Not sure there's much more to say about his situation right now. We've talked about it already. And will continue to do so. But no recent market developments.

Christin Stewart and Jordan Zimmermann both underwent core muscle repair surgery today in Philadelphia, performed by Dr. William Meyers. According to Dr. Meyers, both surgeries were successful and both players are expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Heard a sports analyst talking about positionless baseball - possibly introduced by the Rays in 2019 or 2020.  What do you think of the concept of multiple players moving around the field changing positions, batter by batter?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
Well, we only have positions in the first place b/c people sort of observed where balls tended to go and how the bases needed to be covered, right?
4:01
So I have no problem with any kind of shifting in theory. Onus is on hitters to counter.
That said, the league should examine and consider the issue insofar as it has an interest in ensuring there's enough offense and that the game is sufficiently exciting.

I think the Braves have a bigger need than Manny and that's the OF that's why Harper makes more sense.
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
That may be, but it's not like they just get to pick which guy they want. Plenty of other teams will be bidding.
4:03
Braves' corporate ownership is hard to guess at, right? In theory, it is emotion-less and only cares about the bottom line. Seems likely to me that agents will be able to convince another owner, of a deeper-pocketed team, to pay more for those players.

Do you think the Mets have a shot at Goldschmidt?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
I'd be pretty stunned if they did what it took to get him with one year left on his contract and Alonso waiting in the wings. Goldy will be interesting to watch. As I noted in the recent 1B market snapshot article, there aren't many teams with clear openings at first. But Goldy is worth making space for.

Do you think the Diamondbacks do in fact have a "fire sale" of sorts and deal Greinke, Goldy and company?
If so, where could you see them landing?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Yeah, I think so. Maybe not a full teardown but a shift in assets. A lot of factors lining up here. They would really have to extend payroll to make the roster competitive. Meanwhile, they are in a good place to cash in on some players. Why roll the dice that Greinke runs into problems? Or miss out on getting something for Goldy (at least, if you put out extension feelers and don't get a sense that there's a bargain to be had)?
4:08
Doesn't mean they need to dump every player with value, and it's always tough to give up when you have many of the pieces in place, but they could stay decent in the near-term and set themselves up well for the future with some well-conceived deals.

Another chat with tons of Angels questions, thanks.
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
First time I've seen them mentioned without it being a Trout trade question.
4:13
I don't really try to touch all the bases in these things ... I jump on stuff that is interesting to discuss b/c of recent developments or where I have a relatively strong opinion.
4:14
Halos ... I think we all know the situation, right? They have major pitching questions, a tough roster situation with Pujols, and an increasingly interesting farm/some payroll to deal with those and other needs.

Any chance Cards keep Carlos Martinez in the closer role?
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
Not unless they have good reason to believe he can't go back to being a really good starter.

Cozart for Santana make sense generally speaking for the Phillies and Angels? Other moving parts will be a factor of course.
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
I think the Halos have a greater need for Cozart with Pujols and Ohtani already accounting for DH and plenty of reasonable bench bats available on the market.

I think there should be a team opt-out as well.  For instance, a player signs a huge contract with an opt out after 3 years, but a team has an opt out after 5.  So in the 5th year, if you are declining, the team can terminate the rest of your contract, or opt-out as it were, and not be stuck with an albatross.
Jeffrey Todd
4:17
Generally, this would simply be a team option. We are seeing increasingly convoluted back and forth scenarios contemplated in contracts -- see, eg, the Arrieta deal -- and I expect that we'll get more and more varied situations.

How much does Moustakas get without QO and where does he go?
Jeffrey Todd

Like ... 3/30-something?

Which high-impact free agent do I have a legitimate chance of signing?
Jeffrey Todd
4:21
Real question is which do they have interest in signing. I'm not sure. They seem well set-up to pay someone a hefty bit on a shorter-term deal.
Fascinating winter coming for TBR.
Going to get a few more and then I have to bolt ...
Where art thou
4:22
Where does Jose Martinez go this year?  Over/under 75% chance he's traded?
Jeffrey Todd
4:23
Have to think he's dealt to the AL, since they didn't even really feel comfortable putting him at 1B.
Of course the AL is in a weird spot right now with so few competitive teams, so it's not a great time to move him.
Kevin
4:23
Do you see the white sox signing any big name free agents? They have the availability on the payroll to make a big splash!
Jeffrey Todd
4:24
And/or absorb big contracts to grab talent.
