Hard to address that without knowing what it is that's causing your sentiment to change. Generally, I feel like the league is trying to freshen things up without changing the nature of the game. Just how it all sorts out is hard to tell. In many ways, baseball is an ideal sport for the social media/stats/easily accessible highlights/gambling sports world that we're entering.

There were quotes back in December that the Blue Jays weren't going to trade Donaldson in the off-season as they were afraid that attendance would drop.  Guess what?  Attendance dropped anyways (stupid ticket price increase!).  Now Donaldson's trade value has dropped significantly.  Too bad they didn't just trade him to St Louis when they had a chance!
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
This is always a risk. We really don't know what was on the table and whether it was even close to sufficient for a guy with the expectations everyone had for JD this year.

I want to know if the Orioles WILL pull the trigger on Machado.  Not SHOULD they, because yes they should.  But WILL they?
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
I realize there's a report saying "well, we don't know what Angelos will do." But ... surely ...
Mets Believers
3:56
Hey there are a few of us! But... perhaps the Mets should trade Mesoraco while he has gained some value? Especially with Plawlecki back.
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Nah, enjoy the ride. Not going to get value out of him after a hot streak.
3:57
(Not saying, specifically, that he can't keep hitting. The guy has shown before he has talent. Just, I don't think any other team is going to go wild to pry him loose.)

Bronx met fan here since 7 in 1984....PS...thanks Dad!!!😱
Jeffrey Todd

Wait if baseball is just now losing a Mets fan, something really must be going wrong!

What options do the Cardinals realistically have with Fowler?  Would they have to "Tino Martinez" (pay him to play for another team) at this point to make him go away?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
The realistic option is to wait for him to come around, because there's every reason to believe he will. He has a miserable BABIP but otherwise looks totally normal (so far as I recall from looking into this recently).
I was answering the same question a few weeks ago re Carpenter, you may recall. And ... looky there, already up to .224/.340/.435

Any good hot takes?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
By definition, no.

Are Cole Hamels and JA Happ really enough of an upgrade for the Yankees? Neither would seem to be a pitcher who would get a playoff start and have a great chance to shut down a team.
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Hard to say right now whether either would really make sense. But I think there are scenarios where they would. I mean, Gray has obviously had some real issues. Hamels is a solid pitcher still and has  loads of postseason experience. Happ has been pretty danged good.
4:04
How does Tanaka progress? Does CC hit a wall or get hurt? When does Montgomery return? There are lots of scenarios where you'd view the veteran lefties as very good fits.
Relatively Speaking

Thanks for the chats..... Think it would be a huge mistake for the Cubs to deplete an already barren farm system for any rental player. What think ye?
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
Well, I don't think I'd say they'd be foolish to consider any rental players. If we're talking about giving up a little future value to get a decent pen piece or something, then that's an easy tradeoff to justify. If we're talking about emptying the cupboard to get Machado (let's suppose the O's just want high-upside prospects, not MLB assets), then ... I can definitely see your argument.
4:07
Worth bearing in mind that they have not emptied the farm for rental pieces alone. And they made some of the calls they did b/c they elected to stake a bet on their existing, controllable MLB position players, most of whom remain affordable and controllable.
4:08
But there was the Chapman deal, and doing another like that would be tough to manage, perhaps. (If they even have the top-end talent to do something like that.)
Franmil
4:09
Is Franmil Reyes a lock to stick with Padres for the remainder of the season? He's hitting bombs left and right.
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Not a lock. Has like a 250 OBP and can be optioned. But may as well give him some run.

hahahhaahahahahahahahahahaha wright is done.... a nice farce for insurance reasons
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
Well I generally agree that the odds are stacked immensely against him. Wasn't suggesting otherwise. Also don't take glee in that ... stinks to see such a solid dude laid up.

Local talk-show hosts here seem to think the Orioles will reap huge rewards from trading Manny.    For 2 months of production???
Jeffrey Todd
4:11
Sometimes you have JD Martinez and get nothing, other times you make out like a bandit for Scott Feldman. That's both b/c of variations in demand and b/c of the uncertainties of future performance.
4:12
I will say that I think there'll be loads of interest in Manny. He's an immensely skilled, mid-prime player on the left side of the infield. And some teams will even value getting him now in hopes of re-signing him. It is tempting to just think of the recent JDM example and assume too much about what it means for Manny.
4:13
I'll get a couple more here and then I have to run ...
4:14
Can I just say how much I love the Mets and everything surrounding them?

Something needs to change. Calhoun send him to minors, Chris Young release. Jose Miguel Fernandez hitting over 350 put him at 3B or 2B do something Eppler. Angels have zero life in them make some changes. 3 more years of Albert in cleanup spot will kill this team. HELP
Jeffrey Todd
4:15
1) Can't
2) Probably won't, at least not yet
3) Heck yeah we do need to see JMF in the majors at some point soon. He has flat-out raked, with outstanding K/BB numbers, in the upper minors.

Any lukewarm takes?

Will I get trade by 7/31?
Jeffrey Todd

That seems plausible.
(That work, Trav?!)

4:16
How long until Homer Bailey is released?
Jeffrey Todd
4:17
Thing is, the Reds need innings and aren't going anywhere right now. They just took on Matt Harvey on the same basic premise of keeping Bailey around. He's clearly a respected guy over there. Think they hold unless and until he proves unusable in the bullpen.
