I mean, no offense to him at all. He hit well in the bigs last year, too. But Bruce-Conforto (both lefties) with Cespy already in the fold and Lagares as well? Where's that leave Nimmo? But the Mets are valuing him highly? Just sort of strange ...

2:24
Will the Indians regret not pushing in more this offseason or since the AL Central is so weak, are they keeping their powder dry for a midseason pickup?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
They are runaway favorites in the division, so they can afford to wait. And in many ways, they should. What if Kipnis bounces back and is great? What if he falls apart? Likewise Brantley. Or is there a surprise injury? No reason to rush when the rest of the division is mostly in shambles.
2:26
I mean, sure, the Twins could legitimately be competitive, but the other three teams are totally out of it on paper and Minny isn't really a close second to the CLE roster as currently constituted.
Tony T.
2:26
What would Brandon Belt bring back in a trade for the Giants? He's overpaid for a questionable medical history
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
The contract was fair when it was agreed to. He has been very productive when healthy. But yeah, the health questions are now pretty pressing. That's why he's really not even much of a trade candidate right now, b/c other teams would have to bake in so much space for the uncertainty.
Anyway it just doesn't make sense for the Dodgers to sell him at a cut rate. Heck it wouldn't likely make sense to trade him in some effort to upgrade if he was healthy.
2:28
(Yes, I'm on the side that thinks Belt is inexplicably undervalued by many others.)
Not Brad Peacock
2:28
Why is Brad Peacock so under rated?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
I mean, he was sort of the biggest piece in the Gio Gonzalez trade and then fell off the map for like six years. He was excellent last year, but I think that has been duly recognized. You have to remain a little skeptical given the track record before that.
Dwight

Jose Bautista. His only options at this point are Rays or retirement, right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Hey, Granderson got some cash. Hard to guess really at this point since we have seen so little development on the hitter side of the market.
John
2:31
What are the odds the Phillies sign one of Arrieta, Cobb or Lynn? I have to think the longer they remain unsigned the more likely they are to get involved and strike.
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
But all the other teams that need pitching still have openings, too. Not sure the timing really suggests much about how the chips will fall.
2:33
Or let's say *where* the chips will fall. Obviously it's an indication that not many guys have been able to force up bidding and get a really big offer placed in front of them. In that sense, I guess you could argue it's more likely now that some guys will under-earn expectations. But even that I'm not totally convinced is inevitable.
2:34
Could also see a rise in AAV but shorter years. That has been the case with the biggest contracts thus far (Wade Davis, Carlos Santana).
2:35
That increases the risks to the individual player -- I mean, risk of not maxing out career earnings -- but also leaves some upside with that player and would not necessarily mean less overall spending by teams, in the long run.
Complicated subject, so I'm not going to really be able to address it in full here, obviously.
Yu Darvish

The Twins have offered me 5/125.  Should I take it or will I get more out of the Angels or the Yankees?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Even if true ... still think he can get more. But we'll see.

2:37
Willy Contreras the best catcher in the game?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Wouldn't be surprised if he lays claim to that mantle in next few years, but he doesn't have it now.
Royalsfan
2:37
Do you think the Royals could sign Jarrod Dyson to play center field?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Think he's way too useful to other teams and will get more money from a contender.
Toffrey Jodd
2:38
The Red Sox can’t possibly be content with 1 JD Martinez to fix the offence, assuming they even get him, are they? Houston, New York & Cleveland are an entire caliber ahead of Boston even with JD IMO.
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
Shouldn't it be Toffrey Jedd?
But anyway
2:39
I'm not sure that's true. BOS has some guys that could legitimately bounce back to pretty significant talent ceilings after down 2017 seasons. Quite a few, in fact. Pedroia, JBJ, Xander, Hanley, Price, even Betts.
2:40
Maybe it shouldn't be JD and done, but I think Boston could reasonable expect to be in the thick of things if it gets that contract finished off.
Confused Cardinal
2:41
Why do some StL fans dislike Hosmer?  Isn’t he the same as Molina (GG, leader, clutch)
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
But Yadi plays the toughest position on the diamond.
2:42
I have no idea how Cards fans feel about Hoz, but it's not a very clean comparable. Having a guy like Yadi who runs the staff and gets back there and produces every damn day is quite a bit different from whatever it is Hosmer is, and that's true even if you think the world of him.

Jacoby Ellsbury
2:44
I've got more in the tank than people think. Besides the Giants and the Orioles, is anyone interested in me?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
That may be, but what would the open-market value be on Ells?
2:45
At most he'd be in that high-end 4th OF range, right? Like 2/14 type of money?
Let's try this as a thought experiment on it ...
2:46
Who is the better left-handed-hitting CF in 2018?

Jarrod Dyson (53.4% | 678 votes)

Jacoby Ellsbury (46.6% | 592 votes)

In a radio interview, Bud Black insinuated that the team might have one or two new Rockies in the fold in the next six weeks.  Who do you think that he is referring to?
