It's Opening Day! Which is also the time that we all freak out about the smallest possible sample sizes.
If watching real baseball isn't enough for you, throw some questions at me and we'll get this moving in a few ...
Just a random commenter
3:14
Not freaking out about Lester or anything
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Clearly the Cubs will have to slug their way to the postseason.
Jimbo
3:14
Do the Blue Jays make the playoffs?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
My prognostication would be that it'll come down to the Jays and the Angels for the last WC. Solid shot, sure.
3:15
I thought our own Mark Polishuk ran things down well. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/offseason-in-review-toronto-blu...
Orioles fan
3:15
Will the Orioles make the playoffs? I think they can.
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
My crystal ball says no. But sure, they can.

good afternoon jeff

And also to you.

What does Greg Holland get me?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
43 IP, 3.63, 29 saves
Perhaps
3:16
Am I crazy, or can the Phillies win 90 games this year? (Not a Phillies fan)
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
You're a little crazy, probably.
3:17
Thing is, do they have a bunch of guys with the upside to make that plausible? Yeah I'd say so. Suppose Franco returns, Arrieta and Nola are aces, Santana and Hoskins rake, Kingery is a revelation ...
3:18
But the odds of all of those things happening at once aren't great.
Pad Squad
3:18
Harold Reynolds thinks the Padres will peak in 2023, 2024. However, Myers, Margot, Hedges, Renfroe, and maybe even Hosmer will be gone after 2022. So, do you think the Padres will be better with those guys, or once they leave?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Seems a bit silly to me to guess how things will look five or six years in the future, honestly.
3:19
There are just so many variables. I don't think Padres fans are going to be okay with "hey, we'll be good in like 5 years" after already waiting this long. So maybe the young players start producing and they start building around them earlier -- as you'd expect given the Hoz signing. Maybe they end up paring back some further-off prospects as part of that. Etc.

3:19
What do you think of the Holland signing
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
Seems like a sensible settlement for both sides at this stage.
Jeff the man
3:20
Best opening day game/experience for you?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
I've only gone once, to Nats Park in 2013, IIRC. The pomp is fun and all, but I prefer those quiet, random games when the stadium isn't even that full or the late-season, nerve-wracking affairs.
Jake
3:22
Hey Jeffrey - What happens now with Tommy Joseph? Seems like the kid deserves a job somewhere, but its hard to see a fit.
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
I'm not sure he does, honestly. No offense to Joseph, but he looks sort of like a guy who'll be up and down from time to time.
Pirates
3:23
I am far from a “fan” from Bucs ownership, but I think the team is a lot better than everyone is speaking of. Wildcard what are your thoughts and what happens at trade deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Well I just wrote a review of their offseason so I was thinking about this. I think you really have to squint to see a clear contender. It's not entirely dissimilar from what I said above re the Phils, though perhaps they have a few less true upside guys but a better spread of depth when you look over their MLB roster and upper levels.
3:26
Just ... where does that team distinguish itself from others? Best case for the rotation, probably, is "actually pretty good." There's loads of versatility and all, so maybe they will squeeze added value, but there aren't many players that can carry a lineup. Marte needs a big bounceback. Bell, while a nice hitter, doesn't exactly profile as a huge middle of the order bat.
Cliff
3:26
Is JT Chargois the Dodgers new set up monster?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
You know someone will be. Seems a little too obvious to pick him. It'll probably be someone more random.
Pat Venditte for the win.
3:28
Speaking of which ... I noticed a few days ago that Brandon Morrow received a $100K Article XX(B) bonus (kept by org, not on opening day roster) in each of the past two seasons.
Just ... needed to note it somewhere and where else but here?
Derek Jeter
3:28
Where do you think Marlins Man will land? (Please let him know that we will be sending a cease and desist regarding his name.)
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
He's a traveling act anyway, and the name wouldn't work with another team put in front of it, so I think the Fish are stuck with him.
Medic Mike
3:29
With many of the QO players that rejected the QO then signed for less so you think more players maybe inclined to accept the QO in future years?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
This sort of thing is also subject to market shifts in the other direction, since teams will be less inclined to offer it. But that has already likely happened to an extent now that a handful of guys have taken it. Can't just give it out and assume it won't be picked up.
Jason
3:30
Over under on Yelich HR? 31?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
That seems like the high end of the plausible range. He has played what, four and a half MLB seasons and never hit more than  ... (checking now) ... 21
