You just wrote about DJ Herz coming off the IL and competing for a rotation spot next year. You may want to add Connelly Early to the list of "rotation locks," health permitting.

Lee is owed $63MM over the next three seasons, plus he can opt out after the 2027 campaign.  While an opt-out doesn't seem too likely at this point, it does further complicate trade talks.

Lee has thus far looked like an okay player at best at the plate, and a minus in the field (either in CF or RF).  The Giants will probably need to eat money to facilitate a deal.

Just because Kikuchi was mentioned in the same respect earlier in the chat, I wonder if the Giants and Angels could work out some kind of deal involving Lee for Kikuchi, with naturally more players or salaries involved.

What an odd year for Don Mattingly, whose work in turning the Phillies around will likely be rewarded with a pink slip unless Philly gets to (at least) the NLCS.  It does still seem like Cora is the manager-in-waiting, creating a weird dynamic to this Phillies' playoff run.

Martinez doesn't seem to want the daily grind of being on the road, let alone the added responsibilities of being a manager

This is the most PA Trout has had in a season since 2016, so it's a nice win that he's been able to stay relatively healthy.  If he can continue to avoid any big or lingering injuries and his body re-adjusts to the 162-game grind, maybe Trout does indeed have one more MVP type of year remaining.....but Father Time's record is sterling for a reason

Posey has already said the Giants will make more of an effort towards bolstering the pen (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/09/posey-bullpen-will-be-offseason...), so that's one box that can hopefully be checked.  Adding starting pitching and catching help are also important, but the trickiest element for SF is counting on Chapman and Adames to hit like their old selves.

Trading Mike Burrows for Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery and Jake Mangum has to be the best trade of the year. Pirates trying to end the season well, 14 of L20 maybe finish above .500 on a Skenes down year. What should their plan be next season to get over the final hump?

Pittsburgh fans still upset about the Chris Archer trade are particularly overjoyed that the Bucs seemingly got one back on Tampa (and Houston).

Figuring out Skenes' issues is the most logical first step, since if Skenes had pitched like he did in 2024-25, the Pirates might be right in the middle of the wild card hunt.  Re-signing Lowe would be ideal and a sign that the Pirates are serious about spending what it takes to win, but Lowe figures to get a good deal of attention in a weak FA market.
Montgomery's emergence notwithstanding, the bullpen should still get some focus

Is it worth bringing Judge back for the playoffs?  Maybe that sounds ridiculous, but look at how he was hitting.  Adding that to the lineup is actually hurting, not helping.  Guy just hasn't seen MLB pitching in months, why would he not just be a strikeout machine?

For Bill Simmons fans, the Yankees winning a title without Judge would make the Ewing Theory hall of fame.

But, if Judge is at all healthy, he's obviously going to play.  Firstly, Judge would be irate if he isn't activated while healthy.  Secondly, in the likely event that Judge doesn't play and the Yankees get eliminated, the organization is roasted in the media forever.

Judge may indeed be a DH-only candidate depending on the state of his calf.  While this obviously isn't ideal, at least his bat is in the lineup.

Stephenson will certainly find at least a two-year deal in free agency, so the Reds won't be able to keep him on a one-year pact

Crawford would understandably want more than that (both money-wise and role-wise) in his next deal.  I noted in the post earlier that his market may be difficult, but he should be able to find a one-year deal with a team that will use him pretty much everyday

Stott's looked pretty decent at third base, so moving Turner to 2B and then pursuing a shortstop might well be Philly's latest infield shakeup.

Turner's defense is a strange case.  There has been talk for years that a position change could be in order, and the public metrics have him as a bad defender in three of the last four seasons....except 2025, when Turner was quietly one of the more solid defensive shortstops in baseball.  Since this was just a year ago, maybe the Phillies stick with Turner at shortstop to see if another rebound is possible, but the wiser move would be to make a change now
