Realistic options for Eppler to strengthen the Angels bullpen?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Honestly way too many to list.
3:32
Many we don't even know yet, b/c some current contender will probably fade and sell.
Travis
3:32
Hey, we're throwing a Nick Markakis bash for when he gets to 3,000 hits? We're all puttin' in $30. Can I count on you?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Sure, I'll promise to give you $30 in 2029, when it will probably not be worth much due to inflation.
Not. Happening.
That is the strongest take you'll ever get out of me.

3:34
Would you get more value out of trading Raisel Iglesias by himself or paired with somethings no else a team needs, like a LHRP or Blandino/Duvall?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Have to get him off the DL first. No particular reason to see him as a package guy, esp since the Reds don't have many other pieces that are going to be pursued by contenders.
3:36
Don't see either of those two guys as real deadline assets.
Nick
3:36
Anyway my Pads package both Tyson Ross and Brad Hand to maximize the value of the deal?  Any takers....?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Same here. If Hand moves, he's the real asset. I guess if there's a big swap involving him, and another club asks for Ross also to be included, it could be a sweetener. But there's no real reason to think this would be particularly likely.
Generally, yes, package deals happen. But it's really specific to a certain buying team, not generally something where a seller is going out and marketing two guys together.

Why don't the Orioles make a concerted effort to move Machado now rather than closer to the deadline?  Presumably they would get more in return from a team getting 3/4 of a season rather than less than 1/2 of Machado.  Also, meow.

The early sell is another thing that people ask about every year. And it does happen from time to time. But it's probably less likely for Manny -- given the Angelos situation -- than for other players. And there's a reason it generally doesn't happen. Buying teams want to wait until they have full information about their needs and outlook before they make their mid-season moves, so it generally isn't the case that you can just get more by selling early. And some sell-side teams want to wait to see if they wish to sell at all.

Do you see a team taking a chance and drafting Luke Heimlich, or is he untouchable?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Right or wrong, better or worse, I'll guess he ends up in an MLB org at some point, somehow.

Manny Machado going to St. Louis for Jack Flaherety, Jedd Gyorko, and Austin Gomber or is that too much
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
I don't see how they could give up Flaherty when he's a big MLB contributor right now and such a valuable future piece.
3:43
Cards rotation could be what drives them in the second half. Has potential to be a menacing unit this year.

3:44
Will you admit the Braves for real?
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
Have you read my answers to this essential question the past two weeks? I have already said clearly I think they are a real contender.
3:45
Also think Albies and Markakis will fall off. And that pitching has questions. If pressed -- baseball  is such a variable game -- I'd pick them to miss the postseason but stay in the race for most of the season.
Being a Reds fan is fun!!!
3:46
When will the Redlegs finally give up on Hamilton?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
They may have already. But he'd be an interesting deadline asset regardless, since he could be an awesome postseason roster piece.
Point being: nothing to do until it comes time to deal this summer.

Is there any particular reason why the PCL is considered so hitter friendly compared to the IL?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Just park effects.

3:48
Do you think the Yankees hold pat on starting pitchers? Cole Hamels name has been thrown around a lot, but besides him and maybe Fulmer, who are some viable options to help with their underachieving rotation?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
Not sure I'd call it underperforming. The overall array of outcomes thus far are pretty much within range of expectations, I think. So ... yeah, they seem ripe for an upgrade there. If that's all they really are looking to do, then they can fit the Hamels $, though is he really that much of an upgrade? (See above linked post.)
3:50
Otherwise ... the SP rental market isn't looking great, honestly. Most of the obvious sellers don't have really worthwhile rental assets. Who's the most obvious rental guy beside Hamels? Maybe Tyson Ross?
So, perhaps they will consider going after a Fulmer or Archer or other controllable arm?
Nick
3:50
Does Brad Hand bring back a top 100 prospect?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Absolutely.
That extension really increased his value. And he's still really effective.
3:52
Not going to try to guess at a specific package, but clearly the Pads would be in the driver's seat. Happy to keep him but maybe would move him if they got something really appealing in return.
Goldschmidt
3:52
If he doesn't turn things around, might he actually be a buyout candidate this winter?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
No way.
