It will be in Monopoly money, so I'm not sure it's worth the postage.
Dylan

It’s not like the Astros were screwed by the Singleton deal
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Not saying they were. It was only a $10MM gamble.
Jeff
3:39
Would the Scott Kingery extension count as a "pre-promotion," as it was completed to avoid being sent to the minors for 2 weeks for service time considerations?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
OH right
Yes, that counts. I stink. That one was 24 mil I think. So ... raises the bar, for sure.

What should Giants do with McCutchen? Get whatever they can now? Issue a QO in the offseason? Attempt to resign him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Get what they can now or thank him for his service on his way onto the open market.

Sterns has been great in the opinion of Brewers fans, but if we miss the playoffs should he own up to the criticism that he couldn’t find a deal to enhance our starting pitching?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Bit hard to be too critical when the track record, generally, has been excellent overall and in fact the rotation has been solid enough. But ... sure, he should face at least some amount of criticism if that turns out to be a big deficiency that the team can't overcome. You can do that without taking away from the overall promise he/the team have shown.

Hello Jeff will the Astros get another bat before August is over and if so who do you think ? Thx
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
I think that makes a lot of sense. Who ... that's harder, though they have some flexibility in terms of where they can put a bat (OF/1B/DH) and that keeps a lot of options open. Wonder if they could work out the dollars to bring in Choo? Justin Smoak could make sense. Morales if they like him (Jays will pay that down). There are others, too ...
3:47
I'm thinking lefty bats, clearly.
Daniel
3:48
Any advantage in trading a player at the waiver deadline compared to the regular trade deadline
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
I suppose there are some ways in which it can work out that way. Certainly, the Jays have more likelihood of getting something out of Donaldson now than they did on 7/31, just b/c of his particular situation. But there's still uncertainty/risk there and it is just generally more complicated. Generally, the traditional trade deadline still has plenty of meaning.
Qualifying Offer
3:49
Won’t Nick Markakis (aka Kakes) get a qualifying offer from the Braves? Think he will take it? Can’t imagine many teams wanting to lose a draft pick for the 35 yr old outfielder but maybe so? What pick does a team lose now?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Oof I don't know. I mean, if you think he's going to match this season, then heck yeah it's worth it. But I sorta doubt the Braves expect that and I don't think they'll want to risk him taking the deal (which I think he'd have to). If they really want him back, probably better to try to get him on a two-year deal in FA.

Jeff, I get your concerns with the Reds getting competitive.  1) if you had three moves and $15M of new money to spend, what moves would you make?  2) Once you've made those moves, what does your starting five look like?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
You mean I have $15MM to spend in FA? In 2019 salary? I assume we'll be looking to limit the future outlay in doing this. That leaves you free to sign one still-good quite old dude (remember the A.J. Burnett deal, for instance) or two reasonably promising bounceback types (Ross/Rangers deal, Masterson/Red Sox, etc), or three innings eaters.
If you're able to spend future money, there's quite a bit more flexibility.
3:54
Anyway, that's just a brief look at the general price ranges ... can't really do the full analysis here. But I think that's something we'll cover when we do the team's offseason outlook.
Ryan

"But will either team be willing to take on the $?"
At this point you're talking ~$5.4m with no financial obligations beyond the current season. Hardly breaking the bank and easily worth Harper's upside down the stretch and in the playoffs.
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
But the Giants would go over the luxury line (they won't do that) unless they move salary elsewhere. And the Pirates are certainly not going to be shrugging their shoulders at that kind of money when they know they are highly unlikely to reach the postseason, even with Harper.
Rocco Rox
3:57
Do you agree DJ, Cargo & Parra are all gone from the Rox?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
I wouldn't rule out a reunion with CarGo. You wonder if both sides just like each other more than anybody else does. I expect the others will depart.
Brandon
3:58
Why do most media think the Nats window is shut with Harper leaving? Soto, Turner, Robles, Kieboom, Rendon, Stras, and soon to be 3 in a row CY Young winner Mighty Max. Don't get it.
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
They have work to do, but the window is still open for sure. That was true even before Soto established himself as one of the game's single most valuable assets.

Your velocity is down in this chat... I can tell you're lagging today.  Your Toddball just doesn't have the same "zip".  I know you chatted yesterday, so we're going to get the bullpen active a little earlier than usual tonight.
Jeffrey Todd

Between you and me I am sagging.
It's 4
I know we started late, but ...

I mean, old school chatters would always go over an hour. But if the pen is ready ...
Okay fine I got 15 more minutes in me let's do this. Even if my arm falls off.

hitters get beamed sometimes it happens.i dont know why people get so upset about it?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
Please. We all know the difference. An upper nineties heater in the mid-body/hands can put a guy out for two months easily. It's unacceptable.

If Bryant, Morrow, Darvish all return in time for the playoffs, does David Bote make the playoff roster?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
If The Bote keeps performing at anything like his current level, the Cubs will make room on the roster.
It's me again. Again.
4:03
Hey, its me, the .500 Giants. Again. Again. Seriously though, again?
Jeffrey Todd

This was the likeliest outcome entering the season, so .....
