Thankfully we don't need to answer this b/c Billy Eppler said last night they are not trading him.

How can the Reds keep running Homer Bailey out there?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Well, why stop now? They have had a historically awful pitching staff over the last few seasons.
3:31
They are going to pay him regardless, so they can just get the innings and hope he finds something. If he could tamp down on the dingers a bit, it wouldn't be so awful.

The Blue Jays have a LOT of middle infielders in the upper minors and their MLB roster (Tulo, Travis, Diaz, Solarte, Bichette, Urena, Gurriell Jr, etc).  Who do you see them trading in the offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
So many options, so few answers.
3:33
I mean, we know the long-term hope here. But for now, I expect they'll be trotting out veterans in hopes that one or more show enough to turn into trade bait.
3:34
They are sort of stuck in the middle there. They'll also need someone to play third base for at least a while while they let Guerrero work on his defense again at Triple-A : )

You think Machado will get a 10 year deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
If he wants one, yeah, he can get it. All bets are off on Manny after this season.

Tell me how the nl east division race isnt a contest to see who gets eliminated in the first round.
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
If you mean "baseball realism" seriously, then you'll understand why that isn't necessarily the case. I don't think the Braves or Phillies are going to enter the postseason as favs, but that hardly means they can't advance.
Hell the Royals made it to the WS 2x in a row and even won it once!
3:37
(Sorry KC fans, I can't help but tweak. You deserve your crown. I prefer to celebrate underdogs who overcome the odds to win, as we would in an NCAA hoops context, rather than pretend that the best team in a given season is determined by the playoffs.)

Gun to your head - is Kershaw a Dodger next season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Yes.
Now please put that thing away.

How in the bloody h--- did the Angels get Ohtani so cheap???  5 years of control yet?   At close to minimum?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Because of the international spending rules. He didn't have the age and int'l professional experience required not to be bound by the bonus pool limitations.
I have to go on a quick tangent on Ohtani, btw.
First off, I've seen people calling him a bust b/c of the TJ news.
WHAT
3:40
He has been absolutely amazing. He's one of the best young pitchers and hitters in the game ... c'mon.
3:41
Secondly, why is this dude getting anything other than complete love from every baseball fan? He pushed to come back and play through his injury issues. He has played both ways ... even dingered 2x on the same day he learned he'd almost certainly need TJ. The guy is everything you could ever hope or ask for from a baseball player.

If we're being completely honest, the crop of free agent outfielders besides Harper & Pollock is thin. Granted the "bounceback" season that Jason Heyward is having, do you see a scenario where he opts out and tries for a bigger deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
No, I do not think that will happen.
3:43
I do agree that it is a pretty thin market, though. Some older veterans who will still look like solid bets on short-term deals, but there's a big drop-off after those two.

Will we have a better chance signing free agents this winter, giving the latests upswing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
A's have signed plenty of FAs over the years. I'm not sure they have to pay a huge premium or anything, though I guess the shoddy ballpark conditions may have played a role at times.
3:46
Issue is they have never thrown a huge amt of money at top guys. Not sure why that'd necessarily change, though they certainly have plenty of open payroll space.
MLB
3:46
Why would anyone invest 1/5 of their payroll in a single player? Would it be really worth paying a player $40 million anually (Machado) when you have $196 as your payroll?!

Generally, it could be worth it for a player young enough to project as a 4-5 WAR type of guy for some time to come, and we have seen teams committing low-30s to guys already. Importantly, too, these clubs considering such deals will be anticipating that their future payrolls will be higher than they are now.

What would a Mookie extension have to look like? 300mil, 10 years?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
He's a good enough player that the value comes from his and the team's tolerance more than anything else. He has said very clearly he wants to go year to year. So to overcome that sentiment, they'd presumably have to come with a big, big offer.
3:50
In terms of pure comps, though, Mookie will be 4+ -- same as Stanton was -- and he seems like he would warrant an even bigger contract.

Opinion on Phillies moving Hoskins to first base and making serious bid for Bryce Harper.
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
They'd have to dump Santana. On the one hand, who cares? You're getting Harper and investing a huge amount of money. On the other ... you can't just go flushing $20MM annual salaries, can you? I'd think Manny is a more sensible target.

Worse contract right now Davis Baltimore or Miggy Detroit?
