I see the Nats being opportunistic, looking to add a big piece with some flexibility as to where that goes. Most likely rotation, catcher, OF.

Why haven't you answered any of my questions yet????? It's in the beginning of the chat, you don't have the excuse that there are thousands of questions yet....
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
And yet I just noticed this comment ... which you submitted 25 minutes ago. There really are a lot, I promise.
Hey jeff

I just sneezed all over my iPad. :/

What kind of value do you see someone like Jeff Samardzija or Matt Moore having?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
I wouldn't really view either as having much surplus, but they are generally worth their contracts. I realize the results last year wouldn't suggest that, but that's the price of pitching that has excellent peripherals (Shark) or a solid history and youth (Moore).

2:39
Any way you see Heyward being moved?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Not really. What org is going to be able to take enough of it on that it makes sense for the Cubs to just dump a piece of it to get rid of the player? Esp when they originally evaluated him and believed the talent was there (with Epstein suggesting recently they still think he can rediscover the bat somewhat).
2:41
Difference between Heyward and Shark/Melancon -- remember that rumor? never seemed credible -- is that the pitchers haven't dug as big a hole in terms of expectations and don't carry nearly as big a financial hit.

Which free agent, if any, will regret not accepting a qualifying offer?

Do I really have to give Harper 500m to stay...
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
If he had strung together three consecutive 2015-caliber seasons, maybe. But he hasn't. Seems steep.
2:44
That said, we also don't really know what Harper is thinking. Not like he isn't already rich or like he isn't going to earn hundreds of millions ... maybe he really wouldn't have interest in an extension at all, preferring to choose where he plays. Or maybe he's really comfy in DC and would be willing to take a huge but still largely reasonable value. We don't really know for sure. Strasburg shows it's possible.
Joel
2:45
Do you see a Javy Baez for Marcus Stroman baseline for a trade as realistic?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
I don't think the Jays would do that. Much easier to find solid middle infielders for a reasonable price.
Ed
2:46
Why don't you think the Mets will make an attempt or actually sign someone like Chatwood?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
They have to pick their battles with the roster and resources they are working from. Getting a guy like Chatty will also mean promising him a rotation spot.
Michael
2:48
Would the Marlins trade a guy like Justin Bour or JT Realmuto
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
I think they will ultimately consider those guys and others but want to get started with Stanton. There's certainly logic to that approach.
2:49
Bour probably won't draw enough in return to make it worth it -- he's a slugger with a gregarious personality who's also dirt cheap. Helps draw the sting of trading Giancarlo.
Realmuto is their best asset in many ways. Any other established, quality young catchers available? Nope.
2:50
Most likely guy they just have to bite the bullet on is Ozuna. Only two years of control left.

2:50
Any chance Justin Upton looks like a relative bargain in a couple of years?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
It's not super likely that the rest of the deal will look great once we're halfway through it. But it could look okay from a forward-looking perspective and could look like a big win when you include what he has already contributed.
Consider, for example, the Scherzer contract. He has been worth far more than his salary. And he was in like the top 30 on Dave Cameron's trade value ranking b/c we know he'd probably get a much larger commitment vs what's left on his deal were he to go to free agency right now.

Why haven't you accomplished anything meaningful in life?
Jeffrey Todd

Harsh but true. Except my kids, I guess, they are pretty awesome.
I always like to be realistic.

How do you decide which question to answer. And how do you keep track of the good ones and get rid of the bad ones.

Scroll, read, react ... I'm like a middle linebacker.

I keep seeing the same thing in reporting in me this winter - I am a "below average" 2nd baseman. By what metric am I considered below average - it cant be an offensive metric so it must be defensively but I doubt I am "below average"
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Not sure who says that but it wouldn't be me. He's a solid everyday guy at this point. I don't think he's really worth more than his contract, though.
2:55
Dee is owed now approximately what the Nationals committed to sign Daniel Murphy as a free agent. Now, this was before Murphy turned into a golden god at the plate, but ... before that, he was a quality hitter and grin-and-bear-it defender. Gordon is sort of the opposite of that, with his speed and D making up for a so-so bat.

Okay now you've taken it too far mom. Not bringing the kids home for Christmas!!!

Juan Lagares is working with the hitting coach who changed JDM's swing mechanics in hopes of improving his hitting.  If it works and he turns into a .275/.330/.440 type hitter wouldn't that make him a really above average Center Fielder considering his elite defense already?  He does so much to help the team in center field that a .275 avg with league average power (doubles, triples, homers) would be a huge development for the Mets, no?
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
Yes, I read that. But ... why doesn't every player in baseball just go hire that dude and turn into the next JDM/Justin Turner/Daniel Murphy/Chris Taylor? MLB hitting is all about adjusting and unlocking talent, but not everyone can do it.
Maybe Lagares can, I dont know. He has been a useful hitter before. Glove gives him a floor. Like I said, though ... risky.
