Would still have to take the risk of a rebound.

if giants trade bumgarner to yankees, what kind of prospects would you expect them to receive in return?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
I'll answer this if you answer the question, "what would it take for the Giants to get Gleyber Torres?" or similar.
3:54
It's just not something that I expect the Giants to consider at all, unless something drastically changes between now and then. And if they did consider it, they'd be asking for that type of player (and then some).

I saw a report today that the Cubs were willing to offer Javy Baez and Mike Montgomery plus a pitching prospect for Machado.  Any chance that actually happens?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
People have been saying this for months. I haven't seen this report. Sounds awfully fishy.
3:55
Not b/c they wouldn't necessarily consider it -- I don't think they would do it -- but b/c they just aren't having those conversations with the Orioles right now and the discussion of  what they'd do will largely be responsive to what Baltimore seeks.

How much would the Nats need to give up to bring back Wilson Ramos?  Or do you think they'd be better off just sticking with a Severino/Kieboom tandem until Wieters is ready, assuming the 6-8 weeks Wieters has estimated is realistic?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
No rush at this point, but they should be canvassing the market at C. Hard to guess what priorities will be by the time the deadline comes. Maybe Wieters is back and healthy. Maybe bullpen is, and a few guys emerge. Still several key position players working back, healthy guys can always break, etc, etc.
You can say that for every team to an extent, of course, it's just ... the Nats have talent almost everywhere. A decent bit of it is in flux right now, though. One good bet is they'll be after at least one good reliever.

Should I be Baltimore's General Manager next year?

I'll go ahead and assume everyone voting "yes" is picking it b/c it'd be so much fun to watch an experiment in that direction (anyone remember the LaRussa regime in Arizona) when virtually every other org is going the other way.

Is Sosh managing workload or hiding Ohtani from AL East teams?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
They need to win games now. Can't hide him.

Jeff, what do you want to do for a real job after MLBTR?  It's not like you make much more than minimum wage on here, right?  You're an "independent contractor" (like work-at-home moms), aren't you?  I think you MIGHT be able to work for a minor league team someday, but not quite a Major League team.
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
I used to have a "real job" and did not enjoy it. I am an employee on a salary, own a house, travel and do all sorts of things with my family, etc.
If you need a "real job" and wasteful spending to make yourself feel good, I feel sorry for ya!
4:02
Do what makes you feel good, folks. Try to be a good citizen and contribute where you can. But don't be a sucker!
Gleyber vs. Shohei

While one is clearly the front runner, hard to ignore what Torres is doing. The AL ROY close this year?

Should I stop drinking the coolaid on the SF Giants being actual contenders? They're only 2.5 games out of 1st but wow, their SP pitching is atrocious (Ty Blach leads the staff with a 4.30 ERA) and they have practically no room to add additional pieces while still staying under the luxury tax threshold. Wish there was something creative the front office could do to land at least a servicable starting pitcher..
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I don't think they are totally out of it. If they can hold on til pitching returns, Mac Williamson gets back and continues his sudden breakout, etc ... there are ways it can go right.
Not that I'm supremely optimistic.
4:04
Okay all, couple more quick ones and I have to run.

Do the cardinals make a trade for Tyson Ross, move Reyes to the bullpen, dfa waino, or send flaherty or weaver down?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
Wait why would adding Ross be a part of this, given current options? Waino will hang out on the DL til he's good and ready while they hopefully enjoy the bounty of good young arms they have on staff once Reyes and Martinez are back.

Chances the Rockies trade for a 1st baseman at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Seems like an easy way to improve. Hard to get why they didn't go ahead and grab someone when they had the chance, if they weren't going t give McMahon a long look in the first place.
4:08
It is also easy to say "Mark Reynolds!!!" now that he's raking, but I can understand why they didnt go back to that well. (I assume he wasn't just willing to take a minor league deal to go back to Colorado.)
Max
4:08
Do you think Adam Jones gets traded before the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Eh I'm not sure there'll be enough interest and he's such an icon. Could see them trying to work out a new deal with him even if they otherwise make rebuilding steps.

Next big prospect to come up and make an impact?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Give me Vlad!
4:11
I will say in Jays' defense -- err, defence -- his defense -- err, defence -- is a legit thing to consider. Not to say he can't handle the glove at all (what do I know) but doing it under the MLB microscope may not be the best challenge at this time if they have real concerns. Was easier in that regard for the Nats to call up Soto, who's a good OF/baserunner. Really hard to know just what they are thinking. But it feels increasingly like they are going to have to go and try to get a jolt.
Los Padres
4:11
Following up on Tyson Ross, if he keeps up some semblance of this performance, does he get signed if he turns down a Qualifying Offer?  Would he turn down a QO?  Could the Padres get more by trading him at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
I think odds of that are fairly slim, just b/c of his awful arm troubles. Definitely don't see that really weighing too much into the sell decision b/c so much could go wrong. If there's a useful return to be had, they should probably take it.
Brew Crew
4:12
If we're not the favorites then who is?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
Man it's a tough call for me. Like the Brewers in many ways but in some regards I want to say I like the Cards. And who can count out the Cubs??? And those Bucs! Should be a fun one.
(Sorry, Reds fans. At least one of you is having fun, if above respondents' handle is accurate.)
