Astros 2019 WS

It is hard to repeat....What reasonable moves outside of obtaining a closer or LOOGY can the Astros make to increase their chances of repeating?

Will the the Nats trade for Ramos
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
Definitely possible.

Can the Blue Jays get anything for Marco Estrada?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Cost savings, mostly, unless they try the ol' "pay it down to buy a prospect" move. But unlikely they will be able to pry a major talent loose.
Those with interest in Marco should read this: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/06/trade-candidate-marco-estrada.h...
(Those of you, that is. I'm not trying to claim teams should care what I say.)

Do you see the padres make a move for a third baseman or starting pitcher this offseason? Josh Donaldson or Keuchel?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
At this rate, Donaldson is going to be a really interesting guy next winter. I mean, he always was going to be. But we assumed he'd play well and be looked at as a high-end player. With this awful run of injuries, he's starting to look like one of those fascinating players who is considered by quite a few more teams, perhaps with creative contract options and such.
3:54
As for the Pads, sure, I can see them targeting either area, though certainly they could also bet on the young talent on the left side of the infield. They do have some more capacity for high-dollar players, though not many, and they need to be careful with two (Myers/Hoz) already on the books.

I've got no major prospects but money to spend. Who are my realistic deadline targets? Am I focused on the rotation only, or will I look into 1B, bullpen, something else?
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
Hamels is a guy that you look at and think, "he's pretty good but awfully expensive!" Maybe that's the kind of move they'll look at to maximize their assets. I do think it makes sense to get a bat; as I've suggested before, the optimal piece would be capable of playing first and the corner OF to allow them to maximize Cano (who will be important down the stretch but can't play in the postseason).
3:56
Maybe a potential suitor for a Corey Dickerson or Scott Schebler type of guy? Just spitballing.
3:57
Dietrich?
Parts + Gleyber

All moot now, maybe, but seems like there was never a moment of extension talk between O's and Manny. Is that right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Sounds like there were serious talks a few years ago. More recently? Not really. Just wasn't realistic this past winter.

Article the other day said that other gms said about the orioles that "they just don't get it". Are the Orioles just asking for too much and not settling for less?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Can't assess it since we don't know. Maybe they are shooting for the moon right now on Manny, but they should be at this point. He's a position player (less injury risk) and it's early.

Suppose the Yankees were willing to trade every prospect of note aside from Torres, Andujar and Frazier. Would that bring back a deGrom, Berrios, Bumgarner, Snell, etc?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
Without assuming those pitchers are really all in the same boat (I don't think they are), they certainly all "you have to pry him loose" types, so I'll address that generally. I do think the Yankees have the assets to force another team's hand, even without parting with that trio. I dont' think they will see Frazier as untouchable, though the other two probably won't be dealt.
Twins Guy
4:03
Twins are falling further behind all the time and look like they should be sellers. Who can they even move to get back a worthwhile haul?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Not there yet, but it is heading in that direction, isn't it? Eduardo Escobar is probably the chief asset at this point and he'd be an interesting piece given the lack of good outfielders clearly available right now. Otherwise, Rodney/Reed/Duke could be solid assets.
4:05
The veteran SPs could always turn in a few solid starts. Lynn has improved, at least.
Raylan Givens

Howdy Jeffrey. Who's your pick for AL East victor? I'd take Red Sox if they can stay healthy

Someone tweeted they "heard" Yankees offered Clint Frazier, Gary Sánchez and Justus Sheffield for deGrom, and that the Mets declined that offer. What say you to that?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Sounds implausible. The Yankees aren't parting with their starting/franchise catcher in the middle of a season.
(If this isn't on our site, it means we haven't found reason to believe it's a valid report, also. I haven't seen it specifically though.)
4:08
(People claim to "hear" things quite often.)

What can the O’s expect to get for Zach Britton at the deadline, following injury and some ineffective appearances?
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Not much at all, right now. It's going to take a lot to turn him into a really useful trade asset. But there's still a month to go.
4:09
Certainly, no real reason for the O's to do anything but sit back and hope he improves and the offers increase.

Where are Brian Wilson and Juan Uribe? Have they retired?
Jeffrey Todd

On a rocking chair on a front porch out in the country?
Don't recall specifically hearing on either player, but at some point you just kind of assume it's all over.

Braves have too many problems to correct without compromising future? Likely a wild card team at best?
Jeffrey Todd
4:11
Nats have some real problems, so I think the division is still open. I mean, I still think DC takes it, but the fact that ATL still has that to chase also ought to increase their willingness to pursue deals at the deadline.
4:12
I think they will mostly bet on internal options, but bolster the bullpen and also look for creative ways to get better. That might mean weighing major deals for controllable players or seeking solid value on a rental veteran who isn't some kind of star but will boost the overall quality of the mix.

Donaldson just a QO situation at this point for Toronto or do you think a team takes a chance and offers them prospect value > QO
