Speaking of opt-out clauses, will there ever come a day where a club will have the option to decline the remainder of the contract (not speaking of option years) or will the MLBPA simply not allow it? Something like a 6 year deal with an opt-out after year 3?

An arb deal? That is completely different.

Arbitration is about arriving at a salary for a season you know the guy is on that team. You have to agree or you fight about it and someone else decides.

Extensions are about setting future salaries and, more importantly, giving/getting additional seasons of control over years in which the player would otherwise be free to market their services (and any number of years into the future) to all 30 teams.

I generally expect they will, yeah. This will likely shake out more as a purgatory phase to make them think about what they did and/or a situation where there's a sort of a 'roid tax so only the reeeeeallly good players associated with steroids make it in.

Adam Eaton getting 7 years? Hasn't the longest deal this offseason been 3 years? What makes you think any of the non-elite talents (Machado, Harper, etc.) are going to keep getting those type of commitments? (Hint: They're not.)
