We won't hold you to it, throw out two teams for Harper and Machado?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Fine! Nats, Yankees
Jeffery hates mariners questions
3:31
Are the mariners set or does jerry make a move and if he does what?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
I don't, it's just that I don't want to answer that particular question, and that's the question I keep seeing w/r/t the M's. We all kinda know the situation here, right? Dipoto would like to add another starter and is thinking about it and we don't yet know just what they have in terms of resources. And they'll probably swing like 4 random trades as well.

3:33
What do you see as more plausible for the Rangers: paying for one of the top line pitchers or going after a CF like Cain?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
Suspect it's a value proposition. They have limited cash and don't want to deal away prospects. They can accept a somewhat imperfect OF and improve the rotation, or vice versa. Depends which one offers the better opportunity, I suppose.

3:34
Do you think the orioles will sign any of the top-tier starting pitchers?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
I don't.

3:34
Follow up to the Harper question...think Harper could hang in CF?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Yeah, and he has before. But for how long? He has a big frame. I wouldn't sign him assuming he can handle CF for a long time, probably.

Would Maybin or Revere make sense as corner OF in Toronto?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Get excited, Jays fans!
3:37
Basically, the answer here is the same as w/r/t the Rangers, right? They are looking still for a few things. If the right chance arises they could spend some cash, but I doubt they'll go wild. And odds are they're going to end up settling for a veteran swingman or a less-than-exciting utility infielder or a platoon OFer or something ... not fill all the needs with premium players. Not really sure Maybin or Revere stand out as options, given they have defensive-minded outfielders already, but ... who knows?

Am I overvalueing Cutch thinking he could get a lower top 100 prospect?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
I'd be surprised if he brought back more than that level of value ... so maybe that's the beginning of the sort of range he might command? Have to remember, once you get past each tier of prospect, there are more guys legitimately in it, and more room for particular scouts/teams to disagree. Plus there's a bias in favor of guys closer to the majors (who offer more certainty in terms of expectations and less wait for MLB productivity).
3:40
Point being ... from the value charts I've seen produced, you'd be better off thinking of value tiers. When you say top 100, really that might best be thought of as the ~60 to 150 sort of range?
Anyway I have wandered from the question at hand, ha.

Where am I headed? 2 years possible?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Dunno, but it's a combo of $$$ and opportunity. Strongly suspect it'll be a one-year deal with hopes of returning for a bigger payday next winter.

Which would be a better target for the Yankees next off season. Keuchel or Kershaw? I say Keuchel. He'll be cheaper and i believe he is younger?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Well, this isn't necessarily a fair comparison. If Kershaw makes it to the open market and no major red flags arise in the meantime, you are talking about a chance to get a historically good starter ... inner circle HOF type. Keuchel is really good but nowhere near that level.
3:44
Obviously you have to think through the alternatives if you are the Yanks. And Kershaw will cost an incredible amount (barring injury, etc) and will not be terribly youthful, so there's loads of risk. But it's the Yankees, man. If you have a chance to get The Dude, you have to at least try, right?

Please inform people that defensive metrics for a first baseman are flawed
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
May be, but how much value can a first baseman really add with the glove? And how much are you going to factor that in? I mean, I'd be open to seeing someone construct an argument for how valuable Hoz is at picking balls out of the dirt, or whatever. But I'd need to see it in full detail to consider believing it.

Let's think way out the box...Rizzo for Archer, and the Cubs go out and get a guy like Bour.  Am I nuts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
You're nuts

Do you think the Cardinals could swing a deal with Toronto trading Randal Grichuk and Brett Cecil for Roberto Osuna?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
That would be a very appealing trade for the Cardinals, I agree.
So no.
Cheesy Gordita Crunch
3:46
How much would the nats have to give up to get one year of Grandal, and would the return be prospects or major league ready guys considering how the dodgers are obvious, perennial contenders?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Really not trying to answer another Nats catching question, but this made me think of how much I enjoyed cheesy gordita crunches back in the day.
3:48
Nobody really knows what Dodgers would want or if they really want to move Grandal at all. They might just figure they're better off keeping the depth, esp since Barnes plays in the infield as well, and that they would rather not help out a NL competitor.

What are the padres going to do with all of their major league 2B/3B players (Solarte, Spangenburg, Headley, Asuaje, Villanueva, and maybe even Pirela)
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Mmmmm ... gonna have to drive to taco bell for the first time in like a decade. ...

It's hard to fathom they don't trade at least one. Headley is the obvious pick, but then again who really wants to pick up a lot of that contract? Maybe they plug him at third and try to get something better back for Solarte or even Spangenberg? Really unclear but have to figure teams like the Red Sox will have interest in some of these guys as utility pieces, while other orgs will look up at some point and decide they need a 3B and would pay a bit for Headley.

Wouldn't Gennett be a killer platoon partner for Forsythe in LA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Conceivable. I'm just not comfortable guessing at who the Dodgers really have their eye on.

Will Acuna = Trout? Pretty please?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
I mean, this is like when everyone in the NBA was trying to find the next Jordan. Or asking if Willie Mays is a good comp for a player. Trout is one of the very best to ever play.
Realize this question was not likely asked in full seriousness, but I always like to find an opportunity to hype Mike Trout. He had his best offensive season on a rate basis in 2017, btw. Unreal.
