I'm surprised the Phillies aren't mentioned as a more serious contender for Manny Machado. With the financial resources to offer him a record deal, why not get him in the building, show him the future outlook and then lock him up. Are you also surprised?

Not really. I mean ... how much is it really worth for the extension negotiation rights to a player? Is he going to be happy if they end up like 5 games under .500? Etc.

Take the Heyward example I mentioned above ... assume the Cards were rebuilding at the time. They lost him to FA (avoiding a terrible overpay in the process). And lost Shelby Miller, who turned into Swanson/Inciarte.
Never know but ... the one-year guy has less chances to turn into future value, I'd have to think, than whatever it is you give up.

You'd like to hope that if they can move the unwisely signed player who occupies like a third of their payroll they wouldn't do it just to take on a similar contract.
Possible at the right price but I don't think they'd run past multiple teams chasing Martinez.
