Yet that's what they decided to do. Guess if they are in contention in mid-season they could pursue alternatives. Shouldn't be too hard to get decent bats if this winter's market is any indication.

Why did you guys think Holland would get so much money when he had a 9.00 plus era in his last 19 appearances? Mistake on your part or do you see something else?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
The end of the season thing was mostly limited to a few bad outings and he was also in his first year back from TJ. I was in favor of projecting him for three years, but I don't think we were out of line at all. He had a 3/51 offer or something of the sort from the Rockies, so he could have landed right where we had him.

This offseason make the younger players think more about accepting extensions rather then hitting free agentcy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
Have to factor it into the equation, but I suppose teams will do so as well, right? I also am still holding out for a larger body of evidence on premier players.
3:45
Let's also not forget that there are some different considerations floating around. Can't fully cover it all here, but, for instance, there's a question of the amount of annual salaries leaguewide vs the length of guarantees for older free agents. Teams have dipped down a bit in their year over year spending (last I checked, anyway), but that could be a one-year thing. They definitely have less committed in long-term payroll. If that continues, then perhaps we'll see a rise in annual salaries but a shortening of deals.
3:46
It's super complicated, though, when you start playing it all out. If there's less dead money on long-term deals sitting around, does that money just get spent on younger guys instead? Or does it mean teams can just spend less and better control salary growth? Etc

When will guys like Trayce Thompson start getting traded?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Won't all be traded. Some will end up just being exposed to waivers. Generally, though, the action heats up once teams feel sure about roster decisions and don't need to worry about late-breaking injuries.

So what do you think of the Phillies chances this year? Do they have a shot at the wild card? I think they have a shot at the Division, with the rest being fairly weak, and the Nationals having a ton of injury risk.
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I think that is a pretty optimistic perspective.

Did you read Thomas Boswell's piece about Harper and Machado? and what were your thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
I did (assuming it's the one he published yesterday). Frankly I did not feel like it was all that convincing. Where's the evidence that the top-level market has just gone away? Smart teams like the Cubs gave huge money to younger FAs in very recent memory. Big spenders have now freed themselves from luxury tax problems.

I think the Royals are an interesting test case this off-season. Adding all these cheap veterans helps them push for a playoff spot if absolutely everything goes their way. Otherwise I see some nice pieces to trade to speed up a rebuild a long with 2 extra draft picks. Future free agents have got to hope that their approach leads others to copy going forward.
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
Ehhh the trouble there is that they had such a barren roster before making the moves. It would be pretty shocking if they made the postseason, for me.
3:51
Of course, I always underrate them. Anyhow, I did think it was cool they decided to go ahead and take advantage of some good players being available to try to improve their product. Good for them.

Orioles fan, actually pretty impressed at what the O's have put together recently during spring training, and wondering if they can sustain this into the regular season - any chance they end up doing better this year than the projections (again)?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
I guess this is the week when everyone feels goo vibes for their team. Not really seeing it, James, esp with two high-end clubs atop the division.

Why has no one taken a chance on Drew Storen or Trevor Rosenthal on a two year deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Well, Storen was already in minor-league deal territory, honestly. Rosenthal is definitely a candidate for that type of agreement, but some guys prefer to rehab on their own, then showcase and sign (as Holland did).
Timing may also be a factor to some extent. Rosenthal can take his time and be at full strength next winter to showcase.

Doesn’t seem very smart for the Royals to sign Duda, Jay and Moustakas when they are staring at a 100 loss season.
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Clearly there's an argument for a full-blown tanking. (And also for some more trades than what they elected to do.) But I can respect that they don't want to do that.
JT
3:57
Best compromise: one less year of team control (5 years instead of 6) before hitting free agency for players in exchange for pitch clocks for owners to get higher tv ratings- which side says no and why??
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
I mean that'd be a helluva deal for the players. Can't fathom the league considering that kind of concession for a rules move that they would consider beneficial for everyone.
Rob
3:58
Given what has happened this off season, do you think teams will offer fewer qualifying offers next year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
We have already seen that happen, once players started accepting them. Zack Cozart is a good example. But yes, I do think teams will have to be more cautious in issuing them.

Three more names for the Yankee=Met list. What was the thinking behind the Neil Walker signing, with Wade having a good spring?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
They surely aren't going to be swayed too much by a "good spring." Walker has been an automatic 2.5-3.5 WAR type of guy for the past eight or whatever years. He seems to be in good health. Can play exactly the spots the Yankees needed the depth. That's an easy move to add him at that cost.
4:01
If they really believed in Wade, or really believed he or one of the other young players was truly ready, then it'd be different. But the move tells you a lot about their internal assessment, because otherwise they'd likely have kept that salary free for possible mid-season moves.

Is there any chance that the AL Wild Card spots will not include the Yankees or the Red Sox this year?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Sure. But I think both are positioned to make the postseason.

Tyson Ross 180 innnings under 3.50 era?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
What are you looking for here?
4:05
I mean ... I think it is pretty, pretty evident that's a fanciful hope. We know he can do it. But all the recent evidence says it's quite unlikely at this point.
Roland

Was Acuna sent down already? I heard on a podcast that he was but haven't seen it in writing yet. Is it  inevitable?
Jeffrey Todd

Don't think so, but it is pretty much inevitable, yeah.

With Mark Trumbo out 3-4 weeks does it make it more likely that Austin Hays makes the Opening Day roster?
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Ehhhh maybe. Seems like a truly temporary solution would be easiest, but perhaps if they were on the fence they just decide "screw it, let's give him a shot to show whathe can do."

Brendan Rodgers starting at 2B for us in '19, or extension for LeMahieu?
