This ... is ... not the boldest take I've seen, haha.

Why would Kris Bryant slap the city of Chicago in the face like that?

huh?

I'm exhausted.  I don't want to work today.  Give me some good Giants news to get me through the next 4 hours.

Well let's see here ...
Ken Rosenthal  @Ken_Rosenthal
#SFGiants asked to speak to #Brewers GM David Stearns about becoming their president of baseball operations, but Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio denied permission, sources tell The Athletic. Stearns has at least one year left on his deal, sources say.

(That's not surprising to hear. Stearns is in line for a big new contract, have to think.)

Do you see Machado playing SS again in 2019? I'd argue that whichever team signs him (Phillies, Yankees, Cardinals, Cubs) will move him back to 3B
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
It'll probably depend upon the extent to which he's willing to insist upon it in contract talks. Because I think he'll earn more if he says "I'll be happy to play wherever you want me to."
That's not just due to perceptions of attitude, or some such ... I think he'll be seen as more valuable as a third baseman.

3:36
Who says no to a Troy Tulowitzki-Dexter Fowler swap? Both players have full NTC's so it could be any of the four parties involved. Tulo has 2 to 3 years left with a total of $38M to $49M, Fowler has 3 years with $49.5M left.
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Fowler has more value. He isn't far from a highly productive season and was clearly unlucky (at least to some extent) in 2018. Tulo had been a shell of his former self ... and who knows if he'll ever be able to play again.
Fowler is another interesting bad contract type, as referenced above. Can still imagine him in STL but I think some other teams would like to take a shot on him.

Really? The Shields trade was worse than the Dansby Swanson fiasco?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Yeah I think so. At least Miller was a legitimately valuable guy at that time. The Sox took on significant money and gave up a player who's now arguably the best prospect in baseball. That really hurts.
3:39
Now, both deals seemed odd at the time. But in the case of Shields, I had no reason to think Tatis was particularly undervalued. Arguably, the White Sox should have known better, but there's also some hindsight in this.

A dude in the @mlbtraderumors chat just said that the Braves should trade Touki, Fried and Jefrey Ramos to the Rangers for Mazara

Yeah beyond the other stuff I said above, I agree that'd be awfully steep.

now
Brewers throw another curveball: Gio Gonzalez and Wade Miley scheduled to start Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS.
Both of these series are going to be fun as hell to watch.

How appealing would ace 35 y/o Zack Greinke (3 years left) be to an ATL team in need of an ace, with a little money to spend? ARZ could eat more depending on the prospect(s) back in relief (to extend Goldy?), would also buy ATL some time for their studs to flourish.
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
The Greinke contract is yet another fascinating one. Frankly, I think he'd earn nearly that much (3/95.5) if he was a free agent this winter. He's still an excellent pitcher. That's good for Arizona, obviously.
3:45
Just how the D-Backs will try to offload it remains to be seen. I assume they'll be open to just about anything. I still think it's a bit steep to take on the whole deal and give up young talent, but of course some teams will look at this market and think they'd rather pay a little extra for Greinke than perhaps overpay one of the other SPs.

3:46
Do you think opt out clauses in contracts benefit both the team and the player? Or just the player?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
There's just no argument that they benefit teams, at the point they are agreed to. It's possible that in some narrow circumstances, a player may opt out of a deal in a situation where the team a) is relieved not to have to pay it and b) would not have been able to get any value from the contract via trade.
But even in such limited cases, we're talking about just one scenario among all the foreseeable outcomes. In the vast majority of the possible outcomes, you're looking at either continuing to pay a deal that no longer looks very good or bidding adieu to a player you wish you could keep at the remaining rate.

How surprising was Mikolas this year?  Was he the best "bang for your buck" contract last off season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Haven't examined that in detail (though it sounds like a good idea for a post), but yeah, it'd be tough to beat that goldmine of a contract.

What kid of a deal would it take to extend Khris Davis?  Seems like the $18.1M he is projected to get in arb is way higher than what he would get on the open market. But such is life in arb...
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
And his reps know that, too, so I don't know that the arb situation has to be a major impediment. I find it hard to price him out given the market changes we've experienced. We have still seen plenty of slugger types get over $10MM for one season commitments, and Davis is relatively young. The A's also did give Billy Butler 3/30 in FA. Would seem Davis should be able to beat that on a three-year commitment, even in an extension scenario.

What do the Red Sox do with Pedroia if his knee doesn't respond?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
I'm not exactly sure of the timeline, w/r/t when they'll get a good sense of his progress. But even if signs are positive, they'll have to consider a backup plan. Seems they'll have Nunez (player option) and Holt around, among other gap fillers, but the division is going to be competitive so it's not like they can just coast and wait for the trade deadline.
3:57
As noted above, lots of 2B options. So maybe they wait and watch Pedroia and see how the market develops, then jump when they have the right info/opportunity.
