Does it make sense to you that the Nats use Harper money (they aren't going to sign him anyway) to sign LaMahieu, Wilson Ramos as free agents and still have enough for a decent arm, i.e. back of rotation starter or late inning reliever?

(I'm not ready to fully assess the Nats' coming offseason, but yes, there's certainly an arg for spreading resources rather than chasing Harper.)

I see Harper at around 7/210 with a couple of opt outs. I think the questions about clubhouse chemistry and his subpar batting averages in 2016 & 2018 will hold his market down. What say you?

I think he gets more. Boras magic is also a factor, as is marketing. Harper is probably the most recognizable player in the game.

I was thinking about this the other day. Votto does all sorts of hilarious things to interact with fans. Others do, too. It's the only sport where players can legitimately do that throughout a game without distracting from their on-field effort. And it's all the more possible -- even necessary -- given the 162-game schedule.

So .. more of that, please. Not sure if there's a way to get creative with facilitating/highlighting that aspect of the game, but if so, it'd be worth exploring.

Don't get the Harper love.  Never drove in 100 runs, won a GG, or advanced past the first playoff run.  Good but not special defensively.  Yet he gets lumped in with Trout constantly, when there's no comparison.

There is absolutely no comparison with Trout, at this point. I agree with that. They were compared when they were younger b/c both were seen as huge rising stars.

Otherwise, all the things you cite aren't things that teams actually consider in assessing players.
I mean, his general defensive ability, yes. but the RBI/GG/postseason.

Anyway, there are legit questions as to whether Harper is worth some kind of unprecedented contract, those just aren't really the reasons for the skepticism.
