Do the O's move one, both or neither of Bundy/Gausman?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Guessing neither, though Bundy could be a guy that is pursued by teams that are willing to give up high-end young talent for a controllable SP. So maybe they'll at least have to think abou tit.

When will the trades start happening?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Well, they already have. Early July isn't usually a rapid-fire time, but things can always happen this time of year. This year, there's action already and several situations that I think could go off as soon as the right offer is made. Huge divides this year between sellers and contenders, and quite a few sellers (esp in AL) perhaps makes it somewhat more likely to see earlier movement.
Cubs
3:34
Wait for Drew Smyly to get back before making a move?!
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
His status matters, yes, in that maybe you don't feel as interested in back of the rotation types if he seems on track. That's more relevant with Darvish's issues and Alzolay being down for the year.
3:35
Don't see them as very likely to get a higher-end SP anyway, but I don't think Smyly would change the calculation much in that regard.

Can the Twins get anything at the deadline
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
Cost savings, mostly. But Escobar could draw a return, Rodney/Duke are useful, and maybe there's enough interest in Dozier for his track record to get some talent.
Giants
3:36
We absolutely shouldn't go over the tax line this year... right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
It's very hard to answer that from outside the org. We just don't know the full financial picture they are working with. But it doesn't seem like that massive a benefit if the team is really a plausible contender. They have Cueto returning and are closer to first than I expeccted.

How does Luhnow play this deadline...Deal for a BP arm, deal for a bat, or no deal at all?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
He probably has a list of a few guys he'd really actually want to add and will try for them. No need to deal just to deal, not even for like a solid reliever type. Catcher is the real "need" spot to me, at least for depth, for a club that really mostly has it all otherwise.

Greetings from Costa Rica?
What will these bravos end up doing?
I dont buy Machado. I do buy the bullpen need and maybe a SP.
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Agree on Machado, mostly, and think they will add relievers.
That said, ya gotta capitalize on this chance, right? If they are going to weigh giving up multiple quality SP prospects in the offseason, they should consider doing it now if it means adding a high-end SP.
3:41
And I know the focus has always been on whether they should upgrade at 3B. As in: "is player X better than Camargo?" That's not quite the way to look at it, in my view.
3:42
Swanson hasn't been hitting and could be bumped to a utility role. Or if you add a really good 3B you could bump Camargo and Swanson into timeshare roles. Regardless, you get a lot better.
Think it's at least worth entertaining and I expect they will.
Machado
3:43
All the rumors in the press so far have tended to be unspecific as to what orioles would be getting in return. Those rumors tend to lack substance, in my view. Do you have anything of substance to add?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Rumors are almost always vague until, sometimes, a deal is really close to happening. Even then, the return typically comes after the fact of the MLB player being dealt.
3:44
That said, I recommend you read closely a) how reporters phrase things and b) how we treat those things. When you read a lot of "likely" and "probably" and the like, it may reflect some gleanings of info the reporter got, but also means there's nothing firm enough to say otherwise.
And we really look closely at reports before deciding when and how to utilize them on our site.

3:46
The Nats are only really losing Bryce (1.3 fWAR, so far), and Gio Gonzalez. How much further do they have to drop to sell off the free agents and regroup for next year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
Um, yeah, I forgot to mention Gio above.
3:47
I think they'd basically have to be something like 10 or more out at the deadline. Just so hard for me to imagine a trade of Harper.
Corey
3:47
What would Jose Martinez fetch in a trade?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
Well, we all know how defensively limited sluggers have fared. Now, he's been a very good one. But the whole story behind him as a possible trade candidate involves the idea that he really can't play first base well enough. In that case, he's an AL only guy. There are like 8, max, competitive AL teams at the moment and not many look like great first.
Offseason situation could look different, I guess, but I don't get the suggestions I've seen that they Cards could just count on getting a big return for him.
Dwight
3:50
Ian Anderson and Max Fried for Machado? What is your take?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Honestly, my take upon seeing that was ... where did this concept even come from? So the Braves likely deal that specific package? Okay, well ... a) not surprising; b) that doesn't tell us much.
Rockies
3:51
Seems like the Rockies are set up to make no moves at the deadline. What do you think?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Yeah another potential "hold" team, maybe a light bullpen buy or something. So adding them up ... I've got Giants, Rox, Cards, A's, and then maybe the Nats. I see more chance of the Nats buying hard than the others, though frankly there's enough time left (over 3 weeks) for the situation to look different for any of these clubs.
That's why most deadline deals wait until close to the day itself.
Dick Williams
3:54
Does rusney Castillo and cash for homer Bailey make any sense?
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
Not for Red Sox. Unfortunately for Rusney, adding him back to a 40-man would mean putting his money back into lux tax calcs. (Loophole that allows that has since been closed.)
Craig Biggio
3:55
Would it make more sense for the Astros to go after Wilson Ramos than JTR since they seem reluctant to part with high end talent such as Whitley and Tucker. What package would it take for Ramos?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Certainly plausible. Ramos is also enough of a hitter to be a bench weapon. He'll be available to whatever team offers the deal the Rays like best. Taking on the $ will probably be part of it. Otherwise hard to guess at specifics, but I am sure the 'Stros have pieces to do it comfortably.
