does getting Marcus stroman make sense without giving up albies and acuna
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
For the Braves, sure, but I don't see a deal happening at all, least of all without giving up a really high-end young player.

What does a possible sale of the blue jays mean to their offseason plans? Spend money to field a contender and keep the value of the franchise high? Or save money because of uncertainty of ownership?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
As I wrote in the post, my general expectation would be a continuation. It's not even certain there will be a sale. Org seems to be in good standing from a financial perspective and I'm sure Rogers feels it has a good biz plan in place, so I don't see why they'd waver now.
Pads fan

The relief market seems to be oversaturated. Can the Pads still get back a haul for Brad Hand?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
As noted above, Minor signing as a starter helps lefties -- or teams that have them. Hand has established himself as a premium pen arm, so I don't think that the volume of next-tier pitchers will impact his market.

A Wednesday afternoon chat?!?! What is this sourcery?!?!

OH NO

I thought it was Thursday. Ha.
Dang it all.
Oh well ... you'll get a double dose when Jason comes on tonight.
Interesting ...

This can obviously change as it goes, but Giants expect a Stanton decision by the end of the week. I'm hearing they continue to view Dodgers, not Cardinals, as biggest threat.

No team is desperate enough to take a chance on Palmeiro... right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
That is truly one of the strangest stories I can recall. You know how you sometimes think to yourself, "well, crazier things have happened"? In terms of baseball players, this is like Tebow cubed.
2:34
Would be great though if it opened the floodgates on 1990s favorites. "Jeff Treadway Signs With Marlins"

"Mark McLemore Inks 3-Year Pact With White Sox"

I know he's old and doesn't throw hard, but is there any reason Dan Otero had to settle for 2/$3M? I would've expected him to get ten times that next year...
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Ten times? Nah. But the Indians have capitalized on guys that like pitching in Cleveland and want financial security. Did the same with Tomlin. Loads of wise extensions from that front office.

Is Aledmys Diaz start for the jays or triple A or bench role
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
I expect he'll take the utility role on the MLB roster. he obviously has had success there before and probably doesn't have much to prove or gain from time at Triple-A. He doesn't cost anything, so they could still look into others, but this is probably the move.

Ohtani will have no trade protection with whomever he chooses.  What is to keep his chosen team from flipping him for a ton of major or monor league talent.
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Obviously it would be shocking for any shenanigans to occur, but that is an interesting point if you look a year or two into the future. I'm assuming he can't negotiate a NTC but don't know for sure. Really, though, these teams are going to want to capitalize on having him for themselves. That can always change, but it's not a near-term consideration.
Marlins

Any word on Martin Prado seems like Stanton has taken over
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
I mean, I just don't see a ton of interest in Prado -- at least in the sense that teams will be chasing him. He's not the kind of guy you're going to be targeting at the outset of the market since the Marlins chief motivation is offloading salary and he's coming off such a down year. I expect he'll be someone that other teams check down to.
Aaron
2:42
With their other recent moves already in mind, if you're the Cardinals and Stanton falls through, who's your top alternative pursuit?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
JD Martinez is the obvious open-market guy, but indications are they aren't really looking at him. St. Louis reporters have been talking about continued talks with the Marlins on Yelich or Ozuna, both of whom would make sense.

Do I sign with the Mets this offseason
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Y'know, that situation is still confusing to me. I know Dom Smith was a disappointment in the majors but it was such a small sample, he performed in the minors, and they have hyped him for so long. Santana is a pure 1B option in the NL so there's just no flexibility there. Guess I'd be surprised despite the reported interest. I think a righty-hitting bat that can also play the outfield is an easier fit. Cuddyer-ish.

What do you think Lorenzo Cain's market ends up looking like?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Still think he's in a good spot for a big contract, perhaps in the $80MM vicinity, since he stands alone among center fielders. Just which teams will be in? Depends upon Stanton and Ohtani, which I think is one way they are directly impacting the FA market. (Even if, as Passan wrote recently, there are other factors at play there.)

Does Lucas Duda make sense for the nationals to fill Adam Linds job
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Still think Duda gets paid more than Lind, and now that Zimmerman is back in business I'm not sure they'll spend there. Nats' offseason remains a huge unknown.

Espn has the A's as the sleeper team for 2018. They have them ranked at 14 in their "way too early" rankings. What do you think?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
I like to approach things like this by asking, "how many things need to go right / not wrong?" In this case, "lots" is the answer. Never know, but that feels optimistic. They need the breakout young position players to continue upward trajectories, for guys like Semien and some pitchers to rebound, Lowrie to stay healthy, etc, etc.

Im a bit concerned by the Phillies lack of moves. I would think they would sign a pitcher to take pressure off Nola. What do you foresee?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
No reason at all to be concerned. Rangers are the only team that has really made multiple moves at this point. In terms of MLB contracts/trades, more than half the league has done nothing.
