I don't think the sky is falling in Pittsburgh. Obviously in some regards it's disappointing when the big names leave, esp when there aren't super sparkly young players returning. But this is the game these lower-payroll orgs play.
Separate question/argument as to whether Pirates are carrying a fair payroll level.
Generally, though, I'm stunned that so many people were stunned by the Cutch trade. It seemed pretty danged likely, no?

Shouldn't the Giants jettison Samardzilla for picks and salary help?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
So they have more money to go sign a different, expensive veteran pitcher? (Not sure what you mean by picks.)
3:20
Not like they have a rotation surplus to work with. He's almost certainly going to be on the Giants' OD roster.

3:20
huge Mets fan, besides the obvious 2nd/3rd base upgrade what do you think the Mets need to make a push into the playoffs
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
For god to wrap their pitchers' ulnar collateral ligaments in magic tape that prevents them from tearing or otherwise causing problems.
3:22
Also every other aspect of the musculoskeletal system in the elbow/forearm, shoulder, back, neck, and (for good measure) the entire rest of the human body.
3:23
Going to take a few more and then I'll have to wrap it up ...

One year pillow for CGon to CWS.
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
Could see that. Other teams will also have interest. He may have to decide whether he wants a role on a contender that likely won't be full-time or a chance to play every day to fully rebuild his value (with the possibility of a mid-season trade to a winning org).
Harper
3:26
Should I sign with the Cubs at a fair rate if they extend Bryant?  Say 8yr 215 deals for us both?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
I love how Harper to Cubs talk has so seamlessly replaced Harper to Yankees talk.
3:27
Bryce will have waaaay more bargaining power next winter than does Bryant, who'll still be looking ahead at 3 arb years. This scenario seems to suppose that Harper is willing to take a big paycut to allow the Cubs to keep Bryant as well.
3:29
Obviously, I don't think matching contracts (however fashionable) is likely .... more importantly, the Cubs still have that Heyward deal hanging around their neck. Not at all clear they'll be best positioned to drop a massive offer at Harper. Possible, sure, but those who see it as a fait accompli (or even strong likelihood) are putting way too much stock in the fact that Harper and Bryant are buddies.

Do you think both Andujar and Torres will start the Yankees' opening day game?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
All indications are Gleyber will be at Triple-A. They are going to add at least one MLB infielder.
Dealer
3:31
Are the other Bucs outfielders available specifically Polanco, Marte?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Don't see any reason to think so.
Surprise Contender
3:31
Can you see the Rays as a surprise contender like the Twins last year? Some bounce back years from a few players on that team can make a big difference to me.
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Not inconceivable. Tough division, but there's some upside on that roster in my mind.
Leo
3:31
Ellsbury for Jordan Zimmerman.... who says no?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Zimmermann (no-trade clause)
Tomahawk chop
3:32
Ronald Acuna > Mike Trout!!
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
Seems to be the consensus in some corners of Braves fandom.
I mean, good luck.
Wondering Sox
3:34
You have to wonder what precedent the Red Sox are setting with Mookie Betts.  Granted Mookie asked for a lot, but the Red Sox front office has to see that he's their best player and one of the most exciting players in the league.  Shouldn't they just pay him?  This seems to set up their future failure to sign him long term.
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
His filing number is way over what our projection system had or what our arb guru Matt Swartz pegged him for with comps. So it seems pretty reasonable for the team to be holding out here. Remember, giving him $3MM extra now means you're paying that again every year of arbitration.
Tyler
3:36
Any solid options for a platoon partner with Forsythe at second base, or do the dodgers stay in house?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Earlier in the offseason, I was asked often about what the Dodgers might do. I said "I have no idea what this front office is really going to try to do." They went out and landed Tom Koehler and Scott Alexander.
So, I stand by my earlier position, ha.
Steve Adams
3:39
I’m better than you, Jason, & Tim. That is all.
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Why would you say this in here when you are also gchatting with me literally right now? Can't we take this dispute off line?
3:40
Steve and I would like to announce we will be live streaming a fistfight between he and I to be held in the Citi Field parking lot on opening day.
Thanks for nothing.
3:40
6 questions. All thoughtful. All about different teams. None answered. Again. Wanker.
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
I may be a wanker, but it's not b/c I missed your questions, which I'm sure were excellent. As always, a reminder: there are lots and lots of people in here, with lots and lots of questions incoming. Far too many for me to see them all, let alone answer even a decent portion.
Ralph Bengivenga
3:42
Juan Lagares to SF. Seems like a perfect fit wouldn't you say
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Don't the Mets still need him, though? That's what is so curious about the whole Nimmo thing I noted above. Lagares is the righty hitter and the CF capable piece. He fits well with the 3 other guys, who are really all corner OFers.
Toronto
3:43
Why no Toronto love? Never see you discussing the jays
