Let me give you just one possible explanation that seems pretty straightforward to me: Hanley only wanted to play if he was going to get a reasonably significant role on a team that he wanted to play for. Such an offer hasn't materialized, so he's content sitting for the time being.

Not sure if that's the case, but he might just not have been interested in taking what was on offer at this stage of his career. And given his limits (and reputation, too), there may not have been lots of great opportunities.

Still not clear, but that's also b/c of demand. Doubt the Reds are just holding out for a crazy big return. They have been pretty clear they got him with a flip in mind. It may not turn out to be much, but so long as some contender wants him, I think he goes.

It is stupid to let each umpire to have there own stile zone. A high strike is a strike and a low strike is a strike. It should not be left up to interpretation.

Diminished Kershaw is still amazing, as it turns out. How about an extension with Dodgers before he officially becomes a free agent? Seems possible. It is so hard to guess at numbers for me, because it presents so many questions about valuation. There's the business side for an all-time player. Age/velo. Opt-outs could definitely play in.
So ... I guess I'm not willing to go on record yet with a value. But I do think he's got to opt out now. He'd clearly draw huge interest on the open market despite the areas of concern.
