Hey everyone ... sorry to be getting a slow start today. Lost track of time and had to rush back from a run.
Yeah that's right ... 2.5 miles baby, I'm big time.
2:08
We'll let the chat room fill with knowledgeable and astute baseball observers and get going shortly ...

2:10
Chris Archer would look good in an Astros uni, right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Well he's a handsome young man ... he'd look good in just about any uni.
2:11
Also from a baseball perspective.
2:12
There's no single team that really stands out as making particular sense for Archer, to me. We also don't really know what the Rays would feel would be enough. Could be they'd only do it for a true cornerstone type piece at or near MLB level, plus some. So ... who do they like best? We don't know.
Rob
2:12
Hello think the Braves would get Yelich or Reomuto?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
No reason that ATL can't get something done. Certainly have the pieces. But when you are talking about 2 high-quality, young/controllable MLB pieces, now you're going to be in range of where most other orgs are willing to deal major assets.
2:14
So ... if the Nats offer Robles +, will Braves be willing to offer Acuna +? Nats can easily justify it b/c they have an open window right now and are getting back long-term pieces in the swap. Braves .... well, they can't put as high a value on the first year or two of control over JTR/Yeli.
Point being: Braves are plausible but on paper I'd expect a more win-now oriented team to come harder for that pair. (Odds are, of course, they'll be moved separately.)

Think the Red Sox will go past 5 years for JDM?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
Not convinced they will have to. I'm not sure where the other market competition would really come from. Obv other teams would be glad to give big money to sign him, but is there another team that'll meet or exceed whatever Boston is dangling at 5 years?
Chris
2:16
do you think the Phillies get any of the following pitchers: Stroman, Archer, Lynn, Cobb
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
I mean, if I had to take a side of Stro/Arch/LL/Cobb vs "none of the above", I'd take the latter.
But it's possible to imagine a path to all of those. (Even Stroman, I guess, though that's least likely.)
2:17
I would say it's more likely than not the Phillies enter the '18 season with a new pitcher that most of us would consider a #3ish or better type of starter.

When will all the FA starters lower their asking prices??
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Once it starts feeling like there may not be any chairs left. For now though I don't see much reason why any particular player/agent would need to feel like the market situation has changed. So long as they hold the line and treat it like a normal winter, it'll be a test of wills, as usual.
The pressures, btw, go in both directions. Plenty of fans are already annoyed at their teams for supposedly sitting on their hands. Owners want to win and are also thinking about generating interest to sell tickets and such.
2:20
I'm not ready to say yet whether this market is going to turn out favorably or unfavorably to players, generally.

With the Brewers reported interest in Lorenzo Cain, does that mean Brinson could be on the move for Archer or another ace?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Realistically, the Brewers had something of an OF glut already. So signing Cain would surely set them up for a trade. Whether it'd be Brinson or one of the others, I don't know. Predicting the Brewers or anyone else to land Archer would be foolhardy, but they likely have the pieces to get it done if they really want.

2:22
Wouldn't the Yankees be better off letting me start and sign a mid to top reliever for 8mil/year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
Ehhhh ... it's tough when you have a guy find real success in a certain role. And it's not like he was ever seen as surefire SP prospect or anything. He also found success by mostly becoming a 2-pitch guy, so you wonder what'll happen when you go back.
Shades of Wade Davis?

Thoughts on Padres reportedly offering Perdomo and Hand in a deal involving Javier Baez?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
I have not seen that from any reputable source, so I wouldn't believe it. I'd also find that a bit difficult to believe. I mean ... I guess it really depends how you feel about Perdomo. If you think he's even a 4 type SP then he's a pretty danged valuable asset with his age/control rights.
The Moose is Loose?
2:26
Moose on the South Side of Chicago?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
Had not really thought about that but I can see some sense to the idea. They could conceivably bail him out if the AAV came down and they see a value opportunity.
Trog
2:27
If you were a Marlins fan, would you feel betrayed, especially in light of the leaks that owners have a plan to line their pockets while putting a substandard product on the field?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
Not sure the leaked info showed a particularly nefarious scheme ... they were pitching investors and trying to show a path to profitability. Any business that isn't subsidized needs to be profitable at some point to survive.
2:29
Fact is, the preexisting roster was only going to be competitive if they added multiple new pieces. That would either cost what's left on the farm or lots more money. It didn't make sense to keep spending.
The problem wasn't so much the Stanton contract, but the whiffs on Chen, Volquez, Prado, the relievers.
2:30
Heck they tried to spend to put in the complementary pieces. It just didn't work. New ownership is generally going about things the right way, I think,  just ... man have they botched the PR for no real reason. They should be explaining this as part of the vision. Maybe they still will at some point.
Mike Moustakas
2:30
Is my timing/luck too rotten to get a decent contract this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Unless you mean timing and luck at the plate, leading to a miserly OBP, then I wouldn't ascribe any contractual disappointments to the market situation.
Moose has his attributes, but also quite a few limitations. He'll still get paid well, so I wouldn't worry about him.

Bristol CT here want some of this snow?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Actually I am kind of bummed we didn't have snow to go with the cold down here in VA ... anxious to start teaching my little boy how to ski on a little hill nearby!
