Well, it isn't as if the money is magically going away when it was there before. They have known that they would not be paying him (at least, not nearly as much) anymore. Obviously they decided not to tie up much or any of that previously. Also probably won't have to spend as much in arb as they thought. On the other hand, they have loads of holes to fill and surely wont' be anxious to tie up future payroll too much.

So ... I don't know. Certainly could end up with a rather low payroll next year, or perhaps spend some of it on more short-term guys that fall through the cracks.

Arguably will not be worth his salary (which will be like 7.5 or 8 mil). But he's certainly a MLB player and can work on the roster with a platoon partner.

Even if he finishes the season looking like the Murphy of recent memory at the plate, age/injury/glove will limit him to two years I'd expect. But if he looks like a premium bat that can still line up, at least sometimes, at second ... could be for a double-digit-million annual rate.

I mean ... there is increasingly a sort of a segment of fandom that seems to be so caught up in prospects that they lose sight of the fact that so many of them fail. And, more importantly, that their future value is always being reevaluated. That's particularly relevant for some of the guys that were listed in this particular scenario.
