I do think he would command that. He's still very young. And nobody has come close to his production on a consistent basis.
3:57
As for marketing ... maybe he'd stand out more naturally if he signed such a deal. I don't know. But it seems MLB has made some effort of late to get him marketed for the right reasons -- namely, he's sort of exactly the kind of ballplayer most people would say they want their kid to look up to, etc. He does lots of good stuff, supposedly, that just isn't publicized. Anyway ... lots of ways to get your money worth for that investment.

Why would any of you quit as an attorney, just because of the money alone? When the stock market crashes and we're in another Great Depression, you'll wish you were pulling down those six digits per year.  Make all you can as long as you can!

Well, if things turn south that significantly, your 401k will go up in smoke and you might lose your job. Better to have already shed those golden handcuffs and learned to live simply!

Do I get traded or come off the bench for the Nationals next year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Wait and see. (See above re Harper.) He's a very sensible 4th OF but they won't hesitate to move him if the circumstances warrant.
Rays

What do we need to be a condentendor I was thinking a starter and maybe a reliever or two
Jeffrey Todd

Is there even a distinction? You want pitchers, yes?
Ha. Just messing around.
4:00
But hey, the Rays do seem like a good candidate to splash some cash and why not get some more hybrid type arms? They probably don't have all that many roster spots to fill, so maybe they will target some particular guys -- perhaps even make some multi-year commitments?
4:01
Okay going to try to grab a couple more and then I do have to run ...

I was thinking Evoladi for Cincinnati too. Do you see them going after a guy like Stroman who they can sign to 5 year extension that would be more feasible than Corbin or Keuchel?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
I could see them liking that idea - tho probably not an extension unless it was super cheap - but Jays won't just give him away.

Do you think the Phillies' disastrous finish will make it tougher for them to sign a Machado/Harper?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
They got two veterans to join up last year. I think they'll be okay in the recruiting department.

Who does the Qualifying Offer benefit? It seems that it makes no one happy.

It is beginning to take on the character of a rule that has been tweaked around a lot, so much so that you wonder why it exists anymore.
I examined it all a few years back in a series of posts that you might find informative.
4:04
Never did go back and finish that off, but ...

Craig Kimbrel back to the Braves? 5/100M?

Feels a bit steep for ATL. Not sure I see it. I think they will be looking for better value.

Donaldson's next contract 3/80

Feels high unless he goes wild in the postseason.
But you never know ... as I said, teams will have a viewpoint on this based on scouting looks. And obviously the ceiling is huge.
4:07
Okay folks I really do need to get a move on! Much to take care of this evening. Thank you! Enjoy the end of the regular season.
One programming note: I will be out of town next week, thus no chat. So ... we'll do this again in the midst of the postseason.
