Unless they are going to embark upon a massive rebuilding effort OR they get an overwhelming offer of controllable talent that will go right onto (or at least very close to) the MLB roster, I don't see it.
3:40
I don't think the former scenario is happening. And really, it probably shouldn't. Not with some big-ish contractual commitments to veterans who aren't performing right now and can't be moved.
3:41
[Sorry brief internet outage]
The latter scenario seems the likelier path to a deGrom trade. That is: some team just ponies up a monster package b/c they think they need deGrom b/c the rest of the market just isn't that special. Not sure where that could come from other than the Yanks, but ... it's imaginable, I guess.
3:42
That also explains why Jacob is a likelier mover than Noah, who needs to reestablish himself at full health for a long stretch before anyone is going to go wild to get him.

is this disaster my fault???
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Hard to know the behind-the-scenes dynamic, but unless he was the one advocating for a lot of questionable recent roster decisions, no.
I'm also not going to pan the O's too much for a) overperforming expectations recently and wanting to keep trying to do so and b) continuing to try to put a winner on the field even if it didn't feel that likely from the outside
3:44
We can doubt it from our couches and clamor for a rebuild, but it's much more defensible than erring in the opposite direction.

Gleyber Torres straight up for DeGrom?

Why is giolito so bad? Do you still see him as futur as?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
Seems like he's headed to the pen before too long. Hard to see evidence of future ace in there. But I also haven't seen an updated scouting look, so maybe there's still some redeeming elements to what he's doing.

Why are the Angels wasting Mike Trout?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I mean, you can't say they didn't try over the winter.

WHO is the next Mets player to be tradedwill be ...... ?

With that said, do you see any chance in any universe that the O's refuse to trade Machado if they get a less than ideal return?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Peter Angelos is still around, so I guess, but I think it's remote.
James Franco

Is Wilson Ramos a realistic target for Red Sox? Would only have to give up Sandy Leon and a minor prospect.
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Ramos is a target for BOS and others. Not sure why you think that package would get it done; I don't.
3:49
Pretty interesting poll results, btw.
3:50
I think it's a pretty even swap, all things considered. Not that it's going to happen. Can't happen. Surely. Right?
Nick

Max Fried, Ian Anderson and Kyle Muller for Cole Hamels
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
Giving up Anderson seems a bit steep for Hamels, given what he costs.

Dipoto is a genius! Are the M's for real and do they get anyone at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Yes and no. It's great they have won all these close games, but there's no reason to think that reflects anything unique about the M's. But they have those games in the W column now. And have some dollars to spend. They should absolutely push this summer.
3:53
Now, where? I think they focus on the staff and maybe look to get a lefty bat that can bolster the OF/1B mix down the stretch and platoon with Healy at first in the postseason (when Cano goes away).

As a Braves fan, I desperately want a great, LONG TERM, solution to 3B.  We have the prospects and we have the need.  What's it take to get Suarez from the Reds?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Have to think about this from the Reds' perspective. They have not gotten good results from many recent veteran trades ... but nailed the one that brought in Suarez! They signed him to an extension ... and he's playing even better! This guy is a big, big piece of the future vision. It would take an unreasonable haul.
3:55
I think Austin Riley is getting puffed up a bit as a prospect, just based upon what I've read and the K rate, but he's also still a consideration.

Giants going to be buyers or sellers?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
With little room to add money and a somewhat committed position, they are good candidates to hold.
Nate
3:57
Does Soto’s emergence mean the Nats are more likely to walk away from Harper at the end of the season?  Soto, Robles, Eaton and Taylor seems like it could be a playoff-caliber outfield without the $400 mil + contract
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
If they really view Harper as a generational talent, then they should still entertain it. But yes, it does change the picture quite a bit. When you think of the excess value Soto and Robles could provide, and what you could do with the reallocated funds that would have gone to Harper ...
Phillies
3:58
The Phillies production from their third basemen has been really bad. Who could they realistically get to help the rest of this season. I don't see Machado as a realistic option for a team that doesn't want to give up decent prospects.
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Fine, David Freese it is.
3:59
There are several third basemen that ought to be available, so a fair number of options. But let's see if the Phils are really still in it enough to go after rental assets.

What other large contract could the Mariners flip Cano for?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
It's an interesting idea, in theory, if there was a really good but also old and expensive player in a similar contract situation. But finding a close enough match that other pieces could balance it out ... that's tough. And then that team is taking on a guy who just got hit with a PED-related extension. So how much of a sweetener do they need to do it? (Lots.) Not really seeing it.
