Don't see why it'd really be a trend. Most big market teams are on the upswing, which perhaps has more mid-level teams seeing this as an opportune time to reload. Once that starts to swing back (eg Red Sox roster gets really expensive) then maybe there'll be broader competition.

Of course, the whole idea that teams are now more willing to be an extreme loser for a stretch ... that's also a factor, potentially. There could be a trend of just more bad teams year to year, I guess. Then again, it's not like you can't get into the postseason as a mediocre club. Plenty will (look at the NLEast)
