WAR isn't the end-all, obviously, esp for a catcher. Increasingly, though, I think it's a stat that writers will care to be aware of. And that certainly suggests he's not likely to be in true HOF range.

Ichiro, Sale, Verlander, Scherzer, Cano, Goldschmidt, Votto, Arenado, Altuve, Harper... that sum up the rest you missed?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Ichiro should get in, yeah, b/c his Japanese career should also be factored in and he has the 3,000 hits. Others are all just possibilities at most. As in, they still need to really sustain high-level production for a while longer.
Or maybe JV could ice it with a Cy or huge WS performance or some such. The others have a lot more work to do.

Is Franchy Cordero here to stay?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
Would assume they'll give him a reasonable look. But I don't think it's a situation where they'll just run him out there all year long no matter what.
3:33
With everyone healthy there are just 2 open OF spots to share amongst Margot/Renfroe/Pirela/Cordero ... not to mention the other bench players.
Rob S
3:33
Who could the Mets offer to obtain Carson Kelly from the Cards?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Just can't see that happening.
CC Sabathia
3:33
You forgot about me! I would be shocked if I don't make the HOF. 300 wins are no longer realistic, and I have pretty much every other requirement including a Cy young!
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
He'll be debated over, yes.
Rockies
3:34
You suck, Jeff Fraud!
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
This is a good dig, thank you.
Ryan
3:35
The Rangers seem like a good bet to be sellers. It’s early, but who do you see them prioritizing as guys to unload?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Well, Hamels and Beltre could be pretty interesting if healthy and performing, though neither is at all cheap. They have a few other guys with short control situations (Matt Moore, Jake Diekman), but .... there's a reason the team is off to a poor start, too. Getting poor performances thus far.
Derek
3:37
Are the Braves a true wild card contender or are they just hoping that guys like Tucker Flaherty Flowers McCarthy Vizcaino have solid first halves so they can ship them at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
I don't think their outlook has changed much. Most of the surprising veteran performances are riding on huge BABIP figures and such.
Natitude
3:39
I know it is early, but should I be worried about the Nats bullpen?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Never too soon to be worried about the Nats bullpen.
Mike
3:39
Can Goodwin force himself into the picture after Eaton gets back?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
He could push Taylor out of time, yeah.
Chris
3:40
Miggy HoF too.  And Ichiro.  And possibly Yadi and MadBum.
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Yeah Miggy belongs on the list of guys who'll be debated. Already has done enough to be in convo. But if he doesn't accomplish much more ... with new perspective of voters ... don't think he's a sure thing.

What is the right age to bring my son to his first pro baseball game?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
>0 days of age
My daughter's first game was at like 3 months. She slept the whole time, naturally.
3:42
Otherwise ... just go when you can and have a good attitude. When I lived in Denver, I would pay for $10 "rockpile" seats and take the kids down to Coors for BP. We'd stay 5 innings, then let them go play in the CF playground while I watched as much as I could.
Take what you can get. Bring your own food and drink if it's allowed.

Talk me back from the ledge. Please.
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Um ... you have an awful lot to look forward to, maybe, if some number of your prospects advance in the next couple of years. If fortune smiles on you, it won't be a lengthy rebuilding period.
3:44
Is that enough?

3:44
Ellsbury still out.  Do the Yanks have insurance covering his salary expense, and if so, might that cover the rest of his salary if he were to retire due to physical disability.
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
There's no reason at all to believe he's going to retire. He doesn't have one chronic issue that is making it so he can't play.
Not sure if his contract is insured. Many are to some extent, probably, that we don't really know about.

3:45
Where would Braves need to be at deadline to consider becoming buyers? Certain games back of 1st in division or wild card, or just around .500?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
Prepare for a lot of discussion of whether the Braves can "buy, but with the future in mind."  If they fall back, we'll be hearing about how they might be "both buyers and sellers."
3:47
Reality is, they aren't likely to make moves that punt significant future value for the 2018 season. Now, if (big if) they are still in the hunt, see a clear upgrade, and it's a piece that also brings value into the future at an area of need ... then maybe.
Chris
3:47
The Astros are in need of bullpen help in the form of a closer and lefty specialist.  Any options they could look at this early in the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
This is why teams don't generally try to pry veterans loose early in the season: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/padres-likely-to-trade-james-sh...
3:49
I just can't get enough of referencing that trade, sorry. It's just ... I like to imagine AJ Preller stifling laughter while discussing how many tens of millions the White Sox would pick up and then casually saying "Tatis's kid would be fine, sure" before locking up the deal.
