Padres Chairman says they won't pursue Harper or Machado but will go after an ace via trade. Who makes sense for them?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
It's rarely going to be easy to pry loose an ace, but who's that going to be right now? deGrom? I mean, maybe, but holy smokes get out your pocketbook. Maybe Syndergaard or Wheeler would be what he's after? This all depends on the Mets' course, which we don't yet know.
Really aren't many candidates to move who'd be considered an ace in any sense of the term. Unless they want to do something wild involving pitchers in the division (Greinke, MadBum).

Ohtani over Andujar is ridiculous. Ohtani doesn't even play the field (a big negative) and even worse it forces other bad defenders to play the field in his place. Plus his counting stats are not comparable to Andujar.
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
LOL come on man. You really think it's "ridiculous" to prefer Ohtani?
3:27
Whichever guy you like, you can't possibly tell me it's ridiculous to think a 22-homer, 150-ish wRC+ season plus 10 elite starts isn't competitive for ROY. Esp when the opposition you prefer was a good-not-great hitter who isn't much loved for his glovework.

What do you think the removal of Evans means in regards to the Giant's direction. Thanks Jeff!
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Hard to say in some respects. They might still hire someone with orders to follow the same general trajectory, just to do a better job of it, if that makes sense. (I.e., continue spending and maintain competitiveness while also building up for the future.) Perhaps, though, they are open to hearing ideas on the best course from candidates. I still doubt it'll be a full-blown teardown at this point.

Look into your crystal ball.  What will the Reds do to improve their on field product?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
Could imagine them pursuing a relatively young, health-risky type of pitcher in the mold of Mike Minor last winter. Someone who'll cost but not a ton and not on a hugely lengthy deal. Eovaldi? Could imagine Holland, Cahill ...
3:33
There are quite a few bounceback type pitchers out there as well, and they'll be well positioned to add some on relatively affordable deals. Estrada, for example.  Can take a risk on Pomeranz, say. Lots of options, but I expect the focus will be on SP and value.

Was Bryce Harper really asking for a $540 million deal, as is being floated about on social media?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
I don't know but my guess as to his asking price is not impacted by what's being floated on social media. Every now and again things are truly whispered around that have some semblance of truth, but it's quite often gibberish.

Is it time for the DBacks to trade Goldy and begin a rebuild?
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
That's awfully tough to do, isn't it? After two competitive seasons. They are also trying to get a new ballpark. Would be worth trying to extend him. Trying to move as much of the Greinke contract as possible might be sensible -- that is just going to make it so hard for this team to operate moving forward, even if he continues to age well.

Quit my job as an attorney after practicing for a year. Hated it. Not sure what to do now. Any advice? Nothing lined up but could not continue
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
If you can find something in the legal field that might hold some appeal, say in a subject matter you care about, even if it's volunteer/low paid/etc, then do that. If you have some financial flexibility, take advantage of it and pursue something you care about.
3:38
Just ... don't sit on the sidelines and let your resume get stale. And if you don't have to settle for something that pays to a certain level, don't. Go to another part of the world. Find an organization to work with. Etc.
3:39
(Of course, I'd also advise knocking out student loans asap, so ... could be tough!)
NYY rotation
3:40
Do you think Lynn/Happ are more than rentals - will resign for a reasonable enough contract that the yankees will hold on to them in 2019? Other potential rotation pieces for 19?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
The fact that the Yankees acquired them indicates they like them to some extent, and now have seen them in action. Otherwise, they were just acquired as rentals so they'll be considered like any other pitcher.
3:41
And holding onto them will mean spending, particularly for Happ. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/09/an-early-look-at-j-a-happs-next...

If the Dodgers don't make the playoffs, are the drastic changes afoot?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
I think they will continue to trust the process. Would be disappointing, of course, but I doubt their opinion will change that much based upon how things shake out over the next 4 games, even if that means being on the outside looking in.

FWIW Aaron Nola has an identical bWAR to deGrom
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
And like 3 less fWAR. I don't know that we should be looking to those particular tabulations for this award.
Todd the Wet Sprocket
3:45
Nola should be top 3 for the cy young right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
I think I would add Corbin to the lead pack, though his ERA isn't quite as impressive so I'd be okay with putting him just off the medal stand. So, sure, yes. Incredibly impressive season for Nola, obviously, since it's even worth discussing him alongside Scherzer and deGrom.

3:48
Has Matt Holliday done enough to get an MLB deal for 2019?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
Yes, as an AL DH/bench bat at least, but you honestly wonder if he wants to or even really sought that last winter. Perhaps he was content hanging back for much of the season and would want to do so again? Maybe he enjoys this last hurrah and hangs em up? I don't know.
Todd the Wet Sprocket
3:49
6/150 for Corbin to NY?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
He has had an awesome year but that still feels a bit hefty to me. Then again, we've seen bidding create true surprises before (Shin-Soo Choo, for instance).
Tony
3:50
If Harper comes back, the nats have 4, arguably 5 starting caliber outfielders in Harper, Soto, Robles, Eaton (and arguably Taylor). How do you see the nationals handling the situation?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Unless they take the position that Eaton needs some rest, Harper or Soto can DH for interleague or perhaps even play some 1B, etc ... I think they'd have to trade Robles (leaving no clear CF) or Eaton (at a discounted rate). It really isn't a clean situation for a return.

I'm predicting that the Jays re-sign Marco Estrada to a 1-year $5M contract. Am I crazy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Would not shock me particularly.
You are sane.

3:53
Disagree about the 1 game WC. The entire game, both post, and regular season, is based on the series concept, because, baseball being baseball, the worst team can beat the best team in a single game. And, MLB needs to go back to the 154 game regular season.
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Well, I agree with that concept, but that's also why I tend to be more impressed personally with teams that dominate the regular season than those that win the postseason. There's a reason that baseball uses such a secondary term to describe it -- post-season. It all started as something of an exhibition, after all. I don't love the WS getting singular attention, though I admit it is incredibly exciting to watch ... as are one-game playoffs!
Baseball's LeBron?
3:55
If Mike Trout was a free agent this offseason, do you think he would be worth $50 million per year on a 10-year contract ($500 million)? He's arguably the greatest player of all-time, but he doesn't have that willingness or ability to help promote MLB like LeBron James does with the NBA, so maybe that would knock his price down a little bit.  What say you?
