But I understand the feeling you are expressing here ... spent 3 years in Boston and 3.5 in Denver.

What can the Cardinals realistically do this offseason to be within striking distance of the Cubs?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
It isn't inconceivable to me at all that they'll contend in the division. Ozuna was a solid get. They don't strictly speaking need to do anything else, but still seems there's plenty of possibilities out there.
2:35
Both those orgs have some questions in their pitching staffs, esp w/r/t durability. I feel like that increases the uncertainty a bit.
2:36
Guess I shouldn't just say durability ... let's say there are a combination of factors that point to some uncertainty. Lester's age ... Wacha's health ... etc etc.

Could Brad Hand get me Bukauskas from the Astros?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
I never like to deal in specifics too much when it comes to prospects, but I'd generally expect his value would exceed that of JBB.
Hand has been outstanding. He's a lefty and can throw multiple innings, and he has been a closer, thus increasing his versatility and expanding his market.
2:38
Still cheap, 2 years of control. Market hot for relievers, no comparable lefties available. So ... fair to say I've come around on him being a major trade piece at this point.

What’s a realistic ceiling for Homer Bailey? Would any contender be interested in taking on that contract at the break?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Guys come back. Look at, say, John Lackey. So I wouldn't put any limitations on what he can do. The velo is there.
2:40
Obviously the health history and lack of results since he has returned suggest cause for pessimism, but I wouldn't just assume he's done for. So ... sure, he could conceivably be a solid trade asset this summer.

2:40
Would it be beneficial to hold onto guys like Parker Bridwell and Mike Clevinger if they end up in AAA like they are projected?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
Oh absolutely. Optionable swingmen that have had some success in the majors? Odds of getting through a season without needing that arm on the MLB roster are approximately zero.

Why can't we just sign Moustakas already?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
You sure that's a wise move? Unless the payroll is expanding more than expected to accommodate, that'd mean shaving another salary and then bumping Cabrera off of third to make room. Not sure I see the wisdom here unless he falls in their laps.

Trade destinations for Dellin Betances? Control problems notwithstanding, a 4-time all-star should still have big value if Wade Davis got 3/52
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Every team in baseball would have some level of interest. Really a matter of what the Yankees would be looking to do if they decided to dangle him.
2:44
In theory I suppose Betances could be dealt to add a similarly priced, useful player to step in at third or second. But that also feels kind of underwhelming.
2:45
As usual, I am through about 3 minutes of questions here, ha. Going to try to catch up a bit in case anyone had follow-up points to my earlier responses.

What would it take for the Nats to get Realmuto?  Taylor, Fedde, Severino? If they added Soto could they get both Realmuto and Yelich?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Think it will take Robles to get both. For just JTR ... hard to say. That trio has value but isn't laden with upside. Then again, Realmuto is only a 3-year asset. I do think Nats would have to strongly consider that kind of move ... though it'd hurt the upper-level depth and would mean spending some $$$ in FA.

Do I return from my 2017 health issues and become a contributor or will the Tigers just cut bait with me?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Well, there's no reason for them to do anything but sit back and see what happens. Big Papi does prove it's possible. Never know, maybe it just ends with a decent run that makes everyone feel good, or maybe he's even traded and saves the team some money or garners a bit of prospect value?

2:48
Any thoughts on what the cards have planned for closer, any other upgrades?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
Seems still to be something where they are looking for the right opportunity. Multiple options that still make quite a lot of sense. No reason to get desperate and overpay Greg Holland at this point.

2:49
Should Boston make a move to fill the slot they had for Nunez this fall or go with Holt/Hernandez/Lin/Marrero?
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
I think they should make an addition, but this is one of those things where you can sort of hunt for value. Odds are, some player or another who you like is going to be available at a palatable price. Maybe it's even Nunez himself.
2:51
Since they hope it's only a temporary thing, they can take a bit of a risk and know they can always adjust at the deadline if they need more.
Giants fan
2:51
I keep hearing rumors about potential trades for decent outfielders. Who do you think the Giants end up with?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
Couple decent outfielders, probably.
Exciting, right? Ha.
2:52
I've heard what you have. Clearly, the Giants have priced out just about every conceivable player. They realistically need a guy up the middle and in one corner. At least. If the right opportunity comes along, then they can go longer term. Or they can do a rental. Just so many options.
2:53
Oh and looky here ...

They're not out on anybody, as far as I know. #SFGiants
2:54
It feels like more things should have changed by this point of the offseason, right? Even putting aside the # of FAs left, etc. But ... status quo in many situations. There's movement but it's behind the scenes.

Can you guys stop apologizing for being late and just stop being late?

Fair. Will try harder.

What do you see the Red Sox doing with JBJ if JD is signed?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
They can both fit in theory, but it seems likelier it'd set up a deal. That said, the idea that some seem to be peddling that JBJ is mostly just an extraneous piece is just madness. He's a highly valuable player.
