the Reds get it they decided to market Schebler? A decent starter?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
As in a solid, cheap, controllable starter? Not seeing it. Schebler has loads of power but carried a .307 OBP this year. They should probably just keep him and let it all play out with him and Winker and the other options, for the time being.
Don't always need to rush into resolving apparent playing time roadblocks. Injuries, declines, etc can happen. And it's not like you can't rotate around OFers and get lots of value from four heavily-used guys.

Chris Archer for Domingo Santana? Both teams have good options to replace player traded.
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
Archer is worth more than that. But Domingo is a legit asset, too.
Braves
2:39
Any guesses as to who our next GM will be? Word is the John's are not currently on very good terms. Maybe this means that we can get another new age guy in instead of Moore.
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
I have no idea. But I'm curious if the corporate overlords will at some point just sort of clean house in the upper levels of the baseball side and start fresh. Bring in something analogous to the MacPhail/Klentak combo. (This is utter speculation; I have no inside info here whatsoever.)
Bobby Evans
2:40
What do the Giants need the most, power, of defense or speed?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Can't look at it that way. They need quality players at affordable prices.
2:41
They have lots of money on the books and have a ton of ground to make up. The full rebound can be done -- see Red Sox -- but isn't going to be easy.
2:42
On that... the idea I've seen floated of dumping Brandon Belt and spending big to replace him  seems utterly counterproductive to me.
Belt isn't super cheap. Concussions are worrisome. But he isn't FA expensive and has been an excellent offensive producer. I'd focus my energy elsewhere.
Frederick Freeman
2:43
With the Braves in need of a 3b, how about making a deal for Matt chapman of the A's? I like an offer of Folty and Sean Newcomb.
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
That's not an unfair offer -- I dont know that either pitcher is going to really turn out, but both are valuable -- but I'm not sure it suits the A's needs. They have young, MLB-level starters of that type. There's no real replacement for what Chapman could be -- a top-shelf defender who's a solid hitter and high-quality everyday guy for the next 6 seasons.
reds guy
2:44
do the reds sign Otani?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Probably not.
Same answer for every other team.
It kind of makes me laugh when I see people just casually suggesting their team should get Otani. (Not that this question qualifies as that -- referring to other things I've seen.)
2:46
I mean, yeah! He's going to cost nothing. Even if you have to sort of work out an expected extension in advance, it would be relatively team friendly for a hyper talented young guy and wouldn't be formal until he has shown he's worth it, presumably.
Braves FO mess
2:46
This seems to be a brewing tempest that can badly affect the Braves rebuild schedule. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Not sure about what impact it would really have. If there's a big change in direction -- say, a full house-cleaning takes place -- then a new evaluator might want to spend some time taking a close look. And might have different opinions on the young guys. But the talent that's there still is what it is. And still isn't ready in 2018, in my best estimation.
2:49
One thing that does seem to have changed regardless of what else goes down: less likely the club goes out and spends a significant amt via free agency this winter.

RE: the super pen thing with the yankees.

Cleveland also has a super pen too. And better SP. so....
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
Yes, that too. And so many teams have good pens. Many of those still left. In no small part b/c they foresaw they'd be in the postseason and made deals to get the relievers.
2:50
Even those that don't have as many exciting relievers may bump starters into such roles.
Of course, those with somewhat less-good pens still made it this far for a reason. They probably have deeper lineups and better starters.
2:51
Top to bottom, this group of 8 is really good. I was looking at it this morning -- they have collectively played .600+ ball since the trade deadline.
