Miles mikolas, hot start or real deal
Tim Dierkes
1:55
Real deal in that he's a sub-4.00 ERA guy who goes deep into games.  Probably have a hard time maintaining a 1% walk rate.

Over/under the Wade Davis contract for Andrew Miller?
Tim Dierkes
1:56
I've got the under.  It's just hard to see for a guy who's going to be 34 in Year 1 of the deal.  I think he gets three years anyway, but not sure anyone will want to give him an AAV of 18.

What's up with the Cubs starters? Quintana is walking almost double his career average, Darvish is issuing 1.5ish more walks per 9 than his career average
Tim Dierkes
1:57
And Chatwood is walking tons of guys, and even Lester more than usual.  I have no idea what the cause is.  But I would imagine that all of these guys have six-start stretches where they walked this many guys, so I'd preach patience.  Of course, Chatty and Yu were never known for their control.

Did you know your name is an anagram for "Irked Items?"
Tim Dierkes
1:58
Quality anagrams always get published.
I once wrote a letter to Spin Magazine that an anagram for "Spin Magazine" is "Name Nazi Pigs."  Go find a copy.  Weezer was on the cover.

What kind of contract is pham looking at?
Tim Dierkes
2:00
Such a tough one.  By the time he'd be a FA, he'd be past his prime, like 34 or so.  I feel like if it were to happen in March 2018, maybe an extension in the $60-70MM range?
Brewers
2:00
Any chance Brewers could get Machado? They have a few really good SP in AAA but don't think the team would want to lose them.
Tim Dierkes
2:02
Maybe a package led by Keston Hiura?  I think the Brewers could put something together.

How big of a blow is the Yadi injury?  He is basically replacement level at this point in his career, but do the cards have anyone worth everyday at bats behind him?
Tim Dierkes
2:03
I think Kelly is an acceptable stopgap as we wait to see how long Yadi will be out.  He's not replacement level at this point though.

If you could only have one for the rest of their career, who would you take: Acuna or Gleyber?
Tim Dierkes
2:03
Acuna.
Who do you take, rest of career?

Acuna (66.2% | 223 votes)

Torres (16.9% | 57 votes)

Who’s the first Red to get traded away?
Tim Dierkes
2:04
I'll go with Scooter Gennett.

Are the Reds really this bad? This is just.....awful.
Tim Dierkes
2:05
It would be nearly impossible to play .235 ball the rest of the way.  You could wipe the roster clean, draft entirely Quad A guys, and play at that level.  So, they'll finish with 60+ wins.  Woohoo?
2:06
Reds - 60 wins this year?

Over (44.1% | 113 votes)

Under (39.5% | 101 votes)

Next 4 hr game?
Tim Dierkes
2:06
Scooter has another one in him.
NL West
2:06
Who do you put your money on to take the NL West? Rockies or Los D-Backs?
Tim Dierkes
2:07
For me it's actually a DBacks-Dodgers toss-up.  I'll take the D'Backs by a hair.
SF Giants

Andrew Suarez has looked great. Can he fill in the shoes of Johnny Cueto?
Tim Dierkes
2:08
If you suggested  he could put up an ERA around 4.00 rest of season, I could buy that.  That's not quite Cueto though.
Jack

Do the Cardinals need to make a move to become a serious competitor?
Tim Dierkes
2:09
No, the current team probably reaches the playoffs.  But there is a big incentive to win the Central rather than get a WC slot, and certainly they should push everything in toward that effort.
Theo Espstein
2:09
How come I'm not very good at signing Free Agents? Or developing pitching?
Tim Dierkes
2:12
Theo does have a running lost of FA flops - Lackey, J.D. Drew to a degree, EJax, Crawford, Heyward, Julio Lugo, Chatty probably.  On the other hand he has a lot of nice one-year deals on his ledger, though those are hard to mess up.

At what point does Chris Archer stop getting a pass for giving up a lot of runs?
Tim Dierkes
2:13
It's a valid point.  We're now about 70 starts into the whole "Well, his peripherals are good" thing.  He is legitimately HR prone.  The high BABIP only runs about 250 innings, so I don't know what to make of it yet.

ETA on vlad jr? will the jays wait till the deadline and trade donaldson to create room or will they release morales asap?
Tim Dierkes
2:15
I don't expect a Donaldson trade while they're in contention, but releasing Kendrys is a valid option.  And I do think Vlad Jr is a better player than Kendrys right now.  Over four months that could add up.  Yet I will note that the projections suggest Vlad Jr is only a touch better hitter at present.  It's just hard to ignore those numbers he's putting up.

Now that Cueto is diagnosis with elbow, Do you think the Giants will still go for another starting pitcher like Harvey?
Tim Dierkes
2:16
Sure, they're a fit for Harvey.  But what are the odds Harvey puts up an ERA under 4.00...maybe 10%?
Jack

Pujols retire as a Cardinal?
