Sorry about that ... just lost my internet connection.
3:00
Was going to add ... JBJ comes with 3 years of control over a CF with a high glove/baserunning floor and at least one All-Star level overall season. What happens with him is more than an afterthought for Red Sox. They will have a good idea of what they'll do with him before doing anything that forces him out.

Denver misses you-50 and sunny today
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
I miss you too Denver!  Nothing like a sunny, crisp winter day there.

Does Tulo have any trade value at all? Torino then needs to move him and his contract.
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
His contract is a salary dump. But he's not value-less as a player. Just ... with the health history and fall-off at the plate, it's hard to know what to expect.

Would Utley make a nice bench addition for the NYY?
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
More likely a sort of a platoon guy who'd deepen things and work along with the younger guys or perhaps another addition at 2B. It's conceivable, sure ... of course, could say the same of a few other such veteran types.

Is your last name really Todd?
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
Mind-blowing, I know, but it is.

With the free agent market stagnating, what do you see as the next major domino to fall before the market moves again?
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
I'm not sure there is a single domino. Could imagine any number of moves - FA or trade - that could sort of kick things off. (Or, like Davis, could just happen even if everything else remains stalled.)

Would a Cervelli for Weiters make any sense?  2018 salary's are similar but Cervelli has a an additional year. Pirates get some salary relief in '19, Nats roll dice on Cervelli health but if healthy get a good metric defender/pitch framer.  I might guess Pirates would want something else to sweeten the deal.   Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
Seems like something that those two orgs could explore. Interesting thought. Wouldn't be the first preference of either team and I agree the Nats would probably have to chip something else in. But  these clubs lined up in an interesting deadline deal (Melancon/Rivero).

In the Cards considering signing Hosmer, how big of a liability is Matt Carpenter at 3b?   At 2b?   At 1b
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
I mean ... he didn't rate terribly at third. But he's now another year older and didn't play there last year. Generally, I just don't see why it'd be worth it to the Cards to shuffle so many pieces to make room for a big spend on Hosmer.

is hosmer one of the more polarizing players in recent memory?  can think of another guy that people either think is a star or completely overrated.   I hear debate about whether a player is good or not...  but hosmer debates range from a top 15 star to a slightly above average performer.     (my unprofessional opinion fwiw;  solid regular- but do not like his hitter profile in a corner.  still probably a top ten first basemen)
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
It's funny, isn't it? Because this isn't even an evil analytics type of thing ... just look at his offensive production over the years. This is more of a pure scouting, inside the clubhouse sort of debate. What's most interesting to me is that we just finished debating Jason Heyward ... who was supposedly a saber darling. It's all very confusing.
3:11
I mean, people were aghast that Heyward -- a highly respected player who was significantly younger than even Hoz is when he hit the market -- would get such a big/long contract since he didn't have much power at a power position. Ummmmmm
3:12
Anyhow, I have found myself nodding while reading Dave Cameron's take on it. As I recall, essentially, it's: "fine, let's ascribe some value b/c maybe metrics are whiffing on his glove and he's maybe a somewhat better hitter than he has typically shown and he's a legit leader ... still, this is not a franchise cornerstone type of player."

Why did we pick up Santana, neshek, etc with such a low chance of contention in 2018?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Money ... you can't take it with you.
3:16
There's some "every season is sacred"-ness here. And there are paths to some level of contention in '18. Not surprising at all to see somewhat lengthier commitments now after all the one-year spending they did last year. I added it up at some point, it was like 60mil + in '17 salary for Neshek, Kendrick, Hellickson, et al.
3:17
I'll try to go a little while longer, so long as there's no breaking news. (Trying for a reverse jinx there.)

How often do you guys block someone for whining?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
All the time. This counts as whining. YOU'RE GONE.
Just kidding. No time for that. Also it's probably deserved.

I have seen Darvish rated ahead of Arrieta everywhere.  Wouldn't you want want the warrior, bulldog type in Arrieta instead of a guy who got lit twice in the Series?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
I'd want the better pitcher, which I believe to be Darvish. Look closer at Arrieta's postseason work in '17. Wasn't very good, even if the ERA was palatable. And if you really want to put that  much stock in 2 outings for Yu, ya have to still consider the pitch tipping report.

Let's have some fun on this snowy day in the NE: who signs Harper and Machado next off-season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
I have no real idea. It sort of annoys me when people act like they do. Then again, I have to remind myself that it is really tempting to try to project this sort of thing. But it's been proven time and again that soooo much can change from one year to the next that projecting this sort of situation that far out is a fool's errand.
3:24
Look at the obvious team for these guys, the Yankees. People have been saying for years that Harper was certain to go there. Now, it seems very hard to imagine with Stanton and Judge in the corners. And they make greater sense for Machado.
But ... what if Stanton gets hurt and ends up making more sense as a DH? And the Yanks' young infielders turn into instant stars, such that it doesn't make sense to add Machado? Etc, etc.
3:25
Not trying to pan you for asking or anything, just ... I could make a strong argument for a number of teams and pass it off as my real opinion. But I see too many variables to have one.
Pick me

Haven’t the Reds given Billy Hamilton more than enough time to learn how to get on base. Shouldn’t they trade him to a team who really needs him, like the Giants?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
Well, we pretty much know what he is, right? And he's only controllable for two years. So ... sure, he makes sense to be moved if he fits better as a shorter-term asset on another roster. On the other hand, the Reds may feel that they would rather just keep him (still cheap, remember) if they can't get something worthwhile in return.

3:29
Does Gennett keep up his stats from 2017?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Another guy in a similar situation to BHam, though obviously not home grown. In both cases, you could argue that they ought to cash in the asset and also make room for other players. But it's still not clear there's enough interest to force a move.
3:30
I realize Scooter is on the upswing after a really nice season. But he was still unable to hit lefties at all and there just isn't a huge market for platoon second basemen. Both are limited players. Good assets but not the types that are going to be chased too heavily now that they are earning some cash and only have 2 years of control let.
