Doesn't mean it'd be a blockbuster deal or anything.
2:48
(Oh and I haven't heard what Black said, so I'm taking that at face value. Most teams will add another player in that span so it's not like it seems portentous.)
2:49
Dyson running a little bit ahead of Ells but they are in the same ballpark. We predicted 2/12 for Dyson earlier in the winter. So ... there's a lot of $ for the Yankees to eat if they want to move Jacoby.

Do u think we trade Travis Shaw to the braves?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
That particular rumor did not end up on our site for a reason. It is just ... the idea of the Brewers, of all teams, signing an older/more expensive version of a player they already have and then trading that player (whose own trade value is hardly certain) for ??? ... it doesn't really seem plausible.

If Arrieta has 5-6 offers shouldn’t he be deciding soon? Obviously won’t get much better.

Boras is his agent and Jake has made several comments suggesting he puts a high value on his services and doesn't lack for self-confidence. It could drag out. Not saying it will, but it would really not be that surprising.

Not announced yet, but I will sign with the Rockies for 1 year, $2.5mm.  Hold the spot for McMahon until June or July then step aside to be a power/veteran glove and bat off the bench.  You with me?
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
Wouldn't be surprising at all.
2:55
Except for the "glove ... off the bench" part, ha.

Would Realmuto make the Nats better on paper than the Astros?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
No but it'd be a pretty big jump in their projections b/c the Nats probably have like a 1 WAR backstop duo as it stands.
2:57
Add JTR, sign a top starter, maybe even make a surprising outfield or bullpen addition ... now the Nats might project in HOU range.
2:58
It's all on paper right now, anyway. Nationals have a very good team that ought to be fit to compete as-is. But they also have at least two spots (C, SP) where they could make big upgrades.

The Mets and deGrom agree on a contract extension today.  What are the terms?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Without trying to nail the $$$, there are two really good, recent comps: Kluber (pre-arb, $38MM) and Carlos Martinez (3+ class, $51MM). deGrom is more like Kluber in being somewhat older and very accomplished, but in CarMart's service class.
BTW those were both 5-year deals with two options.

Is Bruce Maxwell really going to be behind the plate in Oakland on opening day?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Still see the A's as a contender to add another catcher and bump Maxwell into reserve duty.

ah geeze, is marisnick going to get regular at bats?  seems like hes a tad buried behind marwin springer Reddick, and they made fisher untouchable in the cole deal, so that's another potential impediment..   am I reading this right?   guy just seems like a 5 tool guy (particularly if he cleans up the hit tool) that isn't going to get enough run to achieve stud potential.     I'm guessing the return would have to be big to shake him loose...
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Marisnick a 5-tool guy? Hmmm. I mean I guess in some ways he has shown each tool at various times, but never all at once. He had a very weird season last year, too, with the power just seeming to come from nowhere. I don't think he's going to get buried; I expect he'll continue to be used as a platoon type of player, which is probably appropriate given what he's shown previously.
3:06
Wanted to go look it up quick to be sure ... .252 isolated slugging last year. Only once cracked .200 in reasonable sample size in minors.
K rate jumped to 34.7%. There are signs of regression here, obviously.

In Steve's last chat, he stated that he couldn't comprehend why the Yankees wouldn't "upgrade" their back up catcher position since Austin Romine was one of the worse offensive players last season. Can you inform him, or maybe myself, on the importance of back up catchers work off the field, and if his experience with the organization is more important than his offensive production?
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
You don't know any better than Steve does whether Romine's history with the org is really that important. Presumably, the team has some idea, so I guess we can trust their judgment to an extent. But it's not like the alternative reserves aren't going to be hard workers who support the pitching staff, presumably.
I generally agree with Steve on that point. But I get (and I'm sure he does too) that teams may really not be looking for much in certain circumstances from that roster spot.

Jeez, a guy like Gregerson can have a great career, then one off year and suddenly it's panic mode when he's announced as closer
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
He has had a fine career, but last year wasn't his finest season and he's getting a bit long in the tooth. Plenty of reason to think he'll be a strong reliever, and perhaps is even worthy of commanding the 9th, but I can understand why Cards fans are hoping the unit picks up more pieces.

What would a Schoop extension look like
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Jean Segura's deal seems a decent comp (also in the 4+ service class). He got 70. Schoop has a higher arb number to work from, which helps his case, though Segura is a shortstop and was coming off of a very good offensive season, too.

Many observers (MLBTR folks included) have opined the Giants "don't have the prospects" for this or that, and yet the G-Men  have pulled off two of the most meaningful trades of the off-season with their measly prospects. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
They acquired expensive, older players. Think that pretty much explains it. No disconnect from my perspective.
3:15
I also think, btw, that people over-do it with the talk of "don't have the prospects." There are going to be situations where organizations don't line up well -- if, say, their only elite young talent is already in the majors and they won't trade it. And there are some times where farms are pretty barren. But I think we hear that "don't have the prospects" line much more than we should. (I try not to use it myself b/c I think it's often just utilized as a crutch and b/c I think many people have fooled themselves into thinking they know more about prospect value than they do.)
